GENCON!

This was an awesome year, as usual. I ended up doing more couplesy things and cosplayed a fair bit too. I spent a lot of time showing two con newbies around so didn't get quite as much game in as I would have like, but the quality of games this year was way higher than last.

Started off by doing that Build a Foam Weapon class, then consignment store/auction where I picked up Rex for $20, which is probably the steal of the con. Did vendor hall then played a Part Time Gods game about cats and poo poo. P sweet. Skipped out on the second game to do dinner then jumped into an Indie Games On Demand thing that was a trainwreck. It was a game called Hot Guys Making Out and ended up basically being a pedophile weeabo yaoi simulator? I thought it'd be some doofy Monster Hearts esque fun but if the first thing you have to do is agree around the table that the characters you're playing are 10~ years older than the game says they are, probably work on that.

Friday I walked around as War Boy all day and that was fantastic fun. The last year I did a crappy Dresden Files costume but this was way higher effort, and I had a Max and Furiosa in tow too. Kicked things off with a brilliant Eclipse Phase Fate game, run by one of their GMs. I spent half the game insulting EP which was a bit of a faux pax but the GM was nice enough to look past me being an asshat and ran an awesome gatecrashing game. Probably one of the best games of the con tbh. Directly following that was MAD GAMMA FURY WORLD; my gamma world game. Luckily everyone involved was a huge fan of the game and got super into the whole thing and we all had a blast. One guy turned himself into a boneless mass and fell out of a giant monster shark-frogs mouth. One guy invented a new rule where when bloodied, so long as you can be witnessed, you accomplish one task before Death. I had to skip my Esoterrorists game (boo) to go watch and support my friend at the crossplay event, which was rad, there were some really fun costumes, though I don't know how a relatively basic and middling effort steam punk doctor who can win in tyool 2016 but there you go. Met up with goons after dinner for the yearly game of Fiasco!

Easily one of my highlights, and big shout out to EgoTrip for organizing the contagion of goons this year. This years Fiasco game was a bunch of Las Vegas criminals and casino/daycare center owners trying to off each other, with me playing a corrupt government official who really wanted to screw his adopted sister. Kids Died, Egotrip Cried. Mods Knew.

Saturday was my downtime, or at least was supposed to, I was Saitama/One Punch Man all day and ended up doing the costume parade, spent an hour or two in the vendor hall. I was supposed to do a Design a Game in an Hour workshop but whoever was running it just dipped out so. I was really hyped for the Xcrawl sounding game I was in the late evening but it turned out to be some dumbass game ad for some Roll20 thing. How do you gently caress up a charity Xcrawl?

Then the Goon Gamma World Game happened. I'll let someone else tell the tale of that. I think we had what? 12? people show up for it? It was amazing.

Sunday was a quiet day as usual, got one more round of Haveli in before headed out. The food this year was excellent, thanks guys for all your recommendations, Toppers, H&Is, Haveli, Old Point Tavern. Unf.

Great GenCon, here's some pics. I can't wait for next year.

I'm really not a board gamer at all but I went this year because a bunch of my buddies are and it's a short drive for me. I had a really good time. Enjoyed walking the Expo Hall and seeing all the different games out there. Demo'd some cool stuff. Watched some tournament play and tested some games. And spent all night almost every night having a blast playing Secret Hitler.

Didn't think it would be my crowd but I really enjoyed myself.

I went in with a pretty sparse wishlist, but found a lot of great deals (both Battlecon sets there for ~$40 total in a ding and dent deal) and some new unexpected gems like Masmorra and Evolution. Vast didn't have a ton of buzz the first day, but by Friday everyone wanted in and I came back Sunday and they were completely sold out after things having moved pretty slowly at the start. Interesting how that worked out.

