Dog Jones posted:

But there's also people who are Sanders supporters here, and see it as correct to vote for Hillary, because of reasons of strategy, or whatever. And even some of them seem willing to gleefully crush dissenting opinions, and to try and humiliate people for being skeptical of the Hillary endorsement. And now these are the conversations we're having, about strategic compromise and voting for Clinton, because of this decision to endorse her. I think this sort of thing will poison peoples minds and misdirect their energy and spoil the momentum of Sanders' movement. And I think this national conversation that Sanders created by compromising, which is really a conversation powerful people in back rooms are having (and down to the last minute democratic party main streamers fought hard to keep Sanders people out), I'm not sure if that will buy us anything.

The lesson I think we can draw from Bernie's endorsement is that, on the level you and I are talking about, Bernie's place in the presidential race hasn't mattered since early June. We lost that one a while ago--although I'll take the concessions Clinton has made since, however dubious, as a slight consolation prize. To me, the focus on that front has to shift to state and local elections, and direct issue advocacy. For the record, I think Bernie's decision to endorse was the correct one, and come November I'm going to vote for Hillary. Sometimes, in context, the best move to support progressive causes is just mitigating the damage done to them. I think The Trump Candidacy is a legitimate threat, and in the absence of a viable alternative, and putting aside any accelerationist arguments, having all hands on deck to prevent it isn't a bad thing by a long shot. Bernie Sanders doesn't particularly matter to me, except as a vehicle for raising awareness of progressive and leftist politics, and I care less about preserving his reputation than I do about stopping Trump. I don't really think there's much of a trade-off to be made there, and, unless you think Trump is better than or equal to Clinton, I suspect our only other disagreement is really just a matter of perspective: You're thinking of the Bernie voters that are going to tune out after the endorsement, and I'm thinking of the voters he's already keyed in to socialist politics that never would've been otherwise.

That's a separate issue from Democrats who pulled on their cleats to stomp ~Bernies Bros~ while they're down. That's pretty weak poo poo.

joepinetree posted:

Hmm, yes. Progressives are equally hosed if we elect a centrist democrat who doesn't change much or if we elect a literal white nationalist whose campaign cornerstone is the destruction of the lives of a few million people.

Sure, the literal white nationalist is way worse. On the other hand, I think you're understating how bad "a centrist democrat who doesn't change much" really is. Things are getting worse, and business as usual is, sooner rather than later, going to start having truly catastrophic effects. #NeverTrump, but let's not forget that the reason he's captured the support he has is in no small part because centrist Democrats have failed to create a compelling alternative over the past few decades.

No but this night loving owned hard. God the worst you can say is some of it was "badly delivered" but there was nothing like the RNC shitshow of that Pyramis Scheme lady with a hateboner for Common Core.

Also I got to enjoy 8-bit's tears as he takes his first steps into politics! They grow up so fast~ :unsmith:
Hey 8-bit! You realize Gary Johnson's brand of libertarianism is literally what Andrew Ryan from Bioshock used as his core philosophy, right? The developers specifically used Rapture to lampoon that philosophy. Remember how that all ended up for the guy? He ended up having all his subjects turned against him by a conman and ends up all alone. He then instructs you to kill him, which you abide. That was to show that he understood the folly of his philosophy, but chose to follow it to the bitter end, hence the irony of "A man chooses, a slave obeys"
Would you kindly take a good hard look at your decision, just one more time, to make sure it's the right choice?

Man, the narrative coming out of this seems to be a 'protester disrupted shitshow' with incredible speeches by Booker, Michelle and Sanders. How the holy christ is that possible? Like, how? From what I saw and heard it was almost as solid as a convention opener could be, especially compared to that RNC garbage for four days last week.

I imagine people who think that watched everything up to Michelle and then turned off the TV and went to bed, because man, the last few speakers were a full-on GOP massacre. Like, the kind of speeches the GOP absolutely dreads because nothing they can say can even come close to rebutting a single sentence with any kind of credibility.

Regardless, tonight is going to be spectacular. I don't know what I'm more looking forward to -- the big guns and what they have to say or the Republican impotent molten salt core afterwards. Never thought I'd say this, but I can't wait to hear politicians speak.

Well it's nice to come in here and see all the...positivity? And optimism? The way that a lot of other sites are painting it, it seems like the biggest obstacle going forward will be the stubborn unreasoning Bernie militants and it doesn't seem like they're going to stop being stubborn or unreasoning or militant any time soon. I feel like this is gonna be a big talking point from here on out and, I mean, hopefully that just energizes the Clinton campaign even more?

They also appeared to be moving around, presumably to find live mics and avoid anyone trying to manage or corral them.

I'm also curious, if they were calling Warren Pocahontas during her speech -- the only people I've ever heard doing that are in the tank Trump supporters. Considering how universally rude they were being to all speakers, I'm really hoping they get their credentials yanked. The whole loving night they were tremendously lovely and if they can't grow up they should probably just be sat out for the rest of the convention.

Because the Democratic party are demonstrably corrupt, they spend an entire night lying to you, and that your takeaway from it were "these speeches were incredible!" While Sarah Silverman literally laughed in the face of the Bernie Sanders supporters and Sanders conceded to the very enemy he had campaigned so effectively against in the primaries.
