I'm totally ignoring the comic strip's implication that a coin in, say, the reign of Julius Caesar's would have like 45 B. C. actually struck on it.

I suspect that the source of this week's "hilarity" was Batiuk not being allowed to dump off a bunch of loose change at a bank because it was unrolled (shock of shocks, banks are incredibly careful about the exact amounts their tellers are handling and consequently will usually only accept rolled coins), then using a CoinStar or off-brand equivalent and getting mad when he selected cash, rather than a gift card, and was charged a nominal convenience fee.

This almost reads like an adverstisement for CoinStar. Like now some young person or other will come in waving a stack of cash and say, "Hey, I just emptied a whole jar of pennies into a CoinStar machine and I got so much money and it was SO EASY!" This whole week has been like the comic strip equivalent of As Seen On TV World

I think a long plane ride is a pretty good premise for a week of comic strips. You could come up with some good gags. But this "I had no idea the trip to Hong Kong is long" is not one of them.

This is a little off topic but last time I went to a Coinstar to see what they offered to exchange coins for cash, the fee was 11%, which I don't consider "nominal." I think it's excessive.

I'm hoping it's just a case of a lowly comics creator taking a chance to jerk off to the idea of a lowly comics creator being buried under an avalanche of money and once he gets it out of his system things will get better.

I'm not saying that's what I believe will happen. Just hoping.

No, they don't. Most banks have coin sorting machines on hand for situations exactly like that. If you come in with a bunch of neatly rolled quarters then it all means is that you stuck a bunch of either slugs or lesser valued foreign currency in them. They'll have to waste time opening them up before dumping them in the machine, and nobody wants that.

e: unless we're talking about some run-down branch on nowhere street, then they MIGHT not have one. That'd be the exception, though.

Do US banks not have coin bags? Do they not trust people to count, or do they think someone will work out the perfect alloy to make it weight the right amount without being worth more?

Never heard of those before today, but what do you expect will happen when somebody tries to deposit one and the weight is off? The teller's not going to stand there and count it up by hand, they'll just dump it into a sorting machine and see what's what. It's not like they're particularly expensive. I'm with Batuik on this one, if some old guy comes in with a sock full of a few hundred pennies then any branch worth their salt should be able to accommodate him.
