Middle-class blacks are also affected by voter ID and other voter repressing shenanigans, yes. I mean, he said 'college students' and 'young people'--why both. The insane level of resistance that a large slice of people who I thought were really progressive to the idea that racism needs to be mentioned alongside class problems is by far the most depressing thing to come out of this election. It is not something I previously was aware of, that the alt-right contempt for 'identity politics' had been adopted so wholesale by so many progressives.

I'll admit that I might be overly optimistic in what I'm about to say, but I feel like this "resistance" is spawned from how the issue is communicated. I think a lot of progressives, when they mention "the poor" in contexts such as that tweet, very much do have minorities in mind while opting to use a broad term. And while that might technically be all well and good, it is important that race struggles continue to be mentioned alongside class problems, lest we end up with overly broad policy that doesn't provide the targeted assistance those communities need so as to not fall behind yet again - as such, reminders of that are important. The problem arises when the reminders take the form of "Oh look, ____ doesn't care about black people." Which is something that is very much gonna set folks who mostly just need that healthy reminder on edge when, mentally, they didn't feel they were being exclusionary at all.

Which is something that is very much gonna set folks who mostly just need that healthy reminder on edge when, mentally, they didn't feel they were being exclusionary at all. I somewhat agree, except that it gets tiresome and tendentious when I try to explain how, for example, Sanders' free college plan would disproportionately benefit poor whites over poor blacks, and I get the same result as someone saying "X doesn't care about black people". There are also people who really do insist that class-based issues must come first, and a small but highly vocal minority who insist that racial problems are caused (not just exacerbated by) class issues. In fact, there hasn't been a single time, I'm afraid, where I've said something about how one policy or another is insufficiently taking race into account and had someone go "Oh, good point, thanks for the reminder". They either have responded "Well of course we'd take race into account, the fact that we just ignored it while talking about the subject is indicative of nothing" or by denying what I'm saying is true and refusing to listen to the explanation. I think that in a non-internet-argument format you're probably totally right though, it just gets distorted on here.

Geoff Peterson posted:https://twitter.com/SenSanders/status/757020250424631297 Here's how that tweet should have looked in order to please everyone: Voter ID laws are designed to suppress the vote. They mostly affect the elderly, college students, young people and the poor, blacks, hispanics, kenyan americans, jamaican americans, white woman, black woman, young woman, older woman, men missing the left arm, men missing the rigth arm, men missing a leg, men missing both legs, men who still have their legs but can't use them, people who masturbate using their left hand, people who masturbate using their right hand, people who don't masturbate, people who fucks, people who's libido is non existent, gays, lesbians, trans, black gays, black lesbians, gay hispanics, people unsure of their sexual identity, people in a coma, people who woke up from a coma but don't remember their names, people who can't spell, people with mental illness, rednecks, trisomics, recent immigrants, 2nd generation immigrants, people with blond hair, people with red hair, people with brown hair, people who are really brown haired but dyed their hair blond .... (keep going until you include everyone who has ever done anything) —not fraudsters. No matter what people do, there's always someone who's going to feel like "a group should have been included" and you just can't include everyone with 140 characters. Twitter sucks, and people who constantly nitpick at twitter posts rank barely above Justin Bieber when it comes to people who should be shot to make the world a better place.
