Got a pair of B&W DM7 MK2's this weekend for $30. They're great, but one tweeter's hosed up so I'm going to have to figure that out.

Oh, i've been looking for a set of those for a long time, but ppl are now aware that their used poo poo is gold sometimes. Considering the audio quality of B&W they would do good in my living room. Or any other room for that matter. A buddy of mine has a pair of B&W Diamond. Simply amazing.

Picked up a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon DC a few weeks ago & love it! What do you guys recommend for cable upgrades? I wasn't sure if RCA Monoprice cables would be that big of an improvement over stock cables or if I should spend the money on BlueJean cables?

For what it's worth I got some blue jean RCA interconnects a while back because all I had at home were lovely thin RCA cables intended for use in regular audio applications, definitely not suitable for phono. I wanted something that was durable with plenty of shielding, and they've been suiting those needs for several years now. For the price, they're very worth it. Like $40 for a 4 foot length of cable with tech flex? Ain't nothing wrong with that. I did have some of the "premium" RCA cables from monoprice but found that the connectors were too bulky to fit on the back of some amps where the jacks are pretty close together. If they're under $6, I'd say go for the Monoprice for some relative peace of mind, I guess. Otherwise you're basically just throwing money into a bullshit hole and you're better off putting it into a new records/cart/gear fund if you really want to spend it on this hobby.

Cables are a huge waste of money, but if you've got everything else sorted and you can see the cables it's okay to buy some that look nice just because you like the look of them. Being happy makes music sound better.

I sold off my BeoCenter 8500 with my spare pair of Redline 60.2, and picked up a white BeoSystem 7000 that matched my speakers and MX7000 retrogaming TV  Also in the pics, my BeoSystem 2500. Good thing I will never need anything from those shelves. Maybe I'll pick up a white Wii eventually to go with the theme.

Very nice! IMHO B&O made the best CRT TVs ever. It's such a shame that they dropped the ball on image quality when they moved to LCD.

Picked up a "working" vintage Pioneer that I can't get any sound from. Both A and B speaker outputs produce loud humming through the speakers, and through headphones as well. Thoughts/ideas/suggestions?

Today I picked up this beautiful Sony TC-230W at Goodwill for $20. It's consumer-level and they're apparently notorious for failing after many years, but this one works perfectly. Someone must have kept it serviced. I couldn't believe how well it worked and how good of condition the wood cabinet was in. The only problem is inconsistent volumes for each channel but there is a separate volume control so I can adjust for that. It came with that huge tape on there, recorded at the slowest speed. I only listened to it for a bit but there was some Manfred Mann, Frigid Pink, and The Supremes, so I guess it was someone's long-rear end mixtape from the early 70s. wolfbiker posted:Pioneer SX-680. But it won't really compare to the nice Akai's or other high-end upright reel-to-reels that serious people are out there buying. I think those things all worked out to less than $100 together (though I've upgraded pieces in there over the years so the total spent is higher). At this point I really am only missing an 8-track player. Every one I've bought has been garbage and either didn't work or barely played. I think I have a couple working 8-tracks but they're integrated into cheap receivers. I need to find a standalone one, preferably with a wood cabinet.

I've got a question about a couple of Akai reel-to-reel tape decks. My stepfather recently asked me if I wanted these and they're really cool and look brand new. I honestly don't think I would ever use them though and I know there are people, few they may be, who might be interested in these. My question is, can anyone here give me any kind of idea how much they're reasonably worth? One is an Akai X360DS (special is emblazoned on it, I'm assuming thats what the S is for) and the other is an Akai X1800SD. The 1800 has an 8 track player on the side and has the door, the 360 doesn't have its door. Otherwise they're in excellent physical shape. I don't know about mechanically because I don't have any reels, however when powered up, the lights come on and the wheels spin when buttons are pressed. These things had been boxed up for 30 years. Anyway, any help is appreciated. I just don't want to give them away, but I don't want to ask some ridiculous amount either. Pic is attached.

