I'm glad (and shocked) that Raichu is finally getting the attention it deserves, but I wonder why only Gen I Pokemon are getting Alola forms.

Also, Surge Surfer sounds like it might finally give me an excuse to use those terrain moves. Maybe.

I kind of figured that Game Freak is just trying to balance some of the classic first gen guys with the frequently more powerful current gen monsters. Mega evolutions helped with that quite a bit, but historically it seems as though newer monsters tend to be stronger or more useful overall.

Personally I'm glad for it, not just for nostalgia, but I genuinely like a lot of the first gen roster. I also enjoy battling in gen 1 despite its many mechanical problems because of its simplicity. Some of the current meta-game is way too drat complicated, and it's hard to remember all the abilities and moves. Hell, I legitimately can't even remember the names of a lot of the Pokemon after gen 4.

Update 34: Dragon Her Heels

Blackthorn City

Blackthorn City: A Quiet Mountain Retreat
(From the plant, blackthorn, where the sloe fruit grows. It's a slightly larger blueberry that's closer to a plum.)
Fusube City: A quiet city standing among the mountains.
(From fusube-iro, smoke black colour and fusuberu, to smoke. Can also be from the Fusube-yama, a mountain in north-central Japan and can be roughly translated as to hide and surrounding area.)

Mmm, now this is a Mart selection I can use. There's a fair amount to do in this small city, so let's get started.

: Want to trade it for my DODRIO?

Now this is a weird trade. As far as I know, this is the only trade in the entire series that requires the Pokemon to be of a certain gender. We can't obtain a Dragonair just yet, but what we'll receive in return is fair, since we haven't found either of the Dodrio family yet. In GS, this trade would get you a Rhydon, which we also won't be able to get for a little while.

We'll be back.

: I can make POKéMON forget moves. Shall I make a POKéMON forget?

The Move Deleter is very useful, as it's the only way to get rid of HM moves, as well as Gen 2 moves to allow trading in the Time Capsule. Still no Move Reminder, that comes next gen.

"for you."

: However, it would be impossible for a run-of-the-mill trainer to win.

Our final gym is a Dragon one. RIP Dark.

Well that's thematic.

All we have left is Squirtle.

: I'm SANTOS of Saturday... You can have this...

: SPELL TAG... Ghost-type moves get stronger... It will frighten you... ... See you again on another Saturday... I won't have any more gifts...

Kaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy? That's all the Siblings and all the items they can give us. Woo. Gym time!

Pokemon Gym

: It's been a long journey, but we are almost done! Count on me! CLAIR uses the mythical and sacred dragon-type POKéMON. You can't damage them very easily. But you know, they're supposed to be weak against ice-type moves.

Hmm, we'll see how much that holds water.

HP: 41 | ATK: 64 | DEF: 45 | SP.ATK: 50 | SP.DEF: 50 | SPD: 50 | TOTAL: 300
#241: Dratini

We'll be seeing a fair few Dratini in this update and they all have these really annoying level up moves.

Why does no one believe that I met Batman?

Strength puzzles!

:woop:

"past me!"

: CLAIR would be livid if I did!

HP: 55 | ATK: 65 | DEF: 95 | SP.ATK: 95 | SP.DEF: 45 | SPD: 85 | TOTAL: 440
#187: Seadra

Mamma mia!

Here's another Strength puzzle and we'll need to do it, cause there's some lava to cross.

"one percent!"

HP: 61 | ATK: 84 | DEF: 65 | SP.ATK: 70 | SP.DEF: 70 | SPD: 80 | TOTAL: 420
#242: Dragonair

This is getting real annoying.

: Thanks for showing me!

Rock pushing!

"type POKéMON."

Yeah, this is similar to Morty's Gym, where you have a Dragon Gym in a gen with 4 Dragon types. At least you have some more options with Horsea and Seadra.

I'm glad you don't, they're annoying to fight.

Does that mean I have to get permission too? Maaaaaaan.

Alright, we've got a clear shot to the leader. After one more trainer.

: They are full of life energy. If you're not serious, you won't be able to beat them.

