So.

I play entirely too much Civ. Civ 5 is probably my favourite game of all time and Civ 6 is looking all set to replace it when it comes out later this year. I talk about Civ a lot. I bother my friends about Civ. I've done several screenshot LP's of Civ 5 in the past. (Shhh. We don't talk about how those all fizzled out and went nowhere. :ssh:)

Anyway! I've figured if I'm going to play that much loving Civ I might as well put at least some of it on camera and so now here's a thread for that! Any Civ stuff I do I'll be putting it in here. For now that'll mostly be Civ 5: Brave New World but that'll probably change the nanosecond Steam lets me launch Civ 6. Maybe I'll throw in some rounds of the older games too here and there but I don't like them as much so don't expect it too often.

Art and doodles will relating to Civ will also get posted here since you folks seem to have gotten a kick out of that in the past!

First up: I'm joined by Alkydere to show you guys the sheer absurdity of The Dutch in Civ 5 if you give them the right terrain:

I'm pleasantly surprised that Japan just wanted to friend you immediately. Even in actual history they got a lot from the Dutch, and during its closed-country phase the Dutch were the only European country allowed to conduct trade with them, albeit at a specific location.

It's otherwise pretty unlike Civ!Japan, of course, but they are kinda far away from you.

Didn't Japan also have some trade with the Portuguese? Japanese even has loanwords from Portuguese

Wait. On Episode 3? I double and triple checked all the audio for that. If I play the video back it sounds okay both on Youtube and on my local.

Goddamnit.

Is anyone else having this problem? If you could tell me now before I get around to mixing tonight's audio and it's too late to change it would be a big help.

Yep, lots of trade and loanwords from the Dutch and the Portuguese. The Dutch contributed a lot of science/medical words (as did the Germans, later) and the Portuguese contributed a lot of terms related to Catholicism and stuff you'd trade, like fabrics, glass, beads, etc. :eng101:

In fact, the study of Western science and culture during the Edo period (while Japan was closed off) was known as "Dutch Studies," as the Dutch were pretty much the only Western power who were allowed to trade with Japan at the time.

I would not.

Only watched the first episode so far, and I definitely appreciate when you go ahead and explain something despite your co-commentator saying the game is so old everybody knows things. For example, the polders being buildable on desert + river = floodplain, not all deserts.

Your audio was pretty quiet.

Yes, half of the fun of Civ is the passive-aggressive multiplayer. There needs to be videos of people dicking each other over by strategic city placement.

The other major Portuguese influence on the language has to do with cooking. The Japanese word for bread, "pan," is based on the Portuguese "pćo." The food "tempura" is also supposedly originally based on the phrase "temperado" which means "seasoned" in Portuguese, though Wikipedia claims that this is more rumour and that the original phrase may have been Latin. Either way, the food culture of Portugal did bear some impact on the language.

I've heard "tempura" comes from the Portuguese word for "temperance," such as that practiced during Lent. That could explain why tempura is strictly fried fish and vegetables.

But yes, there's a touch of Portuguese in Japan's food vocab as well. Little snacks and candies come to mind, like the rock-candy konpeitou and the tiny bouro cookies--stuff that would have stayed edible/tradeable on a sea voyage.

Sorry--I have degrees in both Japanese and linguistics with a special interest in loanwords and have taught myself some Portuguese to boot. I'll shut up now. :downs:

EditL Oh. I'd geuuess denouncing someone before you war them redudes your unreliability in the eyes of the AI. since it figures "well, they didn't declare out of no-where, you ony went to war with a declared 'enemy'.
or it figures 'Well, they haven't denounced me, so they must be friends!'

And did you ever explain why bananas are the worst tile?

Capitol: A building or complex of buildings in which any legislature meets.
Capital: A city designated as a legislative seat by the government or some other authority, often the city in which the government is located; otherwise the most important city within a country or a subdivision of it.

Veloxyll posted:

And did you ever explain why bananas are the worst tile?

I don't think we did, at least not in detail. But the issue is the tile bonus the jungles give you vs. the tile bonus the plantation gives you.

Bananas only appear on jungle tiles. Jungle tiles are 2 food naturally, no matter what's underneath as the Jungle over-writes the base bonus, the only thing it keeps are the hill defensive/vision modifiers and movement modifiers (kinda-sorta over-written by the Jungle stuff but if you have a bonus to moving on hills you can walk through jungle hills faster than flatland jungle tiles). Bananas give +1 food, another +1 if you have a granary. That's four food for an unimproved tile. Later on you can also build the university which gives +2 science for every jungle tile within a city's workable boundaries. So that's 4 food and 2 science on a single tile, basically a late-game grassland farm with 2 free science. And beakers are the god-tier resource.

However if you have workers automated they'll "improve" the tile by chopping down the jungle and building a plantation. Likewise if you don't automate your workers and have AI suggestions turned on (what I do, even if I ignore them 99% of the time they can be a helpful reminder to connect a resource) there's a "build a plantation here!" tool tip taunting you the entire game.

If you do improve the banana tile you get 2 food from the grassland (the jungle overwrites what's underneath, but it's pretty much guaranteed to be a grassland, or grassland hill, beneath), 1 food from the banana, 1 food from the granary....and later on 1 food from the plantation due to a very late game tech bonus that gives all plantations +1 food. So you get 5 food...which isn't bad, but the extra food isn't more valuable than the two science since that's only half a population point's worth of food (each pop point costs 2 food until/unless you take the Freedom tenent that makes specialist cost half).

So in short: Banana tiles are actually pretty damned awesome if you don't improve them. Improving them actually downgrades them to merely "very good" tiles.

Also, wild bananas are a thing (plantains are only one specific type of banana, not the term for wild bananas), they just don't really look like the banana icon.

Don't Banana Plantations also reduce production by 1? Obviously this doesn't matter for Grassland tiles, but if that Jungle is on a 1F/1P Plains, then it basically becomes a 1F Tundra, which sucks.

It's not the Plantations but the resource itself. Even unimproved it still gives the -1 Production.

That's because we're back to the original recording. I haven't found any way to edit it in order to adjust the volume so it's this or I delete the original commentary entirely and record in post. (Which I'd feel pretty bad about doing to the whole LP because it would mean just cutting Alkydere out entirely.)
