I think Dominic Deegan was a great webcomic experience to enjoy, but that it was really a "you had to be there" thing. Specifically, you had to be there in a mock thread with a lot of funny edits. Pretty much all the Dominic Deegan threads on any forum where any existed were full of edits. It was magical. Sadly, this is all gone to the digital dustbin, along with everything else ever put on ImageShack and Photobucket.
As I recall, the "all the Dominic Deegan threads" list extended even to the official forums for the comic. Literally anywhere it was being discussed quickly transitioned into "wait this is pretty bad", including places that should have been full of rabid defenders of it.

The legend as I remember hearing it told was that the fans were willing to stomach the lovely art and uneven-but-not-horrendous parts of the writing up through the point where the storm of souls thing happened and Dominic saved the multiverse for the first of several times. After that it felt like as natural as an ending as the comic would get, but then it stood back up and lurched almost right away into heroic rapists. By that point it was 2005 and ongoing fantasy comics with better art and bearable writing had emerged from the primordial ooze so it hemorrhaged unironic fans like crazy aftet that.

The part that always stuck with me is that one comic summarizes a villain's origins, and it describes how he "worked his way into a wizard college on a scholarship" and it's not a joke.

Worked his way into a wizard college on a scholarship.

Worked his way into a wizard college.

Deegan desperately wanted to be Slayers, at least at the start.

Esit: I just remembered that the only black character was mind controlled into attempting rape.

Then the sorceress died with her rear end in the air and the gay swordsman with a death fetish made a joke about it.

There was a pretty common trend of villains in SD having dealt with strife and working hard to get where they are while the heroes are handed everything. I think the trend even continues in his Star Power comic.

I haven't seen Star Power mentioned much, mostly because it seems to be the unoffensive kind of bad instead of the pure magic bad that was DD. Did that ever change or is it still just lurching along?

Bobulus

I've loaded it up once or twice, and it's still just kinda mediocre. He's got a lot of the same issues as with Dominic Deegan (throwing together a large ensemble cast when it isn't needed for one thing, making bad guys way too over-the-top evil for another) but it never quite stumbles enough to hit 'hilariously bad' levels like DD.

The first "elected" king, I think.

It's the Flintstones with magic instead of dinosaurs. It even had a magic plastic surgery / fertility clinic with porn magazines -- magic plastic surgery is bad because it's unnatural and Dominic prefers real women.

And a nerd goes to naked Werewolf College to bully them with his ice magic. This is portrayed as a good thing and cool.

Stand Still Stay Silent has just had a pre-apocalyptic minister show up in a vision while Ginger the Pagan tries to learn out what a church is, and somehow despite her being a completely normal-looking minister that isn't contorting herself into some plague-ridden troll or spooky spirit I'm thoroughly alarmed. That minister is doing a very good job of setting off an "oh poo poo" alarm in my head, which is remarkable because she hasn't done anything.

Well, it probably doesn't help that Onni is losing his poo poo at the sight of her.

The spirit realm in SSSS looks like it should only be populated by nature spirits, mages, and the ravaged souls of the infected. Normal-looking people are probably serious anomalies and I wouldn't be surprised if this is connected to that specter that's been following the group since they left the research ward.

The antimagic field that opossums produce is linked to their heart. I suspect the Veil is trying to produce a really, really strong antimagic creator in order to deal with the apocalyptic prophecy. This tinkering with the heart (genetic engineering?) makes it less good at its normal function.

Interesting that she refers to Poppy living past 20 'naturally'. Does she not know about the pills?

The really funny part is that she's dead wrong. Octobaddy wasn't there for the key. She just happened to run across it while on her real mission to turn the queen into an octoagent. Of course, ol' bongopants can't take the opossum's read of the situation seriously, even though Fred is way closer to being correct. Nope, his emotions must just be getting the better of him.
