NPR is no perfect media institution but I can't think of a national news organization doing daily news I would call clearly superior. Sure there are specific institutions that do better work (e.g. pro publica) but I honestly can't think of any that do the daily beat.

WoodrowSkillson posted:It's true though, its just that we are so insanely racist that these poorly trained, out of control cops are executing black men even more than anyone else. Not denying that. Racism is the reason that the victims are disproportionately black (well, some credit goes to the connection between race and poverty, but that in itself is because of racism) But it shouldn't be happening at all. I don't think there's a way to get rid of racism through policy, so maybe we can try to switch to de-escalation based policing instead of officer-safety-first?

This sounds good until you realize that it was passed to stop the Union Army from enforcing reconstruction in the south. Once Federal troops were removed Jim Crow really went into full swing. This is interesting, thanks. Even though we really should have done more for Reconstruction, I ultimately feel the Posse Comitatus Act was the right choice.

The fun thing to me is the ratio - a police interaction in 2014 had a fatality rate of slightly under 1 in a million. Yet the narrative is "they put their lives on the line every day". Truck drivers are 3 times as likely to be killed on the job as a uniformed officer.
