Outside of the crazies in the religious right there is basically nobody who thinks hating gays is cool anymore. I'd love to say that Trump can't possibly be dumb enough to pick a fundie as his VP but... it's Trump.

The only angle I can think of for Pence, aside from the small but real chance of becoming VP, is that he might think he can take over as the statesman of the campaign, release a bunch of policy things, do all the meetings with donors/party leaders, etc. All of the real politicking that Trump hates. And always be conveying his sympathies that Trump is loving everything up. Then when Trump loses, he can try to play it off like he was responsible for everything good and they would have won if not for Trump, and that he should be the nominee next time since now he has national campaign experience and connections.

Yeah, I agree. Being the running mate, even on a losing ticket, might be just the thing to bring him to national attention for the first time, and leave him well placed for bigger and better things. Hey, it worked for Paul Ryan. (Arguably.) So that's one possibility. The other possibility is that the only thing anyone will remember is the stench of Trump, and that would mean he threw away his kingdom in Indiana for nothing. Calculating the probabilities of which scenario is more likely is probably taking up a fair amount of Pence's time lately.
