I do not see how that confirms your statement? I'm VERY against taking pills for the entirety of your lifetime if it's possible to avoid, taking them for a certain (yet undetermined) amount of time to help manage your problem? Yes, you should if it's that bad, but if it's possible you should fix the root cause and hopefully get away from popping expensive medication for 50 years. You found (likely through a lot of loving hardship) that you NEED MEDICATION TO MANAGE IT, I am NOT against this. What I AM against is loading people up with anti-depression meds and poo poo like that and then never telling them to go see a therapist, some people have lifelong depression due to imbalances in their brains, some people just have unresolved trauma that can be helped.

Let's not post about brain janitors anymore! I think it is important to understand the difference and kind of interesting, but we have gone well beyond the point where anyone wants to read about it in this thread. On-topic: poo poo NOT pissing me off: Picked up an escalated ticket for a reporting issue, basically customer is getting billed for services at site IDs that don't belong to them. After a shitton of investigation, find that they are sending site IDs in their transactions that don't belong to them (this is valid, they could be sub-billing). I wrote this all up and expected a bunch of pushback and demands for credit, but instead today they just replied with "Wow thanks, we've been trying to figure this out for weeks!"

On the topic of troubleshooting feelings: "Someone deleted THE *.indd file somewhere." I wrote back asking for details like when it happened, what program they used to create the file (I know it's InDesign), if they've checked the deleted files... and haven't got a reply in over a day. He also wrote "It should have the same name", with literally no more info inbetween. Sorry pal, can't look for that one specific *.indd file with that one name that was somewhere maybe on one of the shares or maybe somewhere else.

As of tomorrow I got on 2 weeks leave. Of course there is no handover procedure as my manager is taking over my role in my absence and he is still on his holiday overseas. If it's anything like the past few weeks while he was away - the fires will still be burning. Unfortunately I will have to run the gauntlet twice because I have personal purchases being delivered and I cannot get the delivery address changed.

Gah, why can't whiny man-children just gently caress off. This one guy is complaining his phone isn't picking up calendar items, every phone I send out is pre-configured and works off the bat with no intervention needed. I send over menu instructions to check his exchange account settings and he says the "Download new content" options aren't there, I specifically used the same model phone to check the routine for this and it's not difficult to follow; plus it's not like there's much to configure beyond how often you want stuff synced. Compared to everyone else who have some semblance of manners this guy is an abrasive rear end in a top hat who always likes to flaunt he used to own his own telecoms company and everything we do is poo poo, get with the loving program and stop being so salty that we don't use iPhones anymore. EDIT: Actually no this is worse Holy poo poo our finance manager really is the cheapest cheapskate there ever loving was, she won't approve a printer purchase because apparently Amazon sells it cheaper by £20, never mind the fact our broker can get it for a really good price and that the amazon listing is literally more expensive than my quote made obvious with me screenshotting them. Fresh from the madhouse - after telling this person that an app was listening on 8084 and they were wondering why port 8080 didn't work: : I told you earlier that port 8080 wasn't working and asked you to decide how you wanted to do this going forward. 8084 doesn't work, and will never work : Please pay attention to what I tell you : @Woogles…Thank you for letting me know that I need to pay more attention….from what you told me earlier I understood that right now 8084 was working but you wanted us to have a discussion on how to manage it better : "All the apps are listening on 8084 but the forwarded port goes to 8080. We’re going to need to think how we set these ports on different systems going forward" : I never said it would work as-is. : I also said I could modify the properties settings at build time in the CI job then asked everyone collectively to decide how we'd handle it going forward : @PM..please have that conversation with @Woogles and let me know how to proceed : Errrr : Aren't you the technical architect here? : @Woogles... I am the TA…but I don’t like to have a conversation like this please : Ok, fair enough ..... :@PM…we should sort out rude behaviours here…for us to have a conversation please I don't really give a gently caress. This person is allegedly a technical architect. If they don't know what the hell they're doing or how basic things work (they were installing stuff from source in a Bamboo job instead of using a package manager, and for no good reason!) then I'm going to call them on it. Very publicly. Like when I told the head of Managed Services, in front of several people, that his plan to absorb IT was incredibly stupid and doomed to fail. I've been proven right; their department's a goddamned mess and their "senior" engineers don't even know what the sed command is. Sigh.

Customer calls me last night saying their internet is down and one of their workstations isn't working. They rebooted the modem, blah blah blah, etc. Fine, I schedule a trip for the morning, Arrive at the site around 10 AM and find that the DSL modem has been changed out and all the devices are plugged in to it rather than the site's usual router. Apparently the fact that AT&T was here and replaced equipment immediately before everything stopped working wasn't worth mentioning. I reconnect everything to the correct devices and the internal app at least comes up working, but no internet still. We're set up for a bridged modem where our router is handling PPPoE. Turns out that the AT&T NVG589 doesn't support bridge mode at all. Great... Call AT&T tech that was on site, no answer. Call his manager and get a promise to have a new modem out in 20 minutes. 45 minutes later, manager arrives with a NVG510 which runs the exact same software and thus has the same problem. It's now 11:45 AM and I'm still sitting here browsing forums waiting for the manager to return with a third modem, which he's not entirely convinced will support bridge mode either. loving hell AT&T, how hard is it to have a modem that's JUST A MOTHERFUCKING MODEM AND NOTHING ELSE?

