My neighbor guy has a sick set up dude, I know they're better quality then. Way more of a market for that kind of stuff then I think, instead of headphones or whatever. Anyhow he has these german speakers, and they're in a beatuiful wood case, that he paid $3500 for in 1970s bucks and almost got divorced over. They're incredible. I would love some sweet stuff like that but I'm just not at the point where I want to spend the money and effort getting into all of that either. Unfortunately probably I do need a hobby.

jesus yea thats a step above. i dont have great speakers, theyre probably my limitation. i just have these polk bookshelf numbers that are adequate but are lacking in bass. anyway, marantz are also great receivers but theyre n the somewhat pricier side.

i focus on receivers in these posts because thats where ive had the most trouble, i guess its varible between money wasting buffoons really

Anyhow speaking of like crazy tech relic audiophile poo poo, reading audio equipment reviews is the worst because some weirdo loving audiophile comes in talking about his set up like wtf. Give me a second I have to find what I'm talking about. It was in a review about a Yes album of all things.

all of this for a review of an LP for christssakes. This is why I don't get too into the hobby because I do not want to have to interact with that right there.

honestly when reviews start talking about jitter and soundstage and other extremely obscure notions like that, i listen because i know what theyre talking about just from having read articles and such. but im under no impression that these very obtuse metrics matter to 99.99% of the listening population

except soundstage. soundstage is the hill i will die on when it comes to quality

Put yo' face up hella close, like your nose touching the screen/book.
Stare intently.
Slowly back your face up from the screen/book while letting your eyes unfocus.
You will reach a point in distance where you see the 3D image.

That's what the books I got from the library taught me. It worked every time until my brain started allowing me to do it just by glancing at the image.

Great.

Never could see those. There were huge framed posters of ugly magic eye things at Walmart back in the day, when there was one Walmart in a 30 mile radius.

As a kid, closest thing I had, was this in a classroom: https://www.amazon.com/Dazzling-Mazes-Inventive-Solutions-Childrens/dp/0486249867

I don't know about the image but I'm guessing the one on the cover of the tape is just something simple to draw people in.

For magic eyes, I look at the pattern and cross my eyes, then slowly start to uncross (or relax) them until the columns of the pattern overlap. That's usually when it snaps into view for me. It took me years to figure it out. Same works for stereoscopic images. Cross your eyes, and slowly uncross them until two images overlap and you get a 3D one in the center.

Hope that makes sense.

What's nice bout learning how to see magic eye and stereoscopic images like this is that you can use it to do "spot the difference" games or to quickly find differences in 2 documents. Put them side-by-side and do the eye thing and any differences between them will be semi-transparent or flicker.

Magic Eye pictures were the best, as a kid they just seemed like pure magic.

Plus once I had got the knack of doing it instantly I would always get a kick out of looking for the patterns in random things like chainlink fences or wallpaper.

edit:

My favourite phone was the Motorola A1000.

Got it in early 2005. 3G, video calling capability, expandable memory up to 1gb and had a fairly thriving development scene.

I even obtained a version of Tom Tom (gps navigation software) for it, which worked perfectly with 3d rendering of the view and voice navigation, used it navigate halfway around Australia. Was my primary phone for 4 years until the battery started giving out.

The craziest phone I've ever owned was this bastard:

The picture pretty much says it all. That screen res, 162 X 132 pixels.

Still got a kick out of the fact it could make video calls though.

Full on porn. We did have a section that was Russ Myers movies, Fritz the Cat, and basic soft core porn. However, thanks to the 80s and 90s, the horror and action section had plenty of B movies that had lots of nudity and sex. Lots of women in prison movies for some reason.

Ahh the old top loaders. Some had fancy wired remotes but the cords were only 8 inches long.

Growing up in the 80s we had a VCR (I think it was either a Panasonic or a JVC) with a stick-like remote that snapped into the front of the unit and doubled as a front panel / integrated controls.

I wish I could find a picture of it because it seems like a ridiculously good idea and I wish all my stupid remotes today snapped into their respective units so I didn't have to have a pile of them lined up on the coffee table of each room with an A/V setup.

This was after we were moving sites and switching from CRT's to LCD's (2010). It was 2 of us moving those from different spots into that one room, approx 4 monitors at a time on a wheelie trolley...and then the same again down a flight of steps and into a giant bin.

And this was another item I found during the same move, it's a real shame we couldn't find the ISA cards that went with them.

As far as DVD previews, I dunno if it was player limitations or hard-coded into the DVD, but IIRC, back in the day you couldn't skip trailers on DVDs which was annoying as gently caress.

Part of the DVD specification is that you (the DVD manufacturer) can mark parts of the video as non-skippable, so a standards-compliant DVD player won't let you fast forward through them. Often used for things like the anti-piracy warning, and abused by some manufacturers to force you to watch trailers/ads. I don't understand this cognitive dissonance. The leadership of so many media companies are stuck in the old ways where they got to decide what consumers wanted. It used to be that pirated movies were terrible quality so people would put up with stupid bullshit because they were getting the best quality picture. Nowadays I could run down to Walmart or Best Buy or wherever to buy the latest bluray and deal with a bunch of annoying poo poo or I can just start a 1080p download, make dinner and then I'm ready to watch a movie. Piracy will exist as long as it's more accessible and less intrusive than what studios offer.

Gabe Newell (Valve Software, Steam) said that piracy is a service problem. Basically he thought that as long as you offered a good user experience, people would be willing to pay a reasonable price for it rather than pirate it for free. For the most part I would say he was right given the success that Steam has had as a digital distribution system, and how VOD services like Netflix have done. I mean, I could go torrent some movie but I would much rather watch it on Netflix because that is easier. I could pirate a game, but I would rather buy it on Steam than have to mess with cracks or not being able to play online.

edit: Wanted to add, piracy will probably never go away. There are some people who will always do it for free no matter how what the convenience level is. Some people do it for the fun. Content producers and distributors need to understand that and do their best to accommodate paying customers instead of punishing them.

Just like Mama used to make it!
I have a HUGE MP3 collection that started in 1997 and has been added to using newsgroups, Napster, Kazza, D++, eMule, FTP, torrents, etc.

Now I hardly listen to them because it's easier to just pay $10 a month for Google Music or Spotify. No more loading up my phone and trying to figure out what music I may be in the mood for. What really did it for me is the fact that I can play a certain song or full album of my choosing. LastFM and Pandora never let you do that, at least in the past.

I know this does not benefit the artist because they get paid next to nothing for streaming but I'm also not pirating anymore.

While we are kinda on subject, why do radio stations still pretend to take requests? Do you really think we believe that someone in TYOOL 2016 would make an actual phone call and ask them to play the same AC/DC song that's on a 48 hour rotation?
