I don't know enough about Gulen and his allies to know whether him being behind the coup is feasible. The opposition parties backing the Erdogan government is so strange.

So I wonder what the US is doing to keep Turkish Intelligence from assassinating Gulen? I assume at the least there are some FBI agents camped down the street.

Incirlik isn't a US base, it's a Turkish base belonging to Turkey's Turkish Air Force of Turkish Turkey, and it merely happens to be graceful host to US and other NATO forces, which are there as guests, and not as lord proprietors. In fact the US had to negotiate with Turkey to be allowed to use the base for raids against Daesh. And the US nukes in Incirlik are gravity bombs, not ballistic missiles. Nuclear sharing is done only with gravity bombs.

Yep. It's like 500m away from where my grandfather lives and along his route to some shops or metro station. While the collateral damage appears to be minimal, it's way too close for comfort. Unsurprisingly, he wasn't on friendly terms with Moscow so that might have something to do with it . Despite all the shittiness, it's hasn't been too common for journalists to be murdered in Kyiv so this is definitely a very unwelcome development. RIP Pavel of course. Here's a BBC article: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-36843808 And the original Ukrainian one from his employer: http://www.pravda.com.ua/news/2016/07/20/7115344/ Edit: Apparently a Ukrainain Forbes journalist was stabbed in a park yesterday by an unknown man. No other information, though it looks like she wasn't seriously injured. mobby_6kl fucked around with this message at 14:33 on Jul 20, 2016 |

So here's a fun story from Zlovenia. The local cardinal was visiting from Vatican and of course also held a mass last week. It was, and this is no joke, dedicated to the Nazi collaboration during ww2. During said mass, he said the "real national traitors" were the communists doing a revolution, and that the collaborators, or as he called them, "patriotic and democratic forces", were only doing a contrarevolution (), and were "forced to accept and use invader help and weapons". Not only is this an absolutely hilarious attempt at some revision of history, he also managed to call everyone (yes, everyone) who fought against the 3rd Reich a manipulated puppet of communism. Which is, as we all know, an ideology of fear and loathing. It's really unfortunate this country is completely inconsequential to absolutely everything, I'd love to see the Catholic Church try to spin this if it was said at some bigger, more visible event. mobby_6kl posted:Here's a BBC article: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-36843808 Eastern Europe is turning into a loving James Bond movie. e: and I obviously don't mean this in a good way. In Slovenia, luckily these people have relatively little throw, and the hardcore right wing parties supporting this kind of bullshit have been getting less and less support since about 2008. It's also a slightly bigger deal here, because I think we're the only place where poo poo got so bad the SS had to step in and tell the locals to tone it down a little

The rise of violent right wing nationalism in russia is ok because their violent racist thugs celebrate the winning side of WWII, the rise of violent right wing nationalism in post-soviet countries is bad because they celebrate the losing side of WWII. The violence and ideology don't matter, just which side they look back upon fondly.

When someone said that attack was pretty self-contained, they weren't kidding. It took 5 seconds for that one guy to even turn around realize what was going on. There's one bystander who strolls completely off camera immediately after the explosion. I'm guessing that some folks thought it was a car accident at first and not a car bomb.

Der Spiegel did an interview with a Russian foreign policy advisor. The tldr is that Russia is strong and Europe is betraying their own values (via Muslim immigrants). There's a lot that just seems nonsensical such as Karaganov posted:Many of my colleagues view our European partners with derision and I always warn them not to be cocky and arrogant. Some among the European elite have sought out confrontation with us. As a consequence, we won't help Europe, although we could do so when it comes to the refugee question. A joint closure of borders would be essential. In this regard, the Russians would be 10 times more effective than the Europeans. Instead, you have tried to make a deal with Turkey. That is a disgrace. In the face of our problems with Turkey, we have pursued a clear, hard political line -- with success. Beyond that the interview gives off an exuberant kind of "we are winning" vibe. I'm really struggling to see what Russia has really achieved though. In 10 years two important partners of Russia has been practically destroyed. Ukraine is irrevocably lost from Russia's Eurasian project and Ukraine's economy is completely in the shitter. I mean Ukraine mostly trades with Russia - it's not helping Russia to destroy it. Syria is a basket case and Russia undoubtedly help fund its survival and will continue to have to do so for the foreseeable future. Economic growth and the well-being of the Russian people seems to be entirely incidental to the main objective - to enforce their will and be a Great Power! What they aim to achieve with it, what the vision is... I just don't know.

Russia may not be winning exactly but the destabilization of Europe is a good thing for them. Brexit may well be the beginning of the end of the EU, the failed possibly staged coup in Turkey may end up driving Turkey out of NATO and has certainly ended any aspirations of EU membership for them. The migrant crisis and stagnant economy are driving euroskeptic nationalism up and down the continent. There's also the matter of a seemingly endless deluge of terrorist attacks. These are all positives for Russia because they undermine liberalism and unity on the continent so despite their own problems I can see why they'd be optimistic.
