Hadn't heard much about it lately and I guess that'd be why.

This is bad if it means the company that was paying you $17/hr does this, and you go from $17/hr to $0. Ironically, part of the TPP would be people being able to sue companies in Sri Lanka for not paying $17/hr, and making it unattractive to outsource your work. But TPP is bad because it includes protection for drug patents.

But if the NG is burned to bootstrap the solar production, and ultimately Ivanpah generates more electricity than the NG plant could have with the same amount of fuel, that's still a win for solar, right? Obviously it would be better to use less natural gas, but at least it's being used efficiently to jumpstart a solar plant. (Edit: a win from an environmental standpoint, if not an economic one.) Didn't we have a power generation thread at some point? This is really fascinating stuff, but only tangentially related to US politics.

We discussed this a few days back, but essentially one arguement against it is the fact that it lets companies outsource their workers to places that are a lot crappier and not pay them well for it, making for a race to the bottom in places where they used to be. There is also teh problem of more interconnected economic networks going bugfuck mental if a large thing collapses in a nation state somewhere else on the planet -cough- 2008 crash -cough cough-.

To me, personally: if corporate entities are literally too large to police, because they're basically their own borderless economies, and they more-and-more frequently have their own security forces, then we have an actual scary problem. But, usually, with internet peoples it's just something about the Jews and Jesus coming back.

PoorMoralCompass posted:Has there ever been a sound argument explaining why globalism is... frightening? What the definition of 'globalism' anyway? Globalism is typically associated with sweatshops and outsourcing jobs, coupled with mass immigration and falling wages. To people who are living paycheck to paycheck, it's terrifying to think of an influx of people willing to do their job for less. Then you have the added tribalism on top of it, making it a racist shitshow.

The bit in that Monmouth poll about how 63% of voters are just plain sick of the E-Mails and don't want to hear any more about them is a hidden gem of 'Oh gently caress' for the GOP, I think.
|
# ? Aug 8, 2016 18:38 |
I think the GOP overplayed their hand. As a backdrop of "look another thing Crooked Hillary is being shady about" it would have been somewhat effective but going all in and having it be another bunch of nothing that even the Republican FBI head said wasn't illegal and most people are going to just shrug. It didn't help you had a convention where people were treating it like it was a capital crime and if you can't nab a politician with that (let alone allow bored_hillary.gif to be created) you look weak as hell.