"type moves."

Good thing we have plenty of those! Ooh, this should be a fun battle...

: The world's best dragon master. I can hold my own against even the POKéMON LEAGUE's ELITE FOUR. Do you still want to take me on? ...Fine. Let's do it! As a GYM LEADER, I will use my full power against any opponent!

Gym Leader Battle :siren: VS Leader Clair :siren:

Clair: The Blessed User of Dragon Pokémon
(Rhymes with lair? O-Okay, Bulbapedia, if you say so.)
Ibuki: Blessed Dragon Pokémon Tamer
(From 伊吹 Ibuki, Chinese Juniper and from Mt. Ibuki, in west-central Japan, or from 息吹 ibuki, breath.)

Understandably, a Dragon Gym Leader won't have too much variety, with three Dragonair up front. They do have their subtle differences in attacks, with this one having Surf, but they all have Slam, Dragonbreath and Thunder Wave.

Need to get Future Sight going as soon as possible.

...huh?

Now that's a wombo combo.

The second Dragonair is REALLY ANNOYING.

But that's two down. This is the Ice Beam Dragonair then.

Oh get used to this.

Unsurprisingly, an Ice type can rip through Clair a fair amount. But not all of her team. Dragonbreath (Ryū no Ibuki) is a Dragon move with 60BP, 20PP and 100% accuracy that has a 30% chance to paralyze the target.

HP: 75 | ATK: 95 | DEF: 95 | SP.ATK: 95 | SP.DEF: 95 | SPD: 85 | TOTAL: 540
#188: Kingdra

We shouldn't have too much trouble taking Kingdra down, since I'm just gonna paralyze it, then take it out.

Okay, that's annoying.

OKAY, that's annoying.

GODDAMMIT. Hyper Beam (Hakai Kōsen: Destruction Beam) is a Normal move with 150BP, 5PP and 90% accuracy that requires you to recharge on the turn after you use it. It's not as great as the last gen, but it's a cool way to finish off a battle.

Oh yeah, this Pokemon is pretty fragile, but at the same time, so is my team.

Okay, we should be able to take this thing down no problem. Maybe I could've taken it out by just attacking... but I wanted it to show its stuff. Y-Yeah.

This has gotten so old.

Coooooooooooooooool.

Alright, sheesh, it's over, we have our eighth gym badge.

L I don't believe it. There must be some mistake...

Believe it, toasterhead!

Pokemon Gym

: I may have lost, but you're still not ready for the POKéMON LEAGUE. I know. You should take the dragon user challenge. Behind this GYM is a place called DRAGON'S DEN. There is a small shrine at its center. Go there. If you can prove that you've lost your lazy ideals, I will recognize you as a trainer worthy of a GYM BADGE!

:geno:

I hate you.

: All that's left is the POKéMON LEAGUE challenge. You're on the way to becoming the POKéMON CHAMPION!

We're gonna have to fix this. NEXT TIME!

Oh, uh, not at all. I just like using my whole team in battles so I'm not tempted to sweep through them using super effective moves. Like with the Yellow LP, I'll limit what attacks I'll use during the Elite Four to make it a bit more interesting.

GameFreak is always biased towards Gen 1 because it was the first and most notable gen. Nostalgia grabs, basically.

Surge Surfer honestly sounds kind of bad for Raichu? Raichu has a base speed of 110. Even if it gets a little slower as Alola Raichu, that doesn't seem worth setting up.

On the other hand, it gives Raichu not only 2x speed, but immunity to sleep, and 50% more power in his electric attacks.

In theory, you should be able to get Volt Tackle onto an Alolan Raichu.

Assuming stats stay the same (which they won't, but bare with me), that's a 240 Base Power electric move coming off of something with base 220 speed. GRANTED, Normal Raichu only has a 90 Attack Stat, so it's still something that would only be seen in lower tiers. Unless Alolan Raichu gets stat boosts compared to normal. Honestly, I'd like to see a higher Special Attack, as Pichu can learn Nasty Plot.

