The Pokemon Go/animal shelter thing is unfortunately poo poo that didn't happen (mostly): http://www.snopes.com/pokemon-go-dog-walking-program/ They did say feel free to come walk dogs while you play Pokemon Go, but that's about it.

That story seems to have snowballed since it was first posted...the article I saw said nothing about them getting any money or the dogs getting adopted, just the ad and some twitter posts from people who were walking the dogs. My co-worker in his late 30s is addicted to Pokemon GO, uses it all drat day. He even admitted to taping his phone to the ceiling fan at night to fake walking for incubation. Also a bunch of adult players all hang around one park nearby at night playing til the early morning hours and get pizzas delivered there.

It uses the GPS for movement, not the accelerometers, and I don’t think it cares about movement that small. When Im sitting in my office if i leave tit open I register around .7-1 KM of walking per day. So I think the drift really works but I've never tried the ceiling fan thing.

And the game DOES register the small GPS twitches if you're sitting, because I have it active while at my desk, and my egg counters will slowly inch up, even though I'm not moving.
