Very dadly. Reminds me a lot of the LaChoy canned chicken chow mein for some reason. And my father used to serve that stuff over boil in bag rice on the regular. Five dry-ish fish to the tin with a thick sauce. Currently finishing the rice from my brunch bowl while putting groceries away. I'll be getting more for the work stash so I can just make rice and maybe a side to drag with me and crack open a can at break. Not good by any stretch but reasonably spicy and serviceable fishes.

I have to say that for the really cheap dines that Bumblebee is much better than Chicken of the Sea. I'll only get Chicken of the Sea if they are all the store carries.

I think I've posted this basic recipe before but oh well

coarse ground black pepper
pinch of hot chili powder (I used a 'south american blend' of totally unknown composition)
1 tin Riga sprats, drained
couple of cups of jarred pasta sauce
2 giant pinches freeze dried parsley
generous squirt citrus (i used lime)

Mix first 4 ingredients in a saucepan, adding enough jarred sauce to make it whatever consistency you like and flaking the sardines into pretty small pieces. In this photo mine was pretty thick, like a meat sauce. Heat to a simmer and leave on low while the pasta cooks. Mix in the parsley and citrus once you're ready to serve (here on cavatappi)

Is there anything actual useful to do with the oil from drained dines?1
Edit: and tangentially to that, do you assume the nutrition info on a can of dines is with or without the oil?

Dump it in a pan with some garlic and fry your bread in it so that you have crusty 'dine garlic bread.

Use it as a fishy oil. Garlic bread, eggs, mayonnaise, whatever you would normally do with oil can be done with 'dine oil. I have a container of mixed sardine oil in my fridge that I use for all sorts of things.

I have the exact opposite experience. I got a bumblebee can once that smelled bad enough to make me gag but have enjoyed all the chicken of the sea cans I've bought.

Weird. It could be luck of the draw, I suppose, but in my experience it has been pretty consistent that Bumblebee are better than Chicken of the Sea.

So I was at this restaurant called Cheese Bar & was all set to order a Cubano when I noticed his on the specials board:

Spanish sardines, piparra peppers, preserved lemon, Napa cabbage & grain mustard on a baguette. Glad I opted for this instead.

you bring a salad to work and when your co-workers mock you for such a girly lunch, you whip out the salad dressing you made from smoked sardine oil and effectively mark your dadliness like a tomcat pissing in the breakroom

Sardines + sandwich is a combination I'd never considered but that sounds amazing.

Anyone have an opinion on how Matiz Gallego sardines compare to King Oscar? They're currently about the same or cheaper than KO on Amazon Prime and I am curious to try them. They don't sell them in stores near me.

Hey are you still selling your awesome sardine tin art or did I miss my opportunity? Or maybe you died in a tragic sardine can accident. Truly the deadlist form of art :(

K.O. Mediterraneans crisped up in a skillet and dumped over a bed of roasted garlic/herb/bell pepper pilaf is delicious. Far superior to cold Mediterraneans.
