Yeah Sony is really trying new things w/r/t Internet-age marketing, they tried exploiting international relations for The Interview and they tried carefully tending and curating an outrage garden for GB2016, and honestly both marketing campaigns worked really well, they just forgot to make the movies actually worth seeing

I'm gonna be honest, for all this movie's guerrilla marketing pissed me off, if it turned out good, I'd have seen it

"Sony disputes the amount of the potential loss, insisting that revenue streams from merchandising and such attractions as a new Ghostbusters exhibit at Madame Tussauds and a theme park ride in Dubai will help defray any deficit. The studio also notes that the number of people renting the 1984 film has soared over the summer."

I'm sure that ride in Dubai and a wax museum is bringing in all the cash, but this is the first time in years I've seen a ton of GB related merchandise on shelves. While the film may be unsuccessful, it just existing to reinvigorate the brand in order to turn GB into something akin to Spongebob/Minions gimmick might end up being a minor win.

those campaigns generated a lot of buzz that translated into big losses, so I'm not sure they could be considered to have "worked really well"

The buzz is all you need from a marketing campaign. The big losses came from the movies themselves sucking. Marketing did their job just fine. :colbert:

In this thread or another I suggested that GB2016 is maybe going to have some long term popularity because it's so relatively harmless and inoffensive that you're going to have a generation of kids just drinking it in for years because the parents are going to let it play on loop and it will keep their attention. You'll get some cartoon and toys from that, Hot Topic will have a steady supply of Holtzmann-heavy swag for a while while just selling non-specific Stay-Puft, Ecto-1 and GB-logo stuff.

Eh. It's not like the Sinatra original or the Clooney reboot movies are untouchable. The first Clooney movie is a fun heist movie with a good ensemble cast, Ocean's 12 was forgettable, and Ocean's 13 is just okay. A female ensemble cast could work out great, but it all comes down to casting.

I've been keeping an eye out and I've seen jack poo poo here in Australia. Apart from some trams stop posters and billboards that seemed to disappear within a few weeks and one department store selling Stay Puft marshmallows you'd never know it had already hit cinemas.

That department store didn't even have any GB action figures in their toy department.

To repeat myself from this thread or another, I think I know what probably could have helped GB2016: Less leads.

I've been giving this some thought, and at first I said they probably needed to get rid of one of the GB and the Kevin character, but after giving it some more thought, they should have gotten rid of trying to emulate the GB "team" formula and been a buddy cop flick, instead. The Wiig and McCarthy characters are almost interchangeable, Holtzman and Kevin are cartoon characters.

Dump Holtzman and Patty, and just build the film around Wiig and McCarthy, instead. Just two GBs I think would have been a major enough change from the original GB formula that I almost feel like the initial debates of the 'all female GB team/all-new team/new universe' wouldn't have occurred. McCarthy neared cartoonish levels, so just throw a lot of the Holtzman characterization onto her, make Wiig more of a stick in the mud serious one, then make more of the focus on them to be more reliant on one another. If you get the film out the door and it works, you do your GB2019 movie in a few years and maybe you go ahead and expand the cast with more GBs or something.

Sony's PR department legitimately is the best in the business, their staff that oversees, approves, and makes movies themselves? Not so much.

yeah an all female oceans eleven makes sense and there's tons of great female actors that could headline a movie like that...

Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna and Awkwafina also are joining the ensemble heist film, dubbed 'Oceans Ocho.'

Add Blake Lively for Ocean's Nueve.

Sony hardly is alone in suffering from audience rejection of sequels this summer.

I like the implication that it's the audience's fault that this crop of summer movies is being roundly panned. It's not that they're mostly bad and uninspired movies, it's audiences being cynical.

Rihanna sucked when she was a voice actress, Mindy Kaling is a hack who is literally writing a wish-fulfillment show for herself, HBC's been stuck in too many Tim Burton productions for me to remember if she was ever good at all, and what the gently caress is an Awkwafina?

(It also has Anne Hathaway and Cate Blanchett in it, so it least it won't be total rubbish.)

Helena Bonham Carter was pretty good in Fight Club and The King's Speech and also I had a crush on her when I was 17

and I've half-paid attention to a couple Mindy Project episodes (my fiancee watches it on Hulu sometimes) and she at least made her self-insert into a neurotic bumbling klutz a la Tina Fey's self-insert in 30 Rock, but other than that yeah it's kind of wish-fulfillmenty

But let's be honest, the original O11 worked despite also having some no-names and some hacks balanced out by some great actors, OO could easily do likewise

I've always found it weird that "all-girl version of 'X' team" is somehow considered more progressive than "team made up of both genders working together as professionals" but whatever. New Ocean's flick could still be cool but yeah, I can't see HBC as anything but one of Tim Burton's weirdo actors nowadays.

I've noticed that the kind of people who pay attention to this stuff seem to care more about whether there aren't any good male roles than whether there are good female roles

because the kind of lowest-common-denominator feminism that thinks big-budget Hollywood blockbusters are the be-all end-all of cultural discourse also tends to think "is it feminist" and "do men dislike it" are the same question

I'm actually all for an all-women Ocean's 11, but yeah a lot of those casting choices are loving dire.

I guess Anne Hathaway and Cate Blanchett are solid anchors, and if HBC hasn't gone off the deep end I could see her working well with them in a Clooney/Damon/Pitt dynamic. Still, I never want to hate on her but Mindy Kaling is very easy to dislike, Rhianna's only true talent I've seen over her career is her ability to succeed on hustle over talent, and Awkwafina.... well hey every movie needs a dedicated clown.

Then again hey I'm intrigued, so that's a start.

Seriously, they weren't trying to capture the spirit of the 80's, they were trying to make a funny, visually entertaining movie. It doesn't make any sense to get so angry at a movie for failing to do something it wasn't even trying to do in the first place.
