I guess people were worried that you had to have seen all the previous movies to know what was going on and that you had to know who Mark Ruffalo was supposed to be after Norton pulled out.

Plus, Norton was the only "big name" at the time. RDJ was on the rebound, but hadn't earned his golden boy status yet. So, people were predicting doom when "the one big star" pulled out and that it was going to be overstuffed with required background info.

Jesus Christ. I think I brought it before in this thread or one like it but, honest to god, I have never ever in my life, prior to this year, seen "editing" used in film criticism. Like at all. I watch a ton of movies and read a lot reviews and message boards but for some reason 2016 is like the year of lovely editing.

Can anyone name a film prior to 2014 where editing was ever even mentioned, brought up or noticed at all? For good or for ill? Aside from porno movies I mean. Like, in ANY way? I can't. The gently caress is going on in the god damned editing room these days? You'd think it'd get easier with not having to physically cut out strips of film and poo poo like that but it seems like suddenly every loving film on the planet was edited poorly.

The Academy has awarded an Oscar for film editing since 1934. It's not exactly a new thing. It may not be as discussed among non-critical film viewers, but that doesn't mean it wasn't discussed.

This is, editing is only noticeable when it's really bad. I watch Green Lantern the other day, and honestly, It's probably better assembled than Suicide Squad. At least there's a clear arc where you see Hal go from douchebag to hero and the Corps accept him. It isn't suddenly "oh i guess we're all friends now?".

The whole "this will sink Marvel Studios" prediction is also less of a thing now because they are Disney. It was a bigger concern when the studio was just an offshoot of Marvel and it was gambling on its first bunch of movies to pay off a gigantic loan hanging over its head.

He apparently complained that press at the Iron Man premiere were allowed to take two sodas instead of one. He had also showed up to that premiere in disguise wearing a fake moustache

He also fought against providing food at the premiere and eventually had Subway sandwiches and a cash bar at the Red Carpet event.

They could make a movie about Perlmutter as a sequel to "A Beautiful Mind" and I would watch it opening night. He's on the razor's edge between genius and insane.

I don't know anything about the films Bilal made before Immortal. But I have read the Nikopol Trilogy, and it's big on imagery for it's own sake and not much on any kind of coherent plot (which combines mythological gods, dystopian cyberpunk and messages sent through time). It would probably be easier to adapt The Incal to film. So you let a French comic book artist adapt his own book to film, and it's a sprawling mess of a three-volume series...yeah.

The CGI, though, I don't know.

I've heard there's been a lot less conflict in the marvel studios division now that Perlmutter doesn't have the decision making power he used to have. Perlmutter being such a cheapskate was why so many of the actors were threatening to leave.

It sounds like trying to create a Marvel cinematic universe within a single film. That definitely wouldn't have been much better than Trank's vision, whatever that was before the studio bulldozed it.

Omnomnomnivore

I'm swiftly moving toward a solution which pleases nobody! YEAGGH!
Honestly this shared universe thing doesn't seem that hard:
  1. Every movie you make is a sequel, so you can't blatantly contradict what came before. If your villain killed the president in the last movie, he can't be back with no explanation in your new movie. Gentle retcons are OK.
  2. Stopping your current movie to have a commercial for your next one sucks, don't do this. It sucks when Marvel does it and it sucks when DC does it. Stick it after the credits if you must.
  3. On the other hand, if your current movie can use an existing character in an organic way, you reward people who are paying attention. Think Falcon in Ant-Man, or even when Garry Shandling showed up in Winter Soldier.
  4. There have been lots of team-up movies. It's not some impossible feat. But they usually don't give elaborate backstories or flashbacks to everyone on the team because there's no time. Even in something as perfect as Seven Samurai, only like 3 of those guys have more than one or two character traits.
  5. Other than that, just try to make good movies!

Have minor consistent things through the movies. Like have the President be the same person, or the News anchor is the same also helps.

Man of Steel and Batman V Superman feel like they're in the same universe, but this is more because BvS is a sequel to MoS more than anything. Though I did not feel that SS and BvS are in the same universe though.

All the Marvel films though, even Guardians and Thor, feel like they exist in the same place.

What has helped that for me is that, particularly in the early movies, they left space for other things to be going on. There isn't one event that started everything (though those different starting places now all orbit around the Avengers because they're out and public and such) and that means that even when the focus was on Iron man something odd could be out in New Mexico, some kid was abducted 20 years earlier and nobody cared, and a WW2 hero was just waiting to be found. And some folks in various boroughs of New York keeping a low profile.

Heck, the one line from AoS where Coulson asks Sif about blue aliens and she has a whole laundry list of possibilities. WE knew it'd be Kree because of the comics, but it made the universe feel a lot bigger.

An important addition to the list is that character development and personality through actions and dialog is more important than explaining backstory. And it's way more important than re-explaining back story.
I saw the first few minutes of BvS, and all I got was old Wayne family murder stories. I saw Civil War, and felt a huge sense of relief when Parker have his into without mentioning Uncle Ben or power/responsibility.

I know it's dumb responding to an Aphrodite post, but tribes in the Amazon with minimal contact with the outside world know about Bruce Wayne's dumb dead parents. Tony Stark's dead parents took a backseat in all the Iron Man movies, the character himself being at best a B-list hero before IM1, and it wasn't until years after the movie that the comics added the archetypal "Secret Origins" story that expanded on Howard and Maria's deaths; even then, the comics and cinematic versions differ greatly.
