every cavalry skirmisher does incredibly piddly damage. spider archers are okay because they have poison and so can just ride around potshotting big melee threats, but that's about it, and the greenskins aren't exactly starving for good units so even they don't' get used.

Yeah, and the limited ammunition really takes away their capacity for any abuse on the fringes of play. They're really only good for forcing (or tricking, as it may be) your opponent to react by wasting units to chase them down.

Yukitsu posted:I limit them when I run these because they cause matches where some asshat runs around in circles for 20 minutes. Eh, I've played a decent amount of multiplayer and the only thing I've seen like that (and didn't fall flat on its face) was steam tank and gyro spam. I also like to occasionally bring 3 or 4 wolf rider archers to run interference so I may be a bit personally biased. It's up to Mukip in the end though and whatever he decides is fine with me.

I wish there was a better anti-cavalry aspect to Empire. I went against a doom stack of Brettonians and their grail knights and knights of the realm hosed my halberdiers up something awful.

We have 16 players now so I'm going to start early. Could still use some backups if case somebody pulls out, though. Rules are as follows: Funds and unit size: Large Timer:20 minutes. No stalling or evasive behaviour for the sake of achieving a draw. Map: Karak Azgal for the first match. The loser decides what map to play in subsequent rounds. Best out of three matches to decide the winner of each round. Post the replay and/or send them to me at muukip@googlemail.com House rules: *No more than one healing item on the same character *Max 3 heroes including your lord. *No corner camping *Max one summon creature spell per army First round matchups will be: Mukip (http://steamcommunity.com/id/Muukip) - Kaza42 - 420 Gank Mid Captain Beans - I should probably have required people to post their steam games names, but . Post 'em or PM me and I'll update the list so that you can organize your matches. The winner of Mukip's Grand Tournament will have earned an incredible prize: A drawing of a cup (you can imagine it is a as Champions Cup if you like) in addition to a bonus .gif of an amusing dog that I once downloaded onto my hard drive. The runner-up will get a consolation prize: a highly artistic drawing of a quadrilateral plane. Mukip fucked around with this message at 22:43 on Aug 16, 2016 |

fnordcircle posted:Gonna give this a try but I do miss having some sort of vanguard archer unit like Ungor Raiders. Thanks! The way I use steam tanks is as flank anchors who can take a hell of a lot of punishment and bog down most things they'll run into unless they all have armour-piercing bonuses. If they get engaged then then can almost definitely survive and do lots of damage against big clumps of enemies and you can win the rest of the battle while they're occupied with the tank; if they don't get engaged, then you can roll them into flanking positions close to the enemy infantry masses at the front line and fire point-blank cannonballs and steam into the mass and rack up kills. They're super-reliable in my experience. As for Empire versus Bretonnia, I've only got campaign experience to draw on and not multiplayer or whatever but I had some good success using spearmen with shields as a core component of any army fighting Bretonnians. The shield gives some protection against the masses of peasant archers and the anti-large bonuses help with the cavalry. John Charity Spring fucked around with this message at 09:39 on Aug 12, 2016 |

Hmm, Steam Tanks as flank anchors sounds like a really good idea for the Chaos invasion. Toss them ahead of your cavalry wings to catch Chaos Knight charges with their insane armor, then shoot them to pieces with Handgunners or counter-charge with your cavalry... Can they mess up Giants and other monsters like Great Cannons though, is what I'd like to know.

They don't do as much to giants as Great Cannons do just because they're only firing one cannonball at once. They function exactly like you think against Chaos Knights though. Great for neutralising any kind of heavy cavalry - you can even counter-charge your spearmen/halberdiers into the engaged cavalry once the tank is surrounded.

Deified Data posted:Is VH fun with Dwarfs or do you just keep restarting until you get a save where Grimgor doesn't rush you? Killing full stack + Waaagh Grimgor is perfectly doable as Dwarfs on VH. It's much easier if you can swing the engagement to happen on your terms (Underway interception is always favourite, or tricking him into marching close to Karaz a Karak and jumping him supported by the garrison) but the important thing is not to mess around tearing down and replacing barracks buildings and min-maxing your stack for a theoretically optimal economic build. Recruit as many warriors as you can, upgrade the barracks ASAP and then recruit as many quarrelers as you can. Recruit another lord and have him recruit as many troops as he can. You'll have time to economise once Grimgor is taking a nap beside the ruins of his starting Doom Diver.

And yeah, killing that Doom Diver is key. Grimgor might be the Lu Bu of Total Warhammer, but that Doom Diver will rack up more kills than any other Greenskin unit you care to name just because it's accurate, long-ranged, and insta-gibs dwarves on impact.

Is this going to be single elimination or the more usual best of three match-ups? I feel the later is better, specially if you pair it with a "can't repeat factions against the same opponent" rule and make it best of five for the semi-finals and finals.
