Prost got blown out of Renault for blaming the team for losing the championship in '83, he said they were too conservative developing the car. I think he also made a comment that he'd sooner have Piquet champion than let Arnoux win the championship which made the already tense situation in that team worse.

The fallout from Prost's 1983 campaign was pretty extreme. Plus, the French really loved Arnoux at the time. The Renault factory workers were pretty insane at the time; they basically ran Prost out of France and then during privatization I think they were involved by the gunning down of some executive. He was probably right that the RE40 suffered from lack of development; it was better than the BT52 at the beginning of the year.

I seem to remember the Renault turbo engine grenading spectacularly (particularly for Rene) an awful lot.

The Renault crew took an eternity compared to Brabham and Ferrari. Prost can bitch about development but that car was clearly the better of the three in the first half of the season and he needed to just be taking home reliable points at that stage as opposed to outright wins.
