It was a little jarring how she just vanished and no one seemed to really care (esp after some other kid vanished!) but whatever she was a square

She was a chubby goody-two-shoes cockblock, the whole town was probably glad she's gone.

There was probably a collective nod in the town to not mention her disappearance, lest somebody actually start looking.

except her disappearance was the catalyst that got nancy involved in the plot, and led to her working with the creepy kid

you can argue that ultimately the nancy subplot didn't contribute to the conclusion of the story, but it was an enjoyable bit of storytelling

I just mean like the town's response was basically nonexistent, a week after Will just disappeared. For a small town in the 80s that seems odd is all.

I didn't dislike it or anything.

They did a candle light vigil at the school and had lots of volunteers looking for Will. They claimed Barb had just run away and faked some evidence

Right that's why it was weird that the Barb disappearance was taken at face value and no one was going 'idk seems connected to me Sheriff should I be worried for my kids here did she actually run away or... ?' Like I don't even remember her parents really being upset or anything?

just sayin' it felt a little odd is all geez. I still liked the show but I was definitely thinking at one point 'haha no one gives a poo poo about Barb' before I ever saw any discussion about it online

I think Barb was also serving to let them upend the classic horror trope that "party kids that have sex are killed by the monster." Even Steve's rear end in a top hat friends are left unscathed, and the only teen killed by the monster is the goody-two-shoes.

I think this is why Stranger Things works so well--it isn't predictable at all, despite being seeped in nostalgia. The RLM guys talk about this, and I think that's where the line between homage and rip-off lies. The story itself still twists and turns and surprises a contemporary audience, because it doesn't rely on tropes, stereotypes and references for its plot beats, and acknowledges cliches while also subverting them.

I really dug the final "hey what the hell, this adventure was only 10 hours long and the post-climax resolution was unsatisfying and what about all those plot devices that made no sense" voice-of-the-audience scene.

Like, how was Will communicating with the lights?

They kinda explained that - the worlds were connected by a worm hole (opened by 11), which inherently created a massive electro-magnetic field. People taking any action in one world would affect the field, and manifest in the other world as an electric anomaly. That's why the monster walking around in the parallel world would cause electric appliances to freak out in the corresponding spots of the human world.

Well, I guess it's problematic since Will was apparently immobilized in his hideout and too weak to do anything... Maybe they are trying to imply that will is somehow intuitively connected to the Upside-Out, similar to 11? And therefore can manipulate things in the world without actually physically moving? After all, he's "different", and he ended up tied to the Upside-Down even after being saved from it...

I think he wasn't always immobilized. At the point they found him he would have been dehydrated pretty bad.

He wasn't immobilized until fairly late - the whole scene where Winona takes the axe to the wall is because he was just on the other side of the meat-window portal thing that appeared there.

Way to get hung up on nonsense that doesn't matter. Might as well ask what did the monster do with will right after he abducted him, or after he broke into his fort days later, or why a nailbat was more effective than a squad of people with submachine guns