Also, I like the new Marowak. It's also really silly. With Lightning Rod it has 3 immunities (Normal, Fighting, Electric). If it remains a Physical Attacker, it's got a handy immunity to Burn and a common form of Paralysis. If it's a Special Attacker, then if you think your opponent's going to use an electric move, including Thunder Wave, then just switch it in, and soak in that beautiful free Sp.A. boost.

(Here's a fun fact I didn't know about Lightning Rod: In Pokemon Emerald, if you lead your party with a pokemon with this ability, trainers will call more often via Match Call.)

Main problem is that Raichu is made out of tissue paper, and you're asking it to either set up Electric Terrain (meaning it needs to come in on something that's scared of it, not attacking because even Not Very Effective hits tend to chunk the hell out of Raichu, and probably slower then it to force a switch) or have someone else carry Electric Terrain for it so it can make the obvious switch into it, wasting turns and giving the opponent a clear signal to get their Grass/Ground/Dragon/Lighting Rod Pokemon ready if they got one. Still, don't know how Alolan forms are going to change statistically, so maybe Hawaiichu will be more of a bulky Electric.

Why Volt Tackle when you can Electro Ball? :getin: Use that speed boost to your advantage, throw out 120 or 150 base power attacks (before boosts) without any recoil.

Clair is very different from the other leaders in Johto. She's got a pretty big team only matched by Morty, but also every one of her Pokemon has some power behind it. Like, with Morty he also has a team of four but Gastly and Haunter are kinda frail. After that there's the leaders with three member teams who are Bugsy, Jasmine, and Pryce. Bugsy's cocoons and Jasmine's magnets aren't much of a problem since they could likely be oneshot since by then most players probably have the means to do so. The issue with Pryce's team isn't really what's on it but more that his Pokemon are lower leveled than the previous leader's Pokemon. So pretty much not only is Clair a spike in levels but also a spike in team composition.

I used a Kingdra once. I hacked it in from the beginning in Soul Silver, just to see how it played. If memory serves, it's offensive and defensive stats are also ridiculously balanced. It'd be probably one of the more versatile overall, but it can't really learn a wide variety of attack types. Water, Dragon, Ice, and I wanna say Flash Cannon are all it can use.

Kingdra's movepool is pretty uniquely narrow for a Dragon-type, although that mostly stems from being a mediocre Gen 1 elemental 'mon as Seadra. It's staggering how narrow a lot of Gen 1 Electric/Water/Fire/Grass movepools are, which makes the exceptions like Starmie and Lapras stand out even more.

Not that any of us cared at the time, of course. I know I'm not the only one who would have Flamethrower/Fire Blast/Fire Spin on Charizard, for example.

To be fair, both T-Bolt and Volt Switch on something isn't terrible. After all, T-Bolt lets your Heliolisk use Electric attacks without switching. Now, having both of those and T-Wave, that's a bit problematic.

Naw, Heliolisk actually has a pretty good movepool, especially for an electric type (of course, it's gimmick is that it's moveset and abilities make it usable in three of the four kinds of weather, meaning a diverse movepool is built-in for it's gimmick) but it happens more to some types then others. Electric, Grass and Fire Pokemon still seem to get the worst of it, especially Electric, but even most of these new Pokemon in these types still get a viable coverage move or two like Overheat on Zebstrika or Dark Pulse on Pyroar. A lot of Gen 1/2 Pokemon in these types don't even have that in their Gen 6 incarnations, which is part of the reason why the Alolan forms are all of Gen 1 Pokemon so far- especially since the likes of Raichu and Ninetails are some of the biggest victims of this in the past.

See also my complaints earlier in this thread (or was it the main Pokemon thread?) about Kingler's lackluster movepool.
Honestly, I wish Game Freak would focus on the Pokemon for a bit. There's no reason to not give every Pokemon a half-decent movepool -- it's already patently obvious that not every Pokemon is competitively viable, but it would be nice if they were all fun to use and easy to integrate into a team.
Heliolisk does get Hyper Voice, Focus Blast, Dark Pulse, Grass Knot and Surf, which is pretty good coverage. The ORAS move tutors help even more.
