Was just watching the Battle for Zion scene from Matrix Revolutions on youtube, and realised how much fun this would be to play in VR with touch controls. It's basically perfect for VR, very little movement and 2 giant guns you just hold out in front of you and blast away. Full 360 view to shoot at the sentinels that get passed you. Multiplayer would be a blast, and you could even have people manning turrets along with the mechs. There would be no way to win, the only goal is to see who can last the longest.

https://github.com/Hotrian/OpenVRDesktopDisplayPortal Looks like someone made a screen injector (ie have windows of other programs running inside of VR apps) Someone should try it out, this would fulfill my dream of space trucking in Elite while watching tv like a fatass

Friendly reminder that Vibe owners should look into those aftermarket VR covers that have been making the rounds. They fix the blur at the edges of the lenses and are sweat proof/easy to clean.

What is it that causes that blur, anyway? I figured I just didn't have the fit right, but is it something else?

Apparently the optics aren't perfect yet in a 1st gen device! Real answer, it's really hard to make lens work for such a huge fov and keep image quality good all across it, even with the fresnel trick. Getting closer makes it a bit better, but it's still nowhere perfect. Truga fucked around with this message at 12:17 on Jul 21, 2016 |

Lemming posted:https://github.com/Hotrian/OpenVRDesktopDisplayPortal Trip report: Totally works in elite! You can position the overlay anywhere in the world, and even make it to fade away or shrink when you're not looking directly at it. The frame rate is too low for movies though. I tried with Chrome and MPC-HC, Chrome was a slideshow, MPC worked OK for talking heads, but action scenes were still horrible. Edit: Could be that the low frame rate is something on my end. Overlay update. For some reason shrinking down the window does wonders to the FPS. It's also possible to run multiple overlays at once, by running multiple instances of the program. Now you too can watch top tier animes and reading shitposts while flying your spaceship.

Heads up, apparently that overlay does NOT work with the Rift in some games, most prominently Elite. It uses SteamVR and those games forcibly use Oculus's rendering solution, which prevents it from working. Hopes crashed like when I tried to land on a 5g planet.

I approve of watching Macross Delta while playing Elite. Hopefully someone finds a way to do this natively in the Rift.

In principle it should be possible to get it working by hiding the Rift dlls from Elite but not from SteamVR; that'd require a bunch of messy copying and renaming of DLLs each time you run it, though. Stormangel posted:I approve of watching Macross Delta while playing Elite. It'd be possible for someone to implement it in the Rift software using the same approach ReVive takes, it's just substantially more work. Valve provide an official mechanism for putting overlay windows in the VR scene, in Oculus it would have to be done by hand.

They said that Elite has issues due to its Engine not being Unity/Unreal so its taking them a bit longer to get it working. Probably the same reason it isn't working for Rift in Elite either which is unfortunate. The second it works in the Rift and Elite is the second I am back to playing Elite. At least we know we are close.

Probably the big limitation there is that VR only tracks your head (and hands if you have the Vive or Touch). Most games do a decent job of predicting where the rest of your body is, but they couldn't let you kick down buildings without full body (or at least foot) tracking.

I spent most of last night playing Raw Data and it was semi impressive. I was blown away by Audioshield though. It just feels so real. As someone who didn't believe the VR hype I can definitely say it's real and what you think it is. Granted it's not at the level you think it might be, but it's close and I couldn't imagine how disorientating and amazing a full body experience one would be like. It also makes me wish I knew how to develop games because I have so many ideas for this thing.

Hmm. After installing a 1070 in my box, Steam's VR readiness tool gives me a pass, while Oculus' says I need to upgrade my i5-2500. Anyone tried running a lot of VR games with a below-minimum CPU?

# ? Jul 29, 2016 01:26 |

I think you'll probably be largely OK except for CPU intensive things like Job Simulator
|
# ? Jul 29, 2016 01:36 |

The Oculus tool isn't a benchmark, it just checks what the model name is. The Steam benchmark doesn't really test CPU either though I guess it technically tests the CPU a little as it runs a graphics test.
