WORST STARSHIP EVER

Well, I liked it how in Beyond, they didn't beat the bad guys by shooting lasers at them. They killed them with music. It was like, the most Macross thing ever. Beyond was good. ...gently caress, CBS really wants to kill Star Trek it seems.

The video got taken down. Is this actually what it showed? I kind of like it. It's weird and different.

Here's to the 1031-A! Just saying, blowing up your hero ship and replacing it with a new model would be a pretty cool first season cliffhanger.

I actually like the new ship a lot more than most of the ships that ship nerds post as examples of the best ships. Ships.

I'm hoping they've taken it down due to an overwhelmingly negative response

It's definitely some Fed-Klingon hybrid, with the D7-like fuselage and nacelles and angular aesthetic (as well as all the audio cues going on in the theme). If it's Prime, I'm guessing that it's some sort of period between Undiscovered Country/Generations and TNG, where there could have been a Federation-Klingon alliance that eventually got broken by the time TNG came around. It would fit nicely with the analogy that Star Trek presented of Klingons as the Russians. Young Freud fucked around with this message at 01:09 on Jul 24, 2016 |

...I'll maybe be less annoyed with it if they reveal it's a joint Klingon-Federation ship on some secret mission. Doubly so if we get comedy bridge where one half is totally Bird of Prey, and the other half is proto-Galaxy hotel-lobby-in-space.

A Federation ship with a poorly lit bridge that's made out of rusted metal alloys, surrounded by a vaguely smokey haze. These are the adventures of the USS Tetanus.

I'd be more interested if it didn't have Alex loving Kurtzman as a writer and producer.

I seriously thought that was a fan render when I first saw it. I had no clue it had anything to do with the new series until the end of the teaser. That was awful.

This show may turn out to be poo poo, in fact it's a pretty good bet that it will, but it's not going to be because the ship is ugly and the effects are cheap. It's loving Star Trek we're talking about here. The starship's aesthetic sucks, it's not just the quality of the CGI, although if it comes out looking like Reboot in 2016, yeah, that's gonna count against it.

What if this actually is set in the future of the TNG timeline? Klingons join the Federation, there's a big technology share, Starfleet restarts the registry numbering, and that's why Discovery looks like an unholy mashup of the two design languages.

There's also thisquote:Fuller answered the question of whether the Discovery, just revealed, was based on Ralph McQuarrie’s ‘70s designs for the Enterprise. Fuller said it was, but “to a point that we can’t legally comment on it until [our legal team] figures out some things.” I'm assuming this would be because McQuarrie created that concept for a film, making it the property of Paramount and not CBS? Maybe Paramount's legal team will save us from that design.

That looks like a 80s Fender Flying V made out of a pizza box. So I could buy it as a post TUC/pre-TNG prototype... but then the registry would have to be an NX, right?

The Oberth is an adorable little ship that reminds me of boats. It's a cute little spaceboat. oh hi there I'm an Oberth class ship here to scan some anomalies, what's this cube shaped- OH GOD OH GHODODA WHAT ITS EATING MEEEE AOGHghg

My guess: the Discovery is a Federation-Klingon joint venture, and much of the show will focus on how two fundamentally different cultures and ideologies can cooperate and understand one another. Essentially, an allegory for Western liberal democracy vs Middle Eastern islamism, in the tradition of TOS's cold war allegories, TNG's environmental and social issues allegories, and ENT's terrorism allegory. For era, post Undiscovered Country, pre-TNG makes the most sense canonically. Although the registry number points towards pre-TOS, which could work, but then we'd know whatever understanding's reached would only be temporary. If it's post-Voyager, I don't see the allegory working. By then, the Federation and Klingons have had strong relations for a long time.

As a positive, the name of the show and the ship is pretty good. I like it for the ship more than the series, but it works and IS recognisably a Federation-y name.

My current theory/hope is that "Discovery" is a legacy name like Enterprise, and we're going to get teasers of the previous ships in awful CG before finally unveiling the USS Discovery-CDEF...etc. It really can't be this, right?