Nada was probably the best food I had at the con, though the hotel bar at the Hyatt Regency was actually pretty good. The Level99 team took everyone for dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory which was decent but pretty heavy and a crapton of food. For future reference, and for those not in the know, Bluebeard is in the Fountain Square area, which has a ton of great food and drink, including Kuma's (heavy metal burger bar, great beer), the brass ring (cocktails), New Day Meadery, and Fountain Square Brewery, to name a few. This was mostly a Level 99 con for me this year, between playing Millennium Blades the first night, a full run of tournaments, practicing against other players in Exceed and BattleCON and finishing with Noir just before I left. I at least got in some demos to vary my diet on Sunday. I sold off about $350+ in old World of Darkness and Dream Pod 9 books, old CCGs, Yomi, and some miscellaneous games like Sorcerer. I ended up seeing a few seminars, including the State of the Hat seminar for Evil Hat, which was interesting to see (they're moving into boardgames, War of Ashes was their favorite book that's sold terribly, they're looking to focus on smaller releases for newer Kickstarters that don't kill them). It was also interesting seeing Pondsmith talk about the development of Cyberpunk 2077 at a panel.

Watching you folks eat at Nada was a special kind of torture after filling up with Indian at Haveli (which was also good, but it wasn't Nada). The Old Spaghetti Factory was good but put me in a starch coma as soon as I hit my hotel room after that.

This was the year I discovered Call of Cthulu. Played a demo then I immediately threw money at it. A Chaosium rep gave me a bunch of pregens and a free-rpg-day module so I could run it in the basement of the Omni for my group. They were creeped out, 5 stars.

Played a ton of other stuff as usual. Buying Star Trek:Ascendancy as soon as we get home, it was too big to carry back to the plane. The Artemis bridge simulator (star trek-style) was fun too. As a Battletech fan I was happy to demo their kickstarted game, it's coming along and was pretty fun.

I will burn my dread.

I didn't end up getting to meet with any goons, but my buddy and I did do True Dungeon for the first time. We got paired with a group of 4 50-55 year old dudes who have been playing for 14 years. They kitted us out and dragged us through Hardcore, which was OK but everything we did was ineffectual compared to them, obviously. We left kind of wondering if we'd do it again, after that experience.

Then I pulled a 25,000 gold token from the loot box and flipped it the next day to fully fund my Gen Con trip. 10/10

edit: I also didn't pick up everything I wanted to, but I'm excited about the Polaris RPG stuff I picked up. I snagged Red Dragon Inn, too, which has already proven to be an enormous hit with my fiance which makes it worth the price.

Yeah, it made it kind of lame. They were really nice about it, but it was kind of clear they were nice because we were going along with what they wanted to do. There was another couple in the group that approached my friend and I halfway through and apologized for the way it turned out, and said it probably wasn't the best experience for us. It was a bit of a letdown to finally hit an enemy and do something like 5 damage, while the four hardcore guys were doing something like 30 damage a pop. I walked away thinking there was a cool game there, but I'd probably not do it again unless I could roll in with a full group of friends (which is unlikely, since my yearly Gen Con group is just 2-4 people).

The retail on the gold was $500 according to the websites I saw and the other people in my party (the hardcore guys were nice enough to look through all my loot and explicitly tell me what was worth something and told me so I didn't get taken on trades), but I found a reseller who was willing to meet me the next morning. I sold it for $360 cash and walked away extremely happy.

I'm curious what was it like for the super serious run through? My group and another we all know decided to give it a try this year for the hell of it and found it a bit boring, even with almost a full 10 group who all knew each other.

We went for the puzzle aspect because action/LARPing sounded a bit too extreme for us, but from what I have heard, the actual combat one just adds more fighting scenarios in the same way. The "combat" in it is putting your weapon pogs onto a slider and playing shuffle board essentially. The final fight made half the people in the group just sit and do nothing because only ranged could effect it, pretty lame to make a mechanic where people are literally doing nothing. Everything about it felt pretty cheap and not worth the price. Maybe worth trying once, but I wouldn't go back and probably not recommend it to anyone on the fence.

Had a fair amount of events this year, but as usual, the best stuff is almost always the free games going on you just pull a chair up to. Probably spent more on food than games again, ate like a monster every night.

