He probably got it from eBay's many fire sales on refurbished watches. No clue who's doing the refurbishing though. The little shop beside the payday loan and cricket store? Probably.

How much was it? I feel like there's been enough deals on it that you might as well wait for another deal to buy new.

270 for the space grey with black sports band.

I think it's even lower on Groupon.

The problem is the more I read about refurb units from 3rd parties the less inclined I am to pull the trigger.

I've looked into rangefinders for golf and they're pretty drat expensive and with all the other things you can do with the watch I feel like I'm justified in buying it. Plus it's a gift card that I've had laying around for months and it will cover the full price no problem. And I can have it tomorrow.

Sport is $249 on Groupon sold by "GrouponGoods", and there's no mention of any warranty on the page (which the Groupon FAQ page says would be there if there was any warranty).

E: Lmao knows this, but for others the Groupon one is refurbished.

This is what worries me about the deal. On woot I can get a square trade warranty but I'd rather go with AppleCare.

I would buy it from Apple then get Applecare+ then enjoy your watch and the two things you might do with it until watchOS 3 comes out and magically fixes it.

I would imagine that "refurbished" on the Apple Watch means "used".

At most they might have replaced the screen with a dodgy third party spare.

Refurbished Apple products from anywhere that isn't Apple is usually a bad idea. I would bet Best Buy and target occasionally have Watch sales anyway if you look enough.

Being able to control Spotify without taking my phone out of my pocket on the subway is great.

Hopefully I'll get out on the course this weekend and test out The Grint.

Wrong. It's not just kind of worthless, it's totally worthless. Really dumb to use the biggest button on the device for something that no one uses.

How do you change which apps show up there?

That’s like the main thing they showed during the demo!

Not that I remember how it works exactly, but I think to remove you swipe up, like how you trash watch faces. To add I think you hit the button and you can add the currently running app.

Edit: you can probably tweak it from the phone app too like the other stuff now.

Haven’t thought about that, but I vaguely recall more (if not neatly all) app logic and stuff moving to the watch, vs the still somewhat segregated model in OS 2. Might be completely wrong there though, but I’m guessing I saw it in the WWDC platforms keynote or the new stuff in Apple Watch specific presentation.

I'm hoping whatever they do address Runkeeper. It's the app I use the most since I'm running daily and it's frustrating to have it crash and lose "connection" to the phone app. So trying to open the watch app after a crash only gives you the option to start a run instead of realizing "oh hey there's a run already being tracked".

What are the features you like in Runkeeper vs the workouts app? Honest question since I've been lazy or indifferent about trying out other running apps, plus it sounds like OS 3 addresses the main shortcomings I have with it anyway.

Stats/route tracking on runkeeper is pretty nice plus I use a couple of their training plans / goals are pretty dynamic and good at motivating me. Once you have the plan set you can pretty much start and log your runs on the watch without ever opening the phone. So I just throw the phone on the armband and get going. Only when the app crashes I need to actually use the phone to end the run. Which nowadays is every run.

It also has pocket track which automatically logs any 15+ minute walk even if you're not using the app.

The pro subscription is not needed. It lets you set routes on their site which you can then follow, shows you more info about your runs, and has live tracking if so others can see you run (I have no idea why this is a thing but apparently it is?). They like to throw discounts on it all the time, especially if you do their monthly 5k/10k challenges or beat your own records enough times.

Oh and I also use it for snowboarding during winter.

Restart the app on your watch and then just let your watch go idle for a bit. It will pretty quickly resync with your current run. I do this all the time.

Rumours are that iPhone7 or whatever it'll be called is set for mid September, wondering if that makes it more or less likely that the Watch will see a refresh announcement then. I know the original watch had its own event, but essentially it was a brand new product launch so I wouldn't have expected anything but. Maybe they can double it up now.

Stil holding out hope that we'll see something in Sept.

In retrospect, all the blogs were saying AW is a "don't buy, refresh is close" but I should have just picked up a secondhand AW and flipped it whenever AW2 hits.

Don't. There's barely a game and my battery life was noticeably reduced (shortened enough that I couldn't keep it on all day without going into battery saver mode at night).

Does anyone know what's up with the Now Playing app not syncing to Spotify? This could be because I have the Watch OS 3 beta, but sync problems are fairly common in general with the Apple Watch.

Right now, "now playing" only syncs to Apple music stuff. I hope this isn't a foreshadowing of Apple loving Spotify over in the new OS.

I go on daily walks for up to an hour and it's so luxurious not having to take the phone out to flip through a playlist. Now I have to use the Joy app, which is not the worst, but it was so easy to use the baked-in functionality of Now Playing.

On my non-beta setup the Now Playing app only does iTunes stuff, but the ... Media Control (?) glance controls Spotify (pause/play, volume, forward, back).

Edit: I guess the glance is called Now Playing, and the app is Music, which has a Now Playing button. Glance recognizes Spotify, app doesn't.

It works fine, but I regret it. Your phone has to be on iOS 10 for it to work, but if you want to go back to iOS 9, you're out of luck, kinda. The watch can't be downgraded by a user, it has to be sent to Apple. So going to iOS 9 means spending 3 days without a watch.
