Bullshit. There's plenty of Japanese media where Samus is a tank and has an actual cool personality. Sakamoto was the only person who was wrong about Samus.

Other M was bad. You know how you have those best game idea fantasties of "oh man what if such and such company was behind this game it would be awesome?"

Other M was almost that, and then it dropped the ball. I mean goddamn Team Ninja made Samus such a bad rear end (even though there were some mechanics I didn't like)

and then the Story decided, no Adam is the best. Guys why aren't you liking Adam? Please like Adam as he takes away what would've been a badass level.

gently caress Other M.

The mechanics of Other M were worse than the story

Other M was bad but this comic is funnier in hindsight

Other M's announcement was pretty much the only positive thing people had to say about that conference iirc

The Star Fox comic in Nintendo Power was seriously rad because it was basically Moebius as filtered through kid-friendly Japanese talking animals made even weirder by the source material's graphics.

I wish they had included someone from the fire kingdom as a playable character. I think they're the only major group that doesn't have a playable representative and that always stood out to me.

The pitch for OG quake from 1990 is amazing because 25 years later people are still making the same promises it made:

quote:

COMING SOON FROM ID SOFTWARE

As our follow-up to the Commander Keen trilogy, id Software is working on 'The Fight for Justice', a completely new approach to fantasy gaming. You start not as a weakling with no food--you start as Quake, the strongest, most dangerous person on the continent. You start off with a Hammer of Thunderbolts, a Ring of Regeneration, and a trans-dimensional artifact. Here the fun begins. You fight for Justice, a secret organization devoted to vanquishing evil from the land! This is role-playing excitement.

And you don't chunk around the screen. 'The Fight for Justice' contains fully animated scrolling backgrounds. All the people you meet have their own lives, personalities, and objectives. A 256-color VGA version will be available (smooth scrolling 256-color screens --fancy that)!

And the depth of play will be intense. No more "whack whack here's some gold." There will be interesting puzzles and decisions won't be "yes/no" but complex correlations of people and events. 'The Fight for Justice' will be the finest PC game yet.

Unless that was just a joke on the name I don't think I've been exposed to vanillaware games before, so I didn't know what I was getting into

Kinda makes me wonder though. Games like FFXIV and Monster Hunter are repetitive and grindy as all get out too and I get sucked into those like crazy (especially Monster Hunter holy poo poo I must have 80+ hours on Generations by now and it's been out like two and a half weeks), whereas Leifthrasir is repetitive and I'm just getting more :geno: on it as time goes on. Wonder what the difference is; maybe the reward cycle just isn't psychologically as good in the latter and I'm just a sucker for Skinner boxes

Doesn't bode especially well for me starting Trails of Cold Steel tonight instead, I guess!!!

Vanillaware's whole steez has been amazing 2d animation with grindy as gently caress gameplay, at least until Dragon's Crown when they didn't even have the animation going for them since they traded it in for a bunch of squashes and stretches of still images in the name of preserving the detail of their headache-inducing art style.

So I guess it'd be fair to say (completely sight unseen except for screenshots, here) that Dragon's Crown is more or less the same gameplay as Leifthrasir only with less story and more boobs? Save me a few bucks if so

its a joke but its also true that vanillaware is entirely focused on simple gameplay with constantly reused levels/enemies while they pursue their true passion of outstanding visual design. a lot of their games are 1 attack button brawlers that play very close to OS.

i own all of them because the polish is outstanding but i'll be dissappointed if their new mech game doesn't deviate a bit. DC tried to give the player more to do with its structure and loot focus but i actually like it the least of their games due to my eyes not being able to tell wtf is happening on screen when you have a full party.

eh as long as the food porn looks delicious i'm sure i'll like it anyway.

DC has a story. there's a hub world where you get missions and then you go to dungeons to do them. if you love OS its worth it, but its basically OS with a party system, weapon/armor drops, etc added on top so you might as well wait for a sale. it comes around pretty regularly on psn.

track down muramasa rebirth then and put DC on the backburner for now. the foodporn is cranked up to 11 with a traditional japanese cuisine focus that had me dying for ramen. you have to tap buttons to eat and each tap makes the food shrink as you eat it and the camera is zoomed on the food.

gonna go make a snack now
