Well first off i just like to say that i am touched that you took the time to scan through my previous posts under this account. Seems that i have touched you in some form are another . But from the inside she has witnessed a "definite energy" between Scotland and Ireland after last month's vote.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF RATHLIN

RATHLIN'S close association with Scotland stretches back to the early medieval period and far beyond, and in particular to the kingdom of D�l Riata, which encompassed much of western Scotland, and north-eastern Ireland, with Rathlin's role pivotal. A stop-off point for the Celtic Christian monks sailing north to Iona, in 1306 it is said Robert the Bruce sought refuge upon Rathlin, owned by the Irish Bissett family, staying in Rathlin Castle. It was also scene of the power struggles of the MacDonnells of Antrim and witnessed massacre at the hands of Covenanter Campbell soldiers in 1642. A century before Sir Francis Drake was sent to confront Scottish refugees on the island, and in the ensuing massacre, hundreds of men, women and children of Clan MacDonnell were killed.

In 1617 a legal action for the ownership of Rathlin was taken by a Scotsman named Crawford of Lisnorris. Crawford�s case rested on the claim that Rathlin had been granted to his ancestor in 1500 by James IV. The dispute ultimately came down to the introduction of a snake to the island. With St Patrick�s banishment of snakes from Ireland, if the serpent were to survive, the island must belong to Scotland. The unfortunate animal did not last long, and Rathlin�s Irish status was sealed. Rathlin was also the location of the world's first commercial wireless telegraphy link, established by employees of Guglielmo Marconi between the island and Ballycastle on the Irish mainland.

More recently, Richard Branson crashed his hot air balloon into the sea off Rathlin Island in 1987 after his record-breaking cross-Atlantic flight from Maine. Branson later returned to the island and presented the Rathlin Island Trust with �25,000 towards the renovation of its landmark Manor House.

David Greig is a good lad. For some academic navel-gaving: the line "Scottish plays peformed in Prague" stuck out for being a bit out of place, since it's the only one in that part which isn't "narrator encounters euro-thing in Scotland" - I've a sneaking suspicion that's a nod to Clare Wallace, who literally wrote the book on David Greig and is based in Prague

Still gutted I missed The Events a couple of years ago at the Fringe; I know someone who was vaguely involved in commissioning it, and it sounded amazing. Your post also sent me to his wiki, and I'd totally forgotten he's the new artistic director at the Lyceum. Really looking forward to seeing what he puts on....and also looking forward to when he moves on to the Citz because that's surely the next step, right?*

* nothing against Dominic Hill who's put of a lot of great stuff, even if he insists on no-back-wall-and-no-wings-actors-playing-instruments-exposing-the-workings-and-artificiality-of-theatre for every single drat play he directs. And I say that as someone who mostly likes gimmicky postmodernism. Fever Dream: Southside and his Hamlet were brilliant though, so it's a small price to pay

I'm a bit wary of Greig taking over, but the coming season does look rather good to be fair. I need to get to the Lyceum more this year, especially after I missed Waiting for Godot last autumn (I did try to get tickets for the final night but it was sold out by then

Dugdale is still exploring the federalised option for the UK. I'll give her credit where it's due, she's holding her guns and is actually doing something reasonable. Course considering it's a Guardian piece there is also a small bit of why Corbyn needs to go by Dugdale.

Not to make you feel worse, but Lanark was phenomenal. Not 100% sure if it would make a lick of sense if you haven't read the book, but it was a great piece of theatre, and the way it was structured - three distinct acts, two intervals and with the "realistic" act the most abstract in presentation - meant that it never sagged, which for a 3 1/2 - 4 hour play is unbelievably impressive.

The Citz has had a really great programme for the last few years, but this Autumn's is slightly unimaginative - and seems to have a slightly mis-timed "SCOTLAND!!!" theme. It's not bad or anything though: Glasgow Girls (which is great and all - and by David Greig! - but it's been on twice already in the last few years), Trainspotting (the play adaptation pre-dates the film, but unless it's a radically unusual production it seems a bit, I dunno, uninteresting for the Citizens), the Rivals (which I know very little about, but I'm an 18th century nerd so the prospect of Georgian sensibilities filtered through Dominic Hill is appealing) and Cheviot (which of course I'll go see again)

Cheviot is coming to the Lyceum as well - I got booked up a couple of weeks ago (might go twice though cos my seats are a bit poo poo for the date I'd planned).
I've never got around to reading the book shamefully, so I'll tell myself it wouldn't have made sense to avoid the guilt!
To be fair, I've still not seen Glasgow Girls - I think it's doing the Fringe too? I'm sure I put it on my list for that, very late to the party (I at least was earlier than most folk to Black Watch, so I'm not a total disaster!)

While I do understand the allure of a good wool shop (they are pretty hard to find these days) that challenge doesn't make much sense - she could just trawl second hand shops buying up knitted clothes. The judge should have set her a more specific challenge.
