one of my profs was a retired nasa software engineer who would fail your submissions if you had enough spelling/grammar/punctuation errors in your code's documentation even if it worked flawlessly I thought he was a colossal dick but he beat some good habits into us that I now appreciate thanks, prof

In my current job I have the title Telecom Operation Engineer even though I only qualify for Technician if you look at my formal education. I like to say that Engineering is the new Technician in mobile and broadcasting services.

the first software firm that i worked for was literally named "Software Engineering Technology", run by that same CS department head i mentioned earlier who didn't have a PE certificate and I don't think any of the supervisors did either and they contracted with the DoD. now that i think about it it's kinda surprising they never got busted

AFAIK you can call yourself a [something] engineer and be fine, you just can't call yourself a regular engineer without a PE certificate. Otherwise they would've busted every train engineer a long time ago.

Nowhere did I say that railroad engineers don't have to undergo any training. But whatever. Y'all wanna get butthurt over a programmer calling themselves a software engineer, fine. Like, it'd be one thing if people expected software engineers to be able to design a dam or whatever, or if software engineers were trying to pass themselves off as PE certified, but no one is doing that.