Christ, it's been a long time since I posted here. Have I posted here since I got my Altec Valencias? I have a pair of Altec Valencia 846A "Iconics" now.  There is no better feeling then having the ability to piss off the entire cul-de-sac with two channels of 25W RMS true Tube Power, paired to speakers with an efficiency rating of something like 114db/w/yard. I've hung on to mine for the past few years even though I've been too lazy to put a new cart on it. It just looks too drat good. Also it has a pretty cool anti-skip system so you can play your records even if there are a bunch of people dancing around your living room

It's the first one I've had that can be controlled with the remote control, which is pretty amazing compared to having to lift up and put down the tonearm or having to push buttons on other players! I have a TX2 turntable too, which I'll put up for sale. The tonearm, mechanism and platter is all suspended together as a unit inside the chassis, so if any vibration hits they will all move together, and not relative to each other. It's very ingenious! I lucked out and got an MMC4 cartridge in great shape on this one. The cartridges are just getting rarer and rarer, cost a shitton of money and some can be refurbished at a high cost, but not all. I bought two broken turntables to salvage the cartridges from them, so I have a spare MMC5 I can sell you if you want it. Won't be cheap though!

Some people like to use the B&O cartridges on other turntables, B&O used to make an adapter, and I think Soundsmith still makes one. Of course, that doesn't help you a whole lot. However, it is possible to mod a B&O turntable to take a P-mount cartridge, but it involves cutting the tonearm to shorten it, so probably not worth it.

Well the spare cart sold, together with my TX2 turntable and the Beosystem 2500 you can see in my pics above. They're split from other lots I bought earlier, so exact profit is hard to tell, but I now have €650 of fresh cash to spend on more fun stuff credit card My Beosystem 7000 doesn't have an RIAA, so I've asked a vintage B&O specialist in the UK to make me a custom wiring harness that maintains the datalink between the receiver and the turntable, while breaking out the audio signal to phono plugs so I can run it through a preamp.

Put a Sanyo turntable I fixed up up for sale online, lady drives 1h15min to pick it up, goes home without when it turns out to be indeed a turntable and not a complete stereo with speakers she can use to play records.

The PAS-2 is being used currently because the Leak Point One Stereo was a noisy pile of thin sounding British poo poo and my McIntosh MX114 needs to have all of its tantalum capacitors replaced and I'm too lazy to do it right now. Also, I've been running old Chinese Milsurp EL34A's in the Leak Stereo 50 for the past four years. $40/quad from an ebay seller and the construction looks like it was made on old Phillips or Amperex tooling. I picked up a classic at the fleamarket today. It works fine and is in good cosmetic condition, but it does need a good cleaning and lots of TLC to be perfect, so I'm flipping it. Also got the matching TL2520 speakers, and discovered the bass foam rings were just disintegrated into dust. For fun (and of course profit) I picked up this, which still sells for silly money to people who wants them on boats, gyms, construction sites etc.  A dude gave away a Harman Kardon DVD 1 for free, and I was there! It didn't play discs, but I opened it, pulled the mechanical bits back and forth, and now it works just fine! It does RGB Scart and makes my old DVDs look spectacular on my CRT TV.  I got a Marantz CD-72 MkII for $20. It has the Philips CDM4 tray mechanism, which was used on a whole bunch of CD players and fails on 100% of these. A new cog and belt is $10 on eBay, and turns a $20 CD player into a $200 CD player.  And finally, I sold two of these earlier, but got another one for just so cheap that I couldn't not buy it.

In my TV unit I've found space for my turntable, and was thinking before I get my main receiver (as I'm only going to be 2.0 in my condo whereas when we get a larger place I'll go full Atmos) I was considering getting a vintage amp as I used to like running my Sansui AU2200 in my office connected to an iMac for general purpose stuff. I'd then relegate it to audio only stuff in the future property. There's a Sony TA-1150 listed in a local pawn store at $150 in 'good' working order. Does that seem reasonable? It seems a well liked piece of kit. I've never bought from US pawn stores before so unsure as to how trustworthy they tend to be, especially for older hardware.
