In the UK, you wear a mandatory uniform to school from the ages of 4 to 16, but when you go to sixth form or college from 16-18, you can wear what you want (some sixth forms have uniforms, but not many). SInce college is meant to be a transitional thing from secondary school to University or work, you get some....interesting characters who try to express themselves. In my politics class there was a guy who wore edgy t-shirts and a trench coat and tried to edgelord out everyone by yelling about socialism and anarchy and the revolution. One day the teacher told him to knock it off and he punched a filing cabient and ran out and didn't come back. We found out that his parents were doctors, so he was very wealthy and middle class, just bad at hiding it. Other people in the class included a literal Nazi apologist, a spoiled rich girl who would whine about her parking space and gay people and a guy who thought it was funny to run across the tables. The teacher was a very nervous man who would come in late because he was smoking, rambling on about anything but the work and eventually left six weeks before the exam and was replaced by a turkish nationalist who would go on and on about why Turkey was the best country in Europe and how the EU was keeping them down. Somehow I passed that class. I was very glad to leave college and go to uni. Apparently it wasn't just my college, most of the UK colleges are full of odd balls trying to express themselves for the first time in a semi-adult enviroment.

Tequila Sunrise posted:I was friends with a pair of the "bad kids" that are well known in small towns. They were named Clete and Chase, and Clete was 2 years older than me. Every year we had "Spirit Week" where classes have competitions and on the last day every class has a color and whoever has the most/best costumes wins. We had a big assembly before school ended for the day, so all 500 of the students were in the gym and the principal was giving some speech on whatever. Clete's class was the color purple and halfway through the speech Clete burst into the auditorium wearing a full on KKK robe and had that was purple. He was carrying some fake torch and started screaming "Purple Power! Purple Power!" before getting dragged off by the school cop. Dressing up like a ghost during "Spirit Week" is a good idea. Clete just took it too far. Classic Clete. A goth kid in middle school wore a dress to a school dance. I think he ended up actually turning into a relatively normal person. He got into playing jazz guitar in high school and started listening to music that wasn't all grimdark buttrock and I think he went to college and got a normal job. This was way pre-facebook so I am working off of second hand sources here.

Am I too late to contribute my story about the very obese girl who would wear a cloak who later went on to buy a house and share it with 8-10 ferrets that would run around the house? I think it also goes without saying she smelled very bad.

To contribute to the thread I mean, we are all pretty much hosed in the grand scheme of things, so I welcome cloaks coming back into style before Armageddon

We had a guy at work who wore this trenchcoat and fedora and shortly after columbine they called the cops because he was walking through the parking lot with an umbrella slung across his back. I recently came upon a game this guy wrote in college in 1997 (we also went to the same college): The enemy names are most likely random girl's names but mine is included in the list.

My school also had a foxtail girl. Shock of all shocks, she was also president of the anime club. No cloaks though, maybe a couple of generic goths and emos. No odd ducks in college, though in my freshman year a lot of guys started wearing keffiyeh for some reason.

I wore a trench coat in high school, I also wore all black shirts and jncos. The Matrix had just come out and the whole Columbine thing. I wanted to be cool. I really wasn't. However, I did realize that wearing my trench coat out in snowy weather was amazing and I still have it for when it snows. Keeps me toasty warm. So, everything turned out ok. Never had a cloak kid though, we really didn't even have any furries or cat ear people which is really weird for a suburban white school. MY PALE GOTH SKIN posted:This would only happen if cloaks were a regular thing, made for wear by tailors/manufacturers who are taking things like "sometimes the ground is wet." I paid nearly 200 bucks for my cloak, and the first time it rained, I had a similar thought. Hey fellow hot topic goth However, while owning many a hot topic dress, I went to homecoming wearing a Victoria's Secret lingerie corset and a bedsheet as a skirt My friends included a girl who also wore hot topic all the time, a guy who literally only wore faded black jeans (the 90s kind where the ankle part is tight and the rest is huge) and oversized blue/black tshirts, every day. He would wear this outside, in 0 degree winter. I don't think he owned a coat. He did have some raggedy rear end black hoodies, but he only wore these indoors. Also a guy who would wear big black pants with big pockets, but not hot topic because he was poor or "too cool" for hot topic, so they were from wal mart, and various Asian-themed shirts. He also had a trench coat. Also he was balding at 16 so we called him "patches."

Oh and I forgot that I used to plaster and draw pics of JROCK bands everywhere, including my homework, and would sometimes bring my lovely early 2000s laptop to school to blast said JROCK music in the halls, and sometimes class. Teacher once got mad at me. But only once. Clearly they liked Gackt as well.PallasAthene posted:

I think the only existing photo is in the hands of the only-tshirts kid, who I don't have contact with anymore, but I'll ask my other friend (no longer goth). In any case I tried to tie it up in a pretty bun on my hip but I'm pretty sure it was obvious because I had used that bedsheet as...a bedsheet, and it was faded. Black obviously.

I lived with a guy in college that would regularly rollerblade around campus in a cheap pleather trenchcoat and a purple cape. Any time we went out anywhere he'd wear the coat, and would always want to bring the cape to parties. It was embarrassing by association but I think once he got a girlfriend he slowly realized the people saying it made him look ridiculous were right, but last time I visited him I spotted both things still in his closet ~8 years later.
