Did I hear plane parachute?

http://www.n-tv.de/panorama/Bruchpilot-muss-in-Baumkrone-uebernachten-article18428356.html

This happened yesterday in Germany.
An ultralight plane crashed into a tree and got stuck at 100 feet.
It took 13 hours to rescue the pilot. The plane was secured with ropes to keep it from falling.

They felled the tree it was stuck in, it impacted the ground and caught fire.

Does Germany have a different ultralight definition than the US?

Not too stupid

Rah! posted:

It looks really bad, and could have been way worse, but no one was injured. The skydivers were fine, one plane landed like normal, and the plane that lost a wing deployed a parachute and made it to the ground safely as well.

Uh, pretty sure the pilot bailed out. An air frame parachute is not very useful to something that is also on fire. Plus this is waaay out of the scope of an air frame parachute and would just be luck if it deployed successfully.

Budgie posted:

Well they all had parachutes on, I think it's a requirement that even the pilots of skydiving planes wear parachutes even if they don't plan to jump.

It is. They need to have an emergency chute.

Edit: Yeah, pilot bailed, "We chased the airplane to see if the pilot got out. Once I saw the pilot bail out, I made sure he was going to open the parachute because he was a student."

Having a made-up safety story is Management 101 in a lot of places. Every retail job I had years ago each had managers with a story about how their close friend/associate got blown up/mangled because... they just... weren't careful enough!

:negative:

What about those of us that aren't in Management that have actually seen people lose digits/have limbs crushed because they ignored the warnings on their machines about keeping guards in place during operation?

One guy lost some fingers on his left hand because he didn't wait for the machine tools to finish coming to a stop before sticking his hand into the machining area with an air nozzle intending to blow stubborn chips out of said area after running a part through it.

Another guy has everything below the left elbow get mangled because he didn't respect the machine that scores the raw stock material before it is fed to the extruder.

Yet another guy got caught up in a cloud of steam when the vulcanizer (think big pressure cooker) blew a seal while he was loading extruded parts into the rails that would go into the vulcanizer the next day (this last one was less about ignoring safety warnings and was more on the company, but still, bad poo poo happens in real life).

All of these guys survived, but were mangled by on-the-job equipment safety issues. Not all stories are bullshit.

It's always the same thing. Take girlfriend/friend shooting for the first time, don't show them how to shoot *giggle* here a massive firearm, don't worry it won't kick... BOOM *LOL* weapon goes flying possibly killing someone, person never fires a weapon again, is afraid of guns for life, never touches a firearm again.

People are assholes, and its no wonder there are so many firearms accidents. I'm glad in Canada we are forced to take classes and tests even if just to piss off people who think safety is for stupid people.

I was on a range with a CBSA agent (Canadian Border Services Agencies) and his wife among other people. Most of us were military except them and one of my friends. This guy's wife obviously didn't want to be there, and was haphazardly firing her .22 at targets while he messed around with his weapon. Whenever she stopped firing she would turn and "laze" (point her rifle) the whole firing line with a loaded weapon. Like holy poo poo man, maybe not bring your wife shooting if you're not going to show her basic range safety and supervise her?

Before I ever took my girlfriend shooting real guns, I gave her an airsoft gun and used it to demonstrate all the basics behind how a pistol operates and how to properly line up a front and rear sight. When I took her shooting for the first time, I picked out the real version of the same gun I taught her on (so she'd find it familiar) and she only loaded and fired a single round the first time. Then she fired 3 rounds, all while trying to aim at the target properly. It was only after that when she was allowed to load a magazine and fire the whole thing by herself.

She ended up having a really fun time and hitting the target pretty well for a complete beginner. I think anyone of almost any age can be safely taught how to shoot and enjoy it as long as you do it right. Make sure they respect the gun's ability to kill whatever they point it at so they don't do something stupid, but also divorce them of any "This is a horrible thing designed only to hurt people and it's scary to hold" notions they may have beforehand that will make them shrink away from it.

Guys guys I have an OSHA story.

So the other week we moved to a new office. Then this guy came in and told us what all the knobs on our office chairs are for. He also told us how to set our desk height and what's the most ergonomic position to work in. Then he left, and I moved my chair back into 'lazy as gently caress' mode.

Haven't had anything that egregious, but we have had the CFO try to sneakily replace our keyboards with "ergonomic" ones that wreck our muscle memory for typing and "better" chairs that have less padding and range of motion.

The most convincing argument I ever heard from a pro-gun person for "why guns shouldn't be outlawed" is that if guns were outlawed and anyone tried to take them from him, he would murder them, and he's someone who is relatively stable. Then multiply that across all gun owners and that would really suck.

Working as a gunsmith, had a hard rule that no live ammunition was allowed in the work area ever for obvious reasons.

Coworker decided he needed to use some .22lr dummy rounds to test magazine feeding. All the dummy rounds out were chewed up to poo poo and he didn't want to open a brand new pack, so he went and grabbed a couple live rounds from his car, tested the feeding, and then forgot about them.

Went on to test trigger reset and *BLAM*.

Missed my head by about a foot.

He was escorted out the door about 60 seconds later and politely reminded never to return, we'll send your things to you thank you very much.

Flash forward several years, working IT: We have floor runners for some cable runs at the end of a row of cubes where there's a 3 foot walkway in between the cubes and the wall, for safety reasons all cables need to be run through the floor runners. Coworker replaces a run of CAT5, decides he's too busy to stuff it into the floor runner, and fucks back off to the IT Lab. Not an hour later someone trips over the run of cable and sprains their freaking wrist.

Safety rules exist for a reason, folks.

I know it's a losing proposition to ever discuss the feasibility of one of this guy's insane concepts, but this one always struck me as particularly dumb because...like...why does it need to have the ejecting capsule in the first place? Why not just make the parachutes 20% bigger and save the whole plane?

One note is that older electrical systems did not have a hot and a neutral that was referenced to ground. So to get shocked under normal circumstances you would need to touch both wires at once. With a ground-referenced system you can be grounded and just touch the hot wire and get a shock.

I believe the problem was that on systems that were completely ungrounded, static electricity could build up on the lines and potentially damage equipment. Also if a power line falls down and there's a return path to ground, it can detect that improper current path and cause the lines to trip off.
