Mike will made it is responsible for all the garbage mixing apparently.

One of the engineers, he's a great engineer. He was like, "Man, Mike, I can't put my name on this if it sounds distorted like that.” I was just like, “Bruh, I don't mean no disrespect by this, but you might not have to put your name on it!" We gotta have this poo poo sounding dirty, we gotta have this poo poo sounding new.

I think I could keep reading interviews with billy woods for ever, they make me realize how I'm too dense to get many of the crazy references he makes... makes me appreciate the songs even more. Definitely my favorite lyricist out there right now. Stuff like this just blows my mind. And somehow it doesn't feel forced to me. Is there anyone out there that does stuff like this? Yeah, DOOM has the storytelling part down but his references are nowhere near as crazy, imo.

DOOM's lyrics are a bit trickier than you're giving him credit for. It's just he also has a lot more straightforward stuff. Aesop Rock was mentioned as a dude that's similar, but I'd also say the Hellfyre Club dudes would fit the bill for dudes still putting out stuff that's really dense with references (Busdriver, Open Mike Eagle, Milo). Euclid's another dude out there that kinda reminds me of billy woods. Kendrick and Ab-Soul as well for sure.

Also Blank Face totally lives up to Habits & Contradictions. Good to see Q got rid of a lot of the cornier poo poo that was on Oxymoron.

You have to be a certain age and complexion to understand half of what's Doom's talking about. Sometimes I check rap genius to see if they get it and lol.

If those were the original lyrics in the Drake and French track, I guess Joe isn't so crazy for assuming he was being dissed. I think it would have been smarter for him to wait until the track actually came out though.

You might be right, don't get me wrong - I love DOOM. Madvillainy, Take Me To Your Leader & Vaudeville Villain are some of my favourite albums. But he doesn't quite scratch that exact itch (which is a futile thing to look for, I suppose).
Open Mike Eagle I've listened to, really enjoyed the A Special Episode Of EP, haven't checked out the other stuff much yet. Think I actually listened to his podcast (seemingly on hiatus now) before I ever listened to him.
Heard Busdriver and Milo featured on other stuff, suggestions on where to start with them?
Elucid's a given since he's a part of Armand Hammer. Couldn't get into his latest, Save Yourself, but I have to give it more listens.
Everybody loves Duckworth but he is way different imo. Not a fan of Ab-Soul.

You might be right, guess I'll find out about part of that in some years. Yeah, the annotations on Genius are often really dumb. Love it when the artists give info themselves, Pusha has some great stories there.

Yeah. It's really sad. A couple years ago I got turned on to the idea that the whole rap culture is generating these doods and throwing them away. An aspect of voyuerism. Not to sound like a jerk, but Kodak is not educated. He uses a couple phrases word for word in different songs.

He's a product of his environment. His art reflects it, and it's a tragedy that we benefit from his loss.

Milo's last album is really the only thing of his I like, but it's really good. If you like that go ahead and check his previous album, but I'm not a fan. I'd probably start with Perfect Hair for Busdriver, and also check one of his older albums (I'd say Fear of a Black Tangent). Perfect Hair is gonna sound more similar to everything Roadkill Overcoat and newer (excepting maybe Thumbs, which is more like his older stuff imo). Fear of a Black Tangent is very representative of his older stuff.

Also if you haven't heard Born Like This by DOOM, definitely give that a listen. Super underrated album, and there's all sorts of stuff in there to unpack imo.
