Well! It's a nice surprise to see another take on the Portugal LP, and I'll look forward to seeing the progress!

As to the use of Dona Maria Primeira, I agree that she is a weird choice, but not quite an offensively bad one.

I mean, it could be worse...it could be Sebastian.

Also, I think that the only AI quirk Maria has is that she has a higher degree of randomization to her behaviours, and consequently acts a bit insane because she does not behave consistently. What a few players have observed is that this means she tends to act friendlier than expected.

E: Just heard the comments about Guimarães. It was considered a pre-Reconquista capital of Portugal (at the time Portugal was a county and not a nation) but the Battle of São Mamede, which officially split Portugal from the Kingdom of Leon, also took place in the immediate vicinity. It is kind of an omission, but not a significant one in light of some other more glaring liberties that Firaxis takes with regards to human history...like their concept for Polynesia.

So... exactly like the other AI's then? With one exception who is always reliable.

I guess it's because every AI has a ten point scale of how likely the are to do a thing with a 2 point variation up or down for a bit of randomness (with the exception of Ghandi's 12 in making and using nukes). So either Maria is 5 all the way down so the random variations are bigger in deciding her actions, or she has a 3 point variation instead.

Subutai:

quote:

He directed more than twenty campaigns in which he conquered thirty-two nations and won sixty-five pitched battles, during which he conquered or overran more territory than any other commander in history. He gained victory by means of imaginative and sophisticated strategies and routinely coordinated movements of armies that were hundreds of kilometers away from each other. He is also remembered for devising the campaign that destroyed the armies of Hungary and Poland within two days of each other, by forces over five hundred kilometers apart.

The Portuguese and the Dutch have been opponents in one major war, as Portugal was once considered the lesser partner in a union under the Spanish in the time of the Eighty Years' War.

Consequently, the Dutch East India Company and the Portuguese Empire were often engaged in battle, with the Portuguese removing the Dutch from Brazil and Angola, and the Dutch removing the Portuguese from parts of India, the Philippines, and Malacca, among other parts of eastern Asia.

The Portuguese effectively bowed out of the war after revolting against Spain, and the cessation of Dutch-Portuguese hostilities were the first step in a larger conclusion to the Eighty Years' war.

Also, Ogedai was Genghis' third son, not his first-as his older brothers spent so much time fighting with each other than Genghis declared that neither of them would get to be Khagan. For their part they accepted it, as neither one wanted the other to have the authority and both believed that if it came down to it they could get Ogedai-who was known to be a drunk even by the standards of the Mongols-to do what they wanted. You also confused Attila's death with Genghis', as the Secret History of the Mongols says nothing about how he died; while a fatal nosebleed was definitely how Attila did. Subedai did indeed serve both of them, although the conquest of Russia was at Ogedai's behest (And by that point Subedai had grown so old and fat that he could not ride a horse at all and had to be towed around in an iron chariot).

So I only just noticed how bad the framerate is in the latest batch of episodes. I'm so sorry everyone, it seemed fine on my end when recording. The game was fine, the preview in OBS was fine I've got no idea what's wrong. A couple of them even cut off like thirty seconds before they're supposed to and there's nothing I can do about it. Very frustrating. :(

Okay! We got multiplayer working without any big technical hiccups. Large amount of framedropping on my end though (15%) that we determined through a lot of testing post stream was partially multiplayer Civ bottlenecking my CPU and partially Twitch's fault. So question about AI estimates of your military strength: do they appropriately discount armies and navies? For example, would the Netherlands realize that naval strength isn't especially threatening to it or does it just seem to lump all military units together?

Pretty sure it just uses the military score, which is a really awful way of judging military strength for a variety of reasons.
