So is Zach Lowe actually autistic or is that just a running joke?

It's a joke because he is a massive about NBA minutiae and he clearly misses social cues sometimes when interviewing. But if you actually listen to him talk he's clearly just an awkward guy. Zach is notably thin skinned on Twitter even by sportswriter standards to the point that I have seen him get angry at people trying to praise him because he assumed they were sarcastic. He also engages waaaaay too much.

The entire staff from the excellent SBNation Iowa blog, Black Heart Gold Pants, announced that they're leaving and forming a new site. They're being nice about it but it seems pretty clear that SBNation did something to annoy them. It's one of the older SBNation sites and the two founding members were among the longest tenured writers for any blog in the network.

The original Auburn SB Nation site, Track 'Em Tigers, left around '11 or '12 and took the name with them, got replaced wholesale by College and Magnolia. I was never entirely clear who dumped who or why, but it seemed like there was a culture clash. Those guys were decidedly from an older generation of fans and a few months before the departure someone had written a post about Mo Isom trying out for LSU kicker that I never actually saw but was bad enough to quickly get pulled by somebody higher up. Doubt it was anything like that with BHGP, they always seemed cool if I found myself there. Don't people say for as well-regarded as they are SB Nation really isn't any more equitable financially that any other #content farm?

I stood next to him on the subway once and before I realized who he was I was looking at his phone over his shoulder (because I'm nosey and it's the subway) and he was getting bitched out by his wife/girlfriend for leaving the apartment messy. Like 4 or 5 straight texts with pictures and everything. Owned scrub. Autistic? Probably not.

Back in the day getting paid at all probably felt like a victory. If they've got name recognition I assume they'd do better financially on their own, but leaving that safety net would have to be tough.

https://twitter.com/darrenrovell/status/758073471775670273 Rovell vehemently argues against paying college athletes, but at least he's looking out for their really important rights, like the ability to tweet during the season. Also there is no way he follows a random Iowa beat writer so I chose to believe he searches for the word "Twitter" just to find people trashing it and defend the virtue of the company.

I feel like SBNation is now a good place to start and get recognition but not a place to stay at long term. A guy who wrote for the Bulls blog recently left to take a job with The Athletic. Just seems like with how easy it is to setup your own sites (so many Wordpress tools out there), SBNation doesn't offer the benefits that it used to. If you've built up 5-figures worth of followers on Twitter and some loyal readers, it's time to bolt and have control over your content.

Does SBNation still have that insane content minimum? I remember a soccer blog I followed leaving them because they wanted a a minimum of 8 articles a day

I very briefly wrote for some of the city sites they used to have and they had a recommended pace I couldn't keep up with, like 8-10 stories in a four-hour shift.

How does Any Given Wednesday get even worse, it seems impossible. Even as somebody who still usually enjoys Simmons' podcast, I can safely say I'd rather watch an hour of Arliss than 30 minutes of Simmons' show.

The best thing about Lowe is that his podcasts get into actual subject matter within maybe thirty seconds. It's bizarre that, e.g., Jonah Keri or Will Leitch have nearly ten minutes of "housekeeping" bullshit before starting the actual podcast. Not even self-promotional stuff. Like, three minutes on podcast scheduling issues.

He's actually a really bad interviewer though, which weirdly is his strongest appeal. Whoever Bill Simmons interviews, the interview is really about how they relate to Bill Simmons, and where they stand in Bill Simmons' pantheon of humanity. The compelling part of some of his podcasts is throwing him in a room with Lorne Michaels, or Louis CK, or Lena Dunham, the further outside his usual world the better, and see how they react to this cartoon of a human being. It feels most like one of those Between Two Ferns interviews, or any SNL talk show skit. The problem with the TV format is that he's a bit more restrained, and the interviews are too short to get weird.

And then there was a fire that they only noticed because of smoke. And then after they returned from evacuating, found that some of their clothes and laptops had been stolen. (Matt Moore's Hardwood Paroxysm Twitter account is a great source of "conditions at these Olympics are so bad" stories)

And that swimmers were told to not open their mouths when in the water. The same water that made boaters nauseous and vomit after a short time.

Also the Jamaican track team has been put up in lodgings that they didn't know were across the street from a favela, so they're spending every night listening to multiple hours of gunshots and sirens and wondering if a stray bullet is going to shred all of the ligaments in Usain Bolt's knees. Also the Greek accommodations have had multiple gas leaks. Also the security firm hired to screen visitors for weapons at all of the venues was fired because they didn't hire enough people. That job is now up to police, the same police force that kidnapped a New Zealand Ju-jitsu competitor and then returned to his apartment each of the next two nights after his girlfriend filed an official complaint with the government, which had to be routed through New Zealand's embassy because otherwise they apparently wouldn't have given a poo poo about the cops up and kidnapping a guy and his girlfriend and forcing them to withdraw money from ATM's.

Also, the multi-billion-dollar subway line through Rio that was supposed to be completed last year was finished yesterday, five days before the Olympics. Railway specialists filed suit in order to delay the opening so safety testing and inspections could be done. Instead, the judge deemed the line safe to open as long as the government provides "more information".
