Pilsner Urquell poured in the underground cellar out of the wood barrel is one of those truly memorable moments for any beer fan and that was a huge highlight of visiting the Czech Republic. The canned stuff is solid even if it's pasteurized and it's pretty easily found too. But yeah, generally Czech pilsners are in top form when served at a tankovna. My favorite pub was U Sadu because of the Sadek exclusively poured there.

U Pinkasu is my usual (and the aforementioned first Urquel source), but I'll have to get over to Žižkov to try U Sadu if I get to Prague again. U Fleku is too loving touristy but I still go there when I can because their proprietary beer is one of the best in the world. In the States, the only brewery doing Czech-level pils is Noble Brewing in Anaheim. Their Czech blonde and dark are both excruciatingly close to the originals.

I was pretty frustrated with U Fleku; I liked the beer, but constantly getting pestered to buy shots got real annoying. I dig FW Pivo but I've also been crushing a ton of Saint Arnold 5 o clock pils. Falls the gently caress off past 6 weeks of canning date unfortunately.

I was watching the waiters trick a horde of German students into shots while downing about 4 pints of that dark lager and eating things that would give me heartburn for days. I mean, it is a horrible monstrosity but both the food and beer are good. My bar of choice is u Zlateho Tygra though. So uninviting and dour, plus you have to be there early if you want to have any hope of getting in. My kind of place. See I thought that Pivo Pils from Firestone Walker hit that hoppy note of a fresh pilsner for me. We got a small amount in the UK and it was super fresh and tasty.

Do you like cask beer? Do you like drinking really weird one-offs that may never again see the light of day? Good, then you should come to Cask Days, it's a cask beer festival in Toronto that's held every year in late October. This year there's going to be 400 beers, nothing specific announced yet, same as every year, you only really know who's going to be there a month in advance, and exactly what's going to be on about a week in advance. In the 5 years I've gone, I've never been disappointed with the selection. This isn't just english cask ales, there's things that are all over the board. Brett porter, 16-way IPA showdown, dry hopped sours, brown ale with beef stock, you name it, that style is probably there in some capacity. Tickets go on sale today: http://festival.caskdays.com/tickets and this year the even is October 21st to 23rd. You should all go, it's a great time and a nice way to spend the night. Just dress warm.

It's in that area of Prague I always get lost in, and I'm not there nearly often enough to get better at navigating. It seemed nice in that particularly Bohemian working-class way (which I also love), but was packed full with people waiting so I had to move on. Pivo is a very good beer, but doesn't quite scratch the Czech pils itch for me. And I've had it fresh; the Vegas FW rep is very good about rotating stock.

Bear in mind that I tried it in the UK, where given shipping it was definitely a minimum of 4 weeks old. But it did die a rapid hop-death. Then again we can get Tipopils on occasion too so that does nicely.

All the Pilsner Urquell posts inspired me to snag a few cans today. I had only had the bottled stuff previously, and the cans are so much better it's almost like drinking a different beer. There are a lot of bad pilsners made by BC brewers, but I really like Driftwood's Pilsner Doehnel and Persephone's Keller Pilsner.
