I agree with this except for "Stupid" since NSMBU and LuigiU are actually good, just not really "new" anymore.

I don't think there is anything to "gamepad killed WiiU". I do think it was much more "marketing of gamepad and WiiU killed WiiU"

That anyone except grannies with dementia thought it was a peripheral for an old system was a huge problem, and pretty much everyone who isn't a turbonerd (like us) did for quite some time. This is down to the naming convention and the lack of showing off the system as a whole, and then the system essentially looking just like a Wii anyhow, rather than anything to do with the gamepad itself.

The high-cap battery should have come standard, but I'm not sure how a company could both make the gamepad an add-on peripheral and do more cool stuff with it. If it didn't come standard nobody would have done much of anything with it.

Not to mention the games that required it would probably have not sold half as well. What would Splatoon have looked like if you had to purchase a relatively expensive peripheral to play it?

The Gamepad came standard and still no developer used the piece of poo poo other than a glorified menu; wonderful, it only took a massive controller with a huge screen on it so I wouldn't have to press start, a problem I never had.

They could have shoved in gyro to the pro controller for things like Splatoon.

The dumb rumor I heard is this is actually going to be the Vita 2 announcement.

Nintendo merely said they would announce NX details in the fall, which I would presume means a Nintendo direct on December 20th at 11:59 pm Hawaii time.

Splatoon needs it's second screen for coordinating which teammate you'll jump towards or where you want to set up an Inkstrike. There's no way it could be played with a normal controller when the GamePad is being used with it to its fullest capacity.

I mean..there's about 1000 different ways they could've just used the main screen for maps/jumps/strikes and acting like there isn't is really dumb.

I concede that dual shock is closer to modern controllers, but N64 had right hand directional input first (not better) and the trigger on the back rather than just shoulder buttons on top was a big deal. People also seem to forget that analog was a huge move. That Sony moved the tech along a year later doesnt erase this.

wasnt even first analog at all though lmao the ps1 had an analog controller before the n64 even released! controllers with single analog sticks have existed in some form since the late 80s even. what made them take off was using two on a sensible controller, not the n64s three ponged piece of poo poo having a single bad stick.

the basis for modern pads are sega pads and the dual shock. nintendo pads are largly irrelevant.

Trent posted:

Expansion slots, force feedback, right-side directional control, trigger opposite stick, and analog inputs. Not just one innovation.

I actually think you could say that multiple ways to hold it was a good/interesting idea in theory, and even led to the wiimote's forward/sideways/nunchuk layout.

Nothing about it was the best ever, but it did a lot of innovative stuff that's stuck around/evolved.

expansion slots: no one uses them
force feedback: existed long before the n64, and its implementation wasnt the one taken forward at all
right side directional control: again done by other pads for a long time, and what was successful was right side control with a second stick
trigger opposite stick: not the first, also not relevant to anything other than nintendo controllers.
analog inputs: seeabove.

Trent posted:

Ever seen a wiimote? You know, one of if not the best selling controller of all time?

lets go off console sales and assume 1 console = one pad for simplicity. ps1 obviously shipped originally without a dualshock but given its early adoption and extra pads and simplicitys sake i dont care actually:

wii motes: 100 million
xbox 360/one pads: 100 million
dual shocks: nearly 400 million

hmmmmmmmmmm lol

I hated using the map on the controller for Splatoon. Sure it was fine but I would have rather had the option to bring a map up on my TV screen and use it that way. There's no reason each team member couldn't have a button assigned to them, open the map and press the button and off you go. They could have made a cursor controlled by one of the sticks to place ink strikes, etc. Looking down at the map was disorienting for me and killed the flow of the game for me.

It's really not that hard for a game to pull up a quick map and you click which point you wanna go to all within maybe 2 seconds. Splatoon is a phenomenal game and the controls own. Gyro movement owns. Don't act like maps haven't been done for a long time though.

Splatoon is definitely a better game because of the gamepad. Hell, the game even makes great use of the much maligned 2nd screen map.

I liked Wii Sports golf where you put the gamepad on the ground and could see the ball in sand/etc. with the club head visible. Unfortunately stuff like that means your game requires at least one additional controller of some kind. If only the sides could've detached from the gamepad screen or something...

The Dual Analog Controller was first displayed under glass at the PlayStation Expo 96-97 which was held from November 1 to November 4, 1996.[1] It was released in Japan in April 1997, coincident with the Japanese releases of analog-capable titles Tobal 2 and Bushido Blade.[2]

Before its release in the United States, Sony decided that vibration feedback would be removed from the European and American versions of the controller. According to a Sony spokesperson, "We evaluated all the features and decided, for manufacturing reasons, that what was most important to gamers was the analog feature."[3]

It was released in the United States on August 27, 1997; and in Europe in September 1997 with little promotion. A few months later, the first DualShock controller was released in Japan on November 20, 1997.

Nintendoland is the only thing I can think of that did something other than a menu/map/2d-interface on the screen, but that's because it was asymmetrical multiplayer. I'd love some examples where having the gamepad was absolutely necessary and it did something that standard controllers couldn't. The developers surely didn't see the need for it.