This is pretty much my experience, as well. The "super serious" run through meant that we had to decide on a set order of who attacked and stick strictly to that every single room (we did the combat version of the dungeon). They never took the time to explain to me why we had to attack in a certain order, or why I went when I did instead of earlier/later. Our final encounter wasn't ranged-only, but the second-to-last one was (the one where the Drow guide turned into a Drow Priestess/spider-woman) and as a melee fighter I spent every round taunting... and then the enemy attacked everyone but me. So I'm not really sure how my taunt mechanics works. No one explained it to me.

After reading your experience and reflecting back on my own, I think I would be really sour on my run-through if I hadn't made a bunch of money off of it. For $56 I'd rather go and buy a middle-ranger priced game from the exhibit hall and spend 4 hours playing it with my friends.

Clue: Zero
I think a lot of True Dungeon is who you are with and what kind of players they are (which is true for most role playing games). This was my first year trying it, and I did it twice, once with 3 other goons (puzzle based) and once solo (combat based).

The first time with goons all 4 of us were new, but the others were experienced. They kitted us out from their tokens, dropped the difficulty to normal (pretty sure they were going to go hardcore otherwise), and it never felt like we were being excluded from helping to solve the puzzle. Hell the whole group was singing along with the (goon) bard with such traditional bardic songs as Bohemian Rhapsody and Baby Got Back while doing the combat rooms. I had a lot of fun even though we died in the last room past the ranged weapon combat (we were told we could knock her down into melee range by hitting 4 of her legs to knock her off the wall, maybe a normal vs hardcore difference).

The second one (different story) where I went solo had a couple who had some number of tokens but didn't really offer them up, me and one other person who'd done it once, and the rest newbies. I helped the newbies as best I could, and after failing the first puzzle and being pushed through the door to the next room with damage we did awesome all the way until the final fight against the Mindflayer. We were pissed that the DM was taking forever to do the rounds so we weren't getting hits in, but the Mindflayer was hitting us like a ton of bricks and we ended up fleeing when the horn to change rooms went off. Reading the epilogue text where they talk about you fleeing back from the Fae world, I'm pretty sure no one is supposed to be able to beat the Mindflayer and everyone is supposed to flee, and the DM was trying to help us all stay alive to escape.

Think I prefer the puzzle rooms, not that shuffleboard isn't fun. And had a good enough time I'll probably do it again next year, although maybe not both stories. Might even pick up some extra chips; future TD grognard in training.

Yeah, great at getting us into Wawa.
So this was my first GenCon, and my first con, well, ever.

My brother-in-law and his family lives in an Indy suburb, but they have a dog. Since I'm allergic to dogs, my wife and I had to find a hotel. We booked an extended stay about 20 minutes from the convention center back in, I think, April. The whole week cost about $300. Our drive from DC to Indy took about 9.5 hours - we did pretty well, I think. I got the wife and I in the car at 4am. We got to the family's house and met up for drinks and relaxing.

Later that (Wednesday) evening, we figured we'd head down for the beer garden and will call. The line for will call stretched back to the convention center entrance. So we gave up on that and just had beer.

Thursday morning, the wife and I got there super early, and parked in an open lot next to the Indiana Historical Society (or something) that my brother in law told me about. When we got out of the car, we saw tons of signs threatening to tow us. So we drove over to a garage across from St. Elmo's instead. Walking over, we found the Mayfair van on Georgia street, and discovered that they were giving out free coffee, water, and pins. We texted our friends and family to meet there.

Then we walked over to the Exhibit Hall opening, and sat through the lame introductions/speeches, and followed the masses in. I looked around for a little in the hall before my first event - Intro to Dejarik (Star Wars Chess). This was pretty cool - someone built a wooden replica of the chess board from the Millennium Falcon, complete with lights. It used the miniatures from another Star Wars game, and had character cards for play. I was curious about whether this would ever be produced, but was told the board was custom - and gave me a sheet of rules and character cards. :)

After that, my next event was the WWE Raw Deal card game, which I'd never had a chance to play. It ended up being really fun, and I got a free (Kane-based) deck out of it. I went back to the Exhibit Hall to look at games and buy stuff I didn't need. I demo'd Dastardly Dirigibles, which was a ton of fun. I got a free promo card for the game, and bought it on the spot. Very fun game about using cards to competitively build an airship.

