Oof, so I hit another lag spike point again.. seemed to be a creature causing it yet again, killed all the bandits and it went away, at least at first. Then as I was climbing a mountain, it started lagging a bit again, and I had my first experience of the unloaded chunk problem.. it loads in eventually.. then the game just completely locks up again.. I try ctrl-shift-esc to see what resources it's using up out of curiosity.. nothing, ctrl-alt-del?.. nothing either.. huh

I managed after a minute or two to get the menu open and save and quit. Then I was on the title screen, which was also lagging.. not good.. hit quit.. both my screens goes completely black.. still unresponsive to getting to task manager. Eventually it does come up, flash player has died its usual death, no sign of starbound processes active but it keeps spiking up cpu and the system is using 13gig of ram apparently

Just rebooted in the end, it did something wrong, that's for sure.

.. I mean, other than it trying to kill my PC, I'm mostly enjoying modded starbound!

I got a response this morning from my server host:

quote:

It would appear starbound has either got some very bad optimization in this update, or some severe memory leaks. Using 60% of the whole box's CPU and 20/32GB RAM on an E3-1270v3 node is not good at all.

So much so that it's making us consider either hiking the price significantly more for Starbound or disabling orders for it until further notice.

If it does keep up we may have to refund you unfortunately as using 20G of RAM and that amount of CPU we would say you'd need a dedicated server for that which would be at least £50-60 not £11.62 :(

I checked the usage graphs:

wow

It has to be a memory leak, because there are only 5 people online right now, but the server is using nineteen gigabytes of memory.

I've scanned a bunch of poo poo and it's not showing up on the furniture crafting table. I went through an avian village so I should have a bunch of bird stuff to craft, but I didn't when I needed to rent a room to a specifically bird person for a quest.

If you have unpacked your game's assets (in order to pull art out, look at how some things function in order to mod them, fix problems yourself, etc. etc.) and they are still in your game folder, move them out. Apparently the game is now trying to read them, when it didn't before, and that can cause major stability issues with the game.

I was going to recommend you the thread about this sort of thing in the support forum but I can see you've already posted there. Hopefully someone is seeing this, because there has been no official response in the support forum as far as I can tell, in any thread. I really hope it's because they're working on a bunch of fixes as fast as they can but my gut tells me otherwise.

Honestly, I think that the parts of the game not including combat are pretty nice. The music and art are really atmospheric, and exploring/collecting/building are really fun.

You need to recruit at least two crew members to get a license that allows the first upgrade. There are three ways (that I know of) to get crew:
1. Do random quests for NPCs, sometimes they'll offer to join your crew after you finish the quest. I've had this happen exactly once after doing ~25 quests.
2. Random quests will sometimes have you kill a specific named bandit, I've read it's possible for the bandit to surrender and offer to join your crew. I have yet to see this happen.
3. Do the quest at the outpost to defeat Dreadwing. Afterward you can purchase penguin mercenaries for 5000 pixels each.

Once you have the license, just talk to the vehicle merchant at the outpost.

Roughly 75 minutes for bananas, according to the wiki, which while one of the longer times, isn't not one of the longest times either.

Can't quickly find how long cotton seeds takes offhand though, sorry. Maybe you will get lucky and it will be in the 15-30 minute range type of crop? Though since it's a progression item, place your bets :v:

You can gently caress off while waiting for crops to grow in my experience, with the small problem that you need to water them again halfway through or so.

You also have to be there in person for it to count as watered if that wears out. Even if it's raining, if it's too far off screen it won't count :pseudo:

There is a reason one of my biggest wishlist item mods is "unfuck farming and tree planting". Even if it still takes ages, I want to pay more attention to exploring space in my space exploration game, than to babysit crops harder than harvest moon.

"Growth is calculated every 20 seconds, each of these periods is called a growth cycle. "

http://starbound.wikia.com/wiki/Farming

Again though, I hardly know if that's still matched for launch changes (And cotton seed isn't even on that list). Since they rate cotton up there with Tier 2 metal Tungsten as an armor progression item, I'm guessing it's probably not going to be in the small selection of "Less than 10-30 minutes" crops, unless someone snuck that under the Tiy radar.

EDIT: Two loving hours for NeonMelon. The melon that only exists for fun and has no recipes involving it that I can recall.

Please let that list be outdated in the "It's MORE fun now, not less!" sense

I got a quest to kill a bandit that two shot the escort that came with me and then proceeded to murder me a good 5 or 6 times right by my teleport point. His captured Pokemon was also murdering me in 2 hits. Eventually I whittled him down to like 15% and he was like "You're pretty good, can I join you?" and became a crewmate. And the quest giver said thanks and gave me some pixels

That still doesn't change that you can barely craft any weapons any more. And there are no set effects for armor. And all the best techs are gone.

Is there no way to get recipes for the end game weapons that aren't the lovely energy sword, laser pistol/bow, or the one staff? Or do I actually have to mod things back in?

JerikTelorian

Alright, I'm gonna make a mod to change farm times to something reasonable.

Looking at some charts now, there's 4 potential lengths for crop growth: ~20m (e.g., Carrot, Wheat); ~30m (e.g., Cotton, Tomato, Sugarcane), ~40m (e.g. Pineapple, Potato); and ~45m (e.g. Cocoa, Corn).

Ideally I'm going to keep these 4 groups (there's actually 5, but two are the same length but with different "stages") distinct, only because it's easier to make the mod. I'm thinking something like 6-9-12-15m? Thoughts?

Imagine a fish bowl. The bowl looks very pretty, very expensive, and yet it looks like someone smashed holes into it, and that's because someone DID smash holes into this bowl. Any water put into this just pours right out, most fish put in won't last an hour. But hey, other people really like this fish bowl, they want the bowl to hold as much fish as it can, so they start patching up the holes..The problem is, the tape they use, no matter how big or small, weak or strong it is, will just..break, sometimes. this fish bowl is a work of beauty, it has so much potential, but those holes can't be plugged up forever.

I've played about 10 hours or so of 1.0 and I can pretty confidently say it's now somehow less enjoyable than it was 3 years ago.

Other than the neat little vignettes that litter the world this game is absolute trash, I'm disappointed in myself for thinking this game would improve honestly, from the hunger mechanics to basically every design decision, every new thing they seemingly added has made me enjoy the game less.

6, 9 , 12, 15 sounds like a good launching points. Keeps the balance how it seems to be intended, with certain crops being rarer for you until you can get massive farms up and going, but nothing is outright a pain in the rear end to deal with (more than the usual badness of farming, that is)

Tonight I'll probably get around to adding a "Tips" section to the OP like the last thread had.

This is the most bland game I've played in years. It's like Minecraft beta in 2D. Just as arid. Which is a pity, because I love space settings. A lot.

I could rant about tons of things, like the boring, weak weapons, the fact that bosses that take ten minutes to kill give you a manipulator module, ten throwing spears, and a book, or the removal of all of the fun techs like butterfly/bubble, but there's no point. Because even YOU do not give a poo poo about your own game. At least this is a warning to most people not to buy your games again. Good riddance, no one needs to have any "hope" anymore.
