Presumably it's up to the RNC whether they fill it by vote (I.e. reconvening an emergency session :laffo:) or by committee decision. No matter who they pick, a bunch of trumpites will feel left out and throw a fit.

I suspect the terrible vocabulary is a deeply ingrained habit of training himself to speak badly. He probably learned early on that it's easy to con rubes if you sound dumber than them.

Think that episode of South Park where Cartman gives himself Tourettes Syndrome.

Also, I seriously thought the "Mexican" judge fiasco would be the last tailspin, especially since he semi-fired Lewandowski. He might have been a master manipulator, but he's too emotional now. To be fair, his core followers are voting for a personality more than anything, so maybe he would lose their support if he stopped being a whiny baby who hates to apologize.

I'm really interested in seeing how the Olympics will be interpreted through the American political lens, if it's even half the clusterfuck it's shaping up to be.

Seeing people literally swimming through raw sewage and contracting diseases is a powerful argument for the need for competent government and infrastructure investment. But street gangs wantonly mugging people and maybe even murdering them, potentially all caught live on camera, is the type of thing that could benefit a xenophobic strong man candidate.

NBC will be running those positive stories. Everyone else will gladly run the stories about it being a huge shitshow, because they don't get any benefit from the Olympics. In fact, showing what a disaster it is is pretty much the only way that they can legally get the Olympic rings on TV and even use the name "Olympics".

Personally I'm hoping he hammers it so hard that his next random-noise poll rise makes a bunch of GOP legislative entities decide to join him in insulting our troops, just to see if he can also mutilate the GOP connection to the military industrial complex. (And, you know, it wouldn't hurt if the military has less of a reflexively Republican element, in case of future Nixons.)

But if I want to make some covert refrences to Italians those foodstuffs would accomplish that, and why would I need to be covert about it unless I was being insulting. Dog whistle stuff must have plausible deniability and one way to get that is to take something innocuous or even positive that's specific to a group/culture and turn it into a stereotype of them that you can then deride or condescend about when you can't explicitly call those people poo poo.

You would think, but almost half of America will instead interpret it as "See? Government can't do anything right!" We might get a line or two of "In Brazil they have big government. You can see how the Olympics turned out to see how big government turns out. Hillary Clinton wants big government. Bad!"

It'll likely be spit down the middle as always:

People who pay attention to the situation will see that Brazil's government is corrupt and failing in important ways, more democrat leaning sources will state that they need real regulation while the right wingers will try to turn it into support for their xenophobia, racism, and "government can't do anything right (please give us full control of the government)" narrative.

I fully expect it all to fade away from the public eye fairly quickly just like Sochi's incredibly rampant corruption unless a very large percentage of the athletes come home with chronic disease or stab wounds.

Like the fact that the firefighter trump smeared was civilian of the year a couple of years ago for his response during a mass casualty event (and the fact that the elevator failed due to mechanical interference from Trump's own security detail) or the transcript pertaining to the answers he gave to the question of Crimea (seriously read it, it's a thing of beauty) actually copies, word for word, the responses he gave when he was confronted with the same question in an interview several months ago.

Like, everything that happens is uniquely bad but each thing is also a thread that you can pull at to reveal even more poo poo. Every single crisis seems specifically engineered to be as depraved and damaging as possible. This election is amazing...

What Trump could do for the debates is pull a Mike gravel. Pull out of the debate(Gravel was simply forced out due to low numbers) and live broadcast a counter event(Gravel has to use YouTube after the fact but Trump could afford to buy airtime) and watch the live Hillary interview, pausing and "rebutting" after every answer and make accusations free of moderator review or rebuttal.