The wife and I wanted a break and a snack, and the Georgia Street food trucks were packed with lines. So we walked over to Scotty's Brewhouse. This was a little farther away than I thought it'd be, but that was fine. We had a few beers and snacks while they played Princess Bride and Ice Pirates.

Afterwards, we got a free Scotty's die. I only knew about this via a promotional email, but apparently you had to ask for it. As in, our waiter had to go ask the manager for one. /shrug

Anyway, we walked around the Exhibit Hall for a while. The wife found a shirt, and later, art prints and a game called JunKing near the back right corner of the hall. We later ended up buying a bunch of prints (mostly Nintendo and Miyazaki tributes, and some original stuff), which the artist signed. I also made sure to buy some Heroclix singles I was after. My last thing of the day was playing a Heroclix game in Hall C, set up by HCRealms people, since WizKids skipped GenCon. That went about 2-3 hours. Wife and I headed home and picked up Wendy's for a late dinner.

Friday, we got to the Con a little later, and parked in an underground garage next door to the convention center. We met up with folks next to Starbuck's in a long line, and went in. The wife and I had a King of Tokyo event up first, and we both loved it.

We kind of wanted to get in on a Mammoth King of Tokyo later, but never had the chance. The wife got to demo King of New York on her own later, which she liked, but preferred Tokyo. The only thing noteworthy about this event was that it was listed as being at the Marriott - and there are like 3 of those outside the con. Luckily, we picked the right one first.

Next, several of us went to demo One Deck Dungeon by Asmadi. You and a friend cooperate to use dice to battle through a card-based dungeon. You pick a character type, and treat the cards you deal (face down) as "doors", and "open" them for encounters. My brother in law had demo'd the beta last year, and this version was a bit more complicated. The guy explaining it was a little confusing, but I wasn't worried - I know it's buy-worthy, and my brother-in-law is much better and explaining/understanding the mechanics. The only shame was that the game isn't on sale until October.

After that, I spent a while re-learning how to play Star Wars CCG in advance of an event on Saturday, and we geared up for True Dungeon. No pics (not allowed, even though several people in our group did it anyway). It felt very rushed, as we each got a bag of coins, and were given character types of what was left. I got Fighter, but had no melee weapons. Our group (six of us) went through with a bunch of people who didn't know each other. We couldn't work as a team because everyone wanted to do their own thing, so people kept "discovering" the same clues over and over, and we solved none of the puzzles. I died in the second to last room, but the DM 'revived' our group for the boss fight, which we still lost, but got prizes anyway. Then we did the prize pulls, and I got pants of dodging and some other junk. Later, I saw the booth selling True Dungeon coins, which I would've loaded up on ahead of time if I'd seen.

My gripes with True Dungeon:
- Having rules printed and hung on the wall by the entrance would've really helped.
- Having the DM for each room wearing a shirt, sideways hat, and fanny pack kind of took you out of the gaming experience. Like, the flying demon woman is in costume/character, but the room DM is just a guy?
- If you're a certain character type, you might as well be given a coin pack relevant to that character, or at least encourage group-wide trades for gear.
- $56? I probably won't do this again.

After that, our group wanted to have dinner, but everything nearby was an hour-plus wait. So we walked over to Scotty's again and had burgers and watched Ghostbusters. They were out of free dice this time, though. I did pick up a Pathfinder Goblin Ale t-shirt for $12, though.

Saturday, my wife skipped the Con. I took the day to see most of the Exhibit Hall. Our group met up for lunch, only to find Georgia Avenue packed. Someone realized, though, that the Ali Baba truck actually had a tent in the courtyard next to the church. No line, tables with seats, and great falafel/gyros/etc. Fuckin' awesome.

