Naah, outside of a few shows NPR is pretty bad. Their news output is particularly awful.

By what metric?

NPR is no perfect media institution but I can't think of a national news organization doing daily news I would call clearly superior.

Sure there are specific institutions that do better work (e.g. pro publica) but I honestly can't think of any that do the daily beat.

It's true though, its just that we are so insanely racist that these poorly trained, out of control cops are executing black men even more than anyone else.

Not denying that. Racism is the reason that the victims are disproportionately black (well, some credit goes to the connection between race and poverty, but that in itself is because of racism)

But it shouldn't be happening at all. I don't think there's a way to get rid of racism through policy, so maybe we can try to switch to de-escalation based policing instead of officer-safety-first?

Yeah, that's known. There are also several pictures of him in his military uniform. The media has chosen to post pictures of him in a dashiki for some reason. We'll never know why.

Civilian oversight boards, Increased funding for training, more police, return of beat/community based policing, better response time for backup so officers can non lethally handle dudes with knives/bats/rakes.

I'm fairly sure that's the LAPD Chief. Might be at the deputies graduation ceremony they held earlier. I heard Snoop and company showed up in silent protest to start a dialogue of some kind.

The US Army, by act of Congress, the Posse Comitatus Act, is not allowed to act as law enforcement within the United States of America. This sounds good until you realize that it was passed to stop the Union Army from enforcing reconstruction in the south. Once Federal troops were removed Jim Crow really went into full swing.

That said that situation was literally the Army occupying the remains of a foreign country. Having the current law enforcement think of themselves as a military organization and everyone else as civilians means that essentially every city in America is under military occupation.

This is interesting, thanks.

Even though we really should have done more for Reconstruction, I ultimately feel the Posse Comitatus Act was the right choice.

I mean, I think we just need to rethink what the value is of having officers even involved in that situation. Why do we need to have someone pulling over someone for a "broken taillight"

The dude NRP dragged out to talk about it kept saying that you, the accused, need to make sure the officer feels "in control." This is the loving problem. We need to reverse course on thinking that police are the ones we need to make sure feel comfortable and in control.

That's...a fair point, but I'm mad about bad statistics so I'm going to keep banging the drum for my cause of choice.

http://www.npr.org/2015/09/17/441196546/is-there-a-war-on-police-the-statistics-say-no

quote:

When we're talking about 780,000 state and local police officers who are interacting with people on 67 million occasions every year,"

quote:

In 2014, the year of the Ferguson protests and increased media attention on police misconduct, 51 officers were killed nationwide.

The fun thing to me is the ratio - a police interaction in 2014 had a fatality rate of slightly under 1 in a million. Yet the narrative is "they put their lives on the line every day". Truck drivers are 3 times as likely to be killed on the job as a uniformed officer.
