I had a game the other day where the only person talking was a 12-year-old chattering about youtube stars I don't know and asking his mom to eat dinner at Applebee's. I honestly thought it was kind of adorable. Judging by his profile he was clearly a Tracer main and I think he got 12 total kills in a KotH match.

He also bitched that I got PotG for only two kills with riptire, an ulting Bastion and an ulting Soldier, both standing on the point in overtime. Still adorable.

Katamari do your best!
Watching this developer update video about Ana, he mentions there being some characters who are meant to work better for better players and have a higher skill ceiling. The examples he gives are Tracer and Zarya, both of which are rated as 3-star difficulty.
Some of the other ones with 3-star ratings are Mei and Zenyatta, but these characters don't seen to appeal to high level players that much.
I always thought the star rating was more like "how easy is this for a new player to understand right away?" But it seems like they think Mei has a high skill ceiling, which is clearly not the case.
Meanwhile, Pharah seems to have a lot of potential at high levels, but she has a 1-star rating.
What is up with this system?

I think it relates to difficulty to use as intended. Mei's skillset isn't complicated, but the difference between a shitlord Mei and a Meidolf Hitler is huge. It's very easy to gently caress your entire team over as Mei. Mei is difficult to master and use to her highest capability. I can't remember the last time I saw a Mei effectively use an ice wall outside of "i dun blockdeded damage" when in reality it's a fantastic escape tool, ult blocker, and, my personal favorite use, cutting off a healer and tank from the rest of their team for a quick burn down.

Some of them are a little arbitrary, and their difficulty has changed as patches have buffed/nerfed some of them. Old Zenyatta at 150 HP was absolutely a 3 star because of how you'd crumple like cardboard as soon as anyone so much as looked at you, but he's probably only 1 or 2 stars now (given the relative simplicity of his actual gameplay and the fewer concerns he has about dying instantly). I'd put Pharah at about 2 stars, just because learning how to dodge around in the air to discourage getting hitscanned to death does require a reasonable amount of practice before you can get comfortable with flying.

I'm a fan of ice walls on KOTH maps to delay the enemy team access to the point, especially at the end of a match or during OT. I also like to watch the spawn at the start of a match to throw up a wall. Bonus points if I have a teammate or two with me and I time the wall to only let out one enemy and trap the rest inside. It's a very easy early game kill.

I wish there was a way to quantify good ice wall placements instead of just damage blocked.

Maybe stop launching yourself unthinkingly into the air like the world's laziest clay pigeon and this won't happen. My Pharah game improved tremendously when I realized that it actually isn't very advantageous to stay airborne as often as possible and that "people don't look up" only lasts for the first rocket or two.

I've been using her rocket jump as a defensive maneuver more than anything lately. I like holding it until I need to react to someone as a means of equalizing the initiative they've taken.

Obviously this won't be a hard rule, but it's been working out pretty well when I've felt like keeping the cooldown up if it won't be detrimental to the objective

For sure you don't want to just "unthinkingly" do it. But I mean..its kind of Pharah's thing. Otherwise you're just a slow moving ground target that can't get around the REin shield. Having a McCree on the enemy team can just shut down every advantage of having a Pharah. Which may be working as intended but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

This is one way I like to use it for sure, if someone surprises you then launch a rocket, immediately hit your jets, then lob another one, even if they're right in your face the small splash radius works for you in that instance. Flight is good and useful, but an airborne Pharah doesn't really move that fast and while bobbing and weaving can make you a little tricky to pin down the fact remains that some folks are just really good at clicking on heads with hitscan weapons, and even pre McCree buff it wasn't like good Soldier players didn't exist. Keeping your jumpjets in your pocket for when you suddenly really need to throw people off is a good use of them, and you can find higher ground and advantageous angles to peek-fire from without having to fly 24/7 which is what I see a lot of Pharahs trying to do.

As roadhog, I hook her get my free shot/melee. Then wait for her to to either shoot (and i return fire) or matrix and I just sit there in front of her being fat (really good at it from rl). Force her to keep it up for a long time, then she cant block anything for more than a second.

Zarya's pretty good against her. Defense Matrix doesn't help against the beam, and the shield is good to keep her from molesting your squishier teammates. With some charge, the secondary blast is also pretty useful to take down Zero Suit D.Va with splash damage once she's out of the mech. Soldier and McCree are also decent, since they can just wait for the periods when the matrix is down and comfortably stay at a distance where D.Va's return fire doesn't matter.

I avoid making clumps of the other team. I try to position my walls to split them as often as possible. When I use walls at the end of KOTH matches to block the point to let the overtime counter down I try to only do it if there is one or two dudes racing to the point to reset the countdown. I'm curious to see how the new countdown works, it seems to go very quickly so maybe walls won't be as critical in preventing countdown resets.

Another fun use of the wall is on payload maps when you have your ult ready. Drop a wall in front of the car so it stalls out and just before the wall breaks away drop the ult while the other team is piled ready to push the cart. At the very least the team scatters and kills any momentum they were about to enjoy.

Cursed to like terrible teams.
Here are my stupid and probably unwanted thoughts on competitive when mostly solo-queuing:

I think there should be a wider variance in ranks when selecting players for solo-queue teams. I play 90% of the time solo-queue and noticed that most players are about 2 ranks difference. I think it would be cool instead to have teams like:

Ranks: 44,48,52,52,56,60
Rather than: 49,49,50,50,51,51

I think that right now your rank is much too weighted towards your placement rank and it is really difficult to gain any momentum in changing your rank (down or up).

If your placement was within 10 points of your true rank (in a perfectly measured world), you could probably stay at whichever rank you are currently, because winning roughly 50% of your games has a lot less to do with your own personal skill than your luck in teammates, this is not a 1v1 game (if you are within 10 ish ranks of your true rank).

Currently, only vastly misranked players will be able to build win/loss momentum to affect their rank towards a more appropriate spot.

Anyway, I think there should be a lot more variance in rank in solo-queue team makeup.

This could have two positive effects (according to me anyway):

1) You will face a wider variety of skill in your matches which could be very good learning experiences to improve your own play

2) A chance for higher risk and reward for each match instead your rank mobility being based off win/loss momentum. (i.e. in some cases you will be the highest ranked, and the stakes will be much higher, in other cases you’ll be right in the middle.)

That or make ranks a lot less granular... like have 10 ranks.

My experience in games like this (where say a rank 40 and a rank 60 are grouped and thus get placed in a 50 game) is that they're complete poo poo dominated by the high rank character. The rank 60 just chooses a carry character, constantly murders the other team, and none of the other 11 players learn anything other than that they're much worse at the game than the 60.

I think 10 or so rank difference would be acceptable. When I was 58 I killed people at rank 60 with ease, and would presumably still do so if I actually got to fight them at rank 54.