I know I am going to face this at every job for the rest of my life, but I can still hate it. It just ruins my mood when people run into something they don't understand, do absolutely no research, send an email to a group of people about it, and wash their hands of it. Bullshit, get back here, I'm going to watch you as you dig in and find this thing. I've got a million examples and so does everyone else, but someone from our operations team sent my team an email saying hey can you send me X log because he can't find it. 1) No., 2) With 5 minutes of research, using little more than timestamps and email history, I was able to determine that that log doesn't exist in this version of code so of course you can't find it. I did this a curiosity because I was wondered what could be so hard about opening a text file. But this is way, way too much work for most people. It's far easier to just be like "yeah I opened the folder and the file wasn't there, so I emailed a bunch of people, I feel like I put in a good day today". Just, ugh.

I'm the exact opposite, I'll be completely silent while I spend way too much time trying to figure out a problem to try and avoid sounding like an ignorant doofus when I do speak up. I wanna exhaust every last option before I give up (because typically I discover the solution exactly 5 seconds after I hit submit). Being in the middle somewhere is probably better, but eh, humans gonna human.

I was talking to my manager today, and he said that after the 1st of the year, when promotions are no longer frozen, he wants to promote me to team lead of a new team being formed under him. Which would be kind of interesting, it is a 2 position bump and the person I know who has that job title and hasn't been here too much longer than me makes almost twice what I make(and unlike team leads at most places he still gets to spend a good amount of time actually doing stuff, not spending all his time in meetings and managing). However, considering how badly I just got burned by the department head, I honestly can't really get much enthusiasm because I honestly have no idea if it will just be denied by said department head, just like the raise I was supposed to get this month. The whole "approve raise, wait until it gets to final approval from CEO stage, and then withdraw approval" stunt the head of IT pulled has pretty much stripped away all the good will and cautious optimism I had started to get about this company.

It's one of those days where everything sucks. Nothing is specifically broken, but I'm working on some shortcut changes in group policy and group policy isn't exactly designed to do what we're trying to, I'm replacing an html shortcut with an .exe (don't ask), so you'd think I just switch the html to delete and add a new shortcut for the .exe right? TOO loving EASY BITCHES. The html shortcut has permissions that need carried over, the .exe runs a script that will carry those permissions, but it obviously needs run once first for that to happen. We have other dependencies such that I can't change the name of the shortcut, so both will have the same name and other stuff ughhh I'm sick of thinking about this and I want to put my fist through something right now. Time to go for a walk. *edit* it's not that GP isn't designed to do what we're trying to, it is, but to the extent that I need stuff to work out and the dependencies etc, at least from what I've been trying so far, GP isn't exactly made to deal with it. Today I asked a off-site contractor if he had anything to commit now that git is finally back up and running so I can start integrating our software into our build system. him: "Nah" me: "Are... are you sure? The last commit was over a week ago. Surely you have something that hasn't been committed correct ?" him: "I'll be doing a commit tonight" me: "Should I start working on the other part of our software then ?" him: "Naw, I've made some changes there too." me: "I'm getting concerned; non-consistent commits make it difficult for me to manage our builds, also no updates in Asana or via email or SMS or any other form of communication." " Dude, why are you hamming me now?" "Uh, what? How is me expressing concern over you not actually doing any work for over 9 days 'Hammering you'?" "I really need my mental state to be clear right now!" What the gently caress is going on here? This guy took most of July off, he's supposed to help with board bring-up in 2 weeks, and his portion of the software is like... 5% done. I feel like I am stuck in-between a rock and a hard place here. His bus factor is really high, but he is going to royally gently caress me over as well.

poo poo pissing me off: people calling for support and somehow being midway through a conversation about who the gently caress knows what when I answer their phone call. I don't even understand how this happens - our queue is almost never backed up, and most of our support lines don't even have any goofy IVR for them to jump through. Do they really get that bored in the time between it takes them to dial and me to answer that they absolutely NEED some human interaction to keep themselves sane? I feel like I've had this on about every single call this week. I used to wait for them to finish doing whatever they're doing, but now I just gleefully barrel on through with my "Thanks for calling blahblahblah, how can I help you?" schpiel or else they'll keep talking about their lawns or their coworkers or their lunch forever. On the plus side, this did lead to getting to overhear one lady yell "VERONICA, PUT THEM TITTIES AWAY AND STEP AWAY FROM THAT COUNTER". Which is a particularly odd thing to hear, considering we mostly support government offices, instead of plastic surgeons or strip joints.