After that, I went to play Star Wars CCG. I had found some Slave Leia card sleeves ahead of time for my deck, though I had to buy two 50-pack sets in order to have enough for 60 cards.

It ended up being a 40-card draft - you and a partner shared drafts. Before opening, you figured out who got Dark and Light, and gave the other faction to your partner. That went 3 rounds over 4 hours, and the prize for staying until the end was a pack of hard-to-find cards. This was some awesome nostalgia. :)

I met up with one of my brothers-in-law to do a Battletech Demo (I'd never played), which was straightforward but fun.

Then we got drinks at the beer garden and sampled a few food trucks. Then we got into Witch Hunt.

My wife voted me out pretty much right away. (I was a witch.)

Sunday morning, I finally saw the rest of the Exhibit Hall, and demo'd a few more games. Brother-iL and I managed to get in a demo of Seafall. He wasn't thrilled that the game asked you to permanently mark/destroy pieces of the game, but we were both intrigued.

I managed to buy some neat stuff - a few more Heroclix, Raw Deal cards, meeples, a game called Villagers and Villains, a Star Wars miniatures Death Star mat, some really neat fantasy coins from some Australian guys, and so on. The nieces and nephews had a good time with Pathfinder, face-painting, and a card game called Exodus. About the only things I didn't get a chance to do that I wanted were demos of Boss Monster and Scythe.

There were a LOT of loving people, but everyone was super nice and polite, though I smelled a lot of various body odors that could be solved through showering. I was amazed that there were always long lines for making GBS threads. I don't think I can go back next year, but I had a blast.

Good tip on Haveli, that place was double-plus-good! Fantastic food, no wait. I give their chicken patia two thumbs up. I got to game and chill with friends I don't get to see very often (including a couple guys I hadn't seen since college). I played in the "Friday Night Mayhem" Infinity tournament, which was good clean fun. My wife and I bounced from a pretty lame Star Wars game halfway through (note to self, there are like three or four companies who've made Star Wars RPGs, and if it doesn't say "Fantasy Flight," it's probably crunchy-as-gently caress D20 garbage). BlackIronHeart and I got in on a pretty rad Eclipse Phase game Sunday morning to finish off the show. I had good fun playing another character's split personality.

I didn't schedule a ton of stuff because I was trying to get into the main Infinity tourney on Friday, but it sold out instantaneously once it opened. But I always found ways to fill my time, including running a couple of Harn-flavored Apocalypse World games. My biggest regret is that I didn't make time to meet up with all you jokers at various points. I literally never turned on GroupMe because I was always running to the next thing. :sigh:

Next year, though, I want to get in on some of the Goon gaming goodness. I am especially intrigued by the concept of Goon-Fiasco.

How do you get one of those VIG passes at Gencon? I know it cost more.

Murder one of the pass holders and claim it for your own. (This is only half joking, there's a huge waiting list that only gets access when someone doesn't renew theirs)

When in doubt, err on the side of Awesome!

Now it's a random drawing of every one who is on the list. This year two or three VIGs didn't renew.
They're changing the companion system. Next year VIGs only get one companion badge. The theory is that it'll justify adding more regular VIG badges.

They're changing something because the Gen Con management won't confirm any details for the program beyond that.

Any of y'all VIG, thinking about maybe putting my hat in the lottery, not sure if it's worth. But after getting a taste of that Skywalk I don't know if I can go back.

VIG is pretty good if you're able to get in early enough to do the 9am-Thursday-Exhibit-Hall run and guaranteed hotel block room. That said, the former doesn't appeal to a lot of people since they're not planning on flipping stuff and the latter didn't seem a problem after using that Python script, so.

Staying off-Skywalk is a sucker's game, Embassy Suites rooms be damned.

I should also say I did an Empty Epsilon Artemis-alike game and for $22 instead of $50 it was definitely worth it.
