USPOL July

What a crazy month July was! Between various shootings and political conventions on this side of the Atlantic and a whirlwind of coups, terrorist attacks, and leadership transitions on the other, you could hardly be faulted for wanting to take a breather for a while (hell, everything in this post is just the tip of the iceberg when it came to news this month, and I probably forgot a lot). But you can be sure that August only promises to be even crazier, so you might as well sit down and settle in for USPOL August 2016!

114th Congress Bingo Card

Congress was in session for 8 days this month, and will be off all of August (by law!), so there’s not much to say on this end…

Other News

With the news focusing so strongly on the presidential and other election races over the next few months, I’ve pulled some of this out to highlight separately from the rest of the news.

The Never Forgiving Your Friends and Family for Supporting Trump FAQ

Q: Should I forgive them when Hillary wins?

A: No. They must know isolation and misery unto death, or this will keep happening because it's "just politics."

Q: But they babysit my kids!

A: They'll turn your kids evil.

Q: But they paid for my college!

A: I don't care

Q: But Thanksgiving will be really awkward!

A: You know what's awkward? Getting murdered by obese paramilitaries, whom your Trump-worshiping friends and family are in love with.

i really can't read these threads that effectively anymore due to the sheer volume, but sometimes i do catch an occasional page with some comedy gold on it and that makes me happy

us politics has never been better but i feel like we might be building up a resistance to insane conservative politicians, to get the same high in 2020 we're going to need some real awesome candidates, like maybe a for-real white nationalist with a big swastika on his forehead, running against sarah palin after she's been possessed by the ghost of mussolini, and herman cain will show up again because he's pretty cool

Haha, no. We're just entering election season.

This thread is only going to accelerate as more posters get interested in politics throughout the late summer and fall. Plus, new posters brings new trolls, and each new troll causes at least a five page derail. And if two thread regulars can rehash an argument once a week, you should see two fresh-faced "woah politics, huh?" posters go at that same argument as if it's never been had before. And then see those people gradually become more than half the thread's population.

We won't have sub-1000-post days until December.

Well, in the same 48 hour period Trump got trapped in an elevator and then proceeded to verbally attack the firefighter who rescued him in a speech at a rally 30 minutes later, nude pictures of his wife were leaked to the New York Post who subsequently published them on their front page and it's very possible that Trump's office either leaked them or approved of their printing, Trump has been engaged in a very public and damaging feud with the father of a Gold Star winning veteran who was killed in Iraq, Trump has been complaining about the debate schedule with seems to be a prelude to him backing out and has possibly been caught lying about whether the NFL contacted him to complain about the dates of the presidential debates, and gave an interview that strongly suggested he doesn't actually know what's happening in Crimea with respect to the Russian invasion of the Ukraine.

If you knew all of these things happened then I imagine you're pretty caught up with the events of the weekend

I feel like someone needs to keep to keep a running list of all the various gently caress-up that would sink a candidate had they occurred in any other election year and the republican electorate were still sane. Assuming he continues at the rate of 5 per every 2 days, he'll generate another 230 before the election. Historians will want to know what he did on his path to becoming emperor Trump.

The main thing that finally sunk in for me this last week or so is that Trump's supporters will be his supporters until the day they die and absolutely nothing can change that, but that that doesn't matter since neither are they numerous enough or in the right positions to win the election. They can be completely ignored and cut out of the equation entirely.

The only question is whether his antics will earn him any new supporters and the answer is no.

Listing things in some sort of chronological order like this has so much more impact than watching each train wreck one at a time. because, among those different stories that occurred in just 2 days there's so much more nuance and detail to be explored. Like the fact that the firefighter trump smeared was civilian of the year a couple of years ago for his response during a mass casualty event (and the fact that the elevator failed due to mechanical interference from Trump's own security detail) or the transcript pertaining to the answers he gave to the question of Crimea (seriously read it, it's a thing of beauty) actually copies, word for word, the responses he gave when he was confronted with the same question in an interview several months ago.

Like, everything that happens is uniquely bad but each thing is also a thread that you can pull at to reveal even more poo poo. Every single crisis seems specifically engineered to be as depraved and damaging as possible. This election is amazing...

Your brain just sort of shuts down about 20 deep into it, and you no longer get an emotional response from anything else on the list. It's sort of like how severe frostbite is described. At a certain point, the nerves die and the brain realizes it is no longer beneficial to send pain signals. All that's left to look forward to is that last burst of adrenalin and endorphins, but it's probably not coming until late October.
