Phanatic posted:Private vs. not-private prisons is entirely orthogonal to that. One of the chief opponents of marijuana legalization in California was the prison guard union...because they had a financial interest in keeping as many people in jail as possible. The prison guard union also was a huge supporter of California's three-strikes legislation that wound up vastly increasing the prison population. And it funded opposition to Proposition 5, which was a diversion program to keep non-violent drug offenders out of prison. Private prisons might be a stupid idea, but it's an issue that's not as important as huge incarceration rates and the laws that make purely consensual activities illegal in the first place. Yeah so you're saying it doesn't matter at all that we've created massive corporate entities with a financial interest in keeping people in jail because we also have massive non-corporate interests that do the same? Brilliant. e: I mean I take the point that that poo poo's not going away automatically if we get rid of private prisons tomorrow, but if you think they're not part of the problem you're out of your goddamn mind. When I lived in a really skeezy part of London I saw this a couple of times. The licensing agency will sell the car at auction to recover the unpaid tax and fees. Gorblimey bloke here decides to trash the car to make it worthless, and undriveable so that they have to spend even more money to recover it. Money, of course, contributed by people who did actually pay their road tax. This man is a selfish oval office, is what I'm getting at.

Heard some freude on the radio today: The host was explaining how he had some time planned with his younger son at some point in the near future, but it turns out the weather is going to be bad so it's bound to be "Just him and me and some movies", and how that might be painful. The reason? Being a younger kid who didn't grow up with them, the guy's kid simply doesn't enjoy the 80s movies he's seen. Didn't like Slap Shot, didn't like Lampoon's Vacation, didn't like Ghostbusters. People realizing that that their cherished childhood era of movies isn't the next generation's will always be schadenfreude for me.

Judge recommends criminal prosecution of Arpaio in racial profiling case PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) - A federal judge on Friday issued a decision recommending criminal prosecution of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for contempt of court in a racial profiling case. Arpaio and his second-in-command were found in civil contempt two months ago for intentionally ignoring an order to stop their immigration patrols. They now face the possibility of a criminal contempt case that could result in fines or jail time. Arpaio and Jerry Sheridan were previously found to have made several intentional misstatements of facts last year during their contempt hearings. The two deliberately misstated facts when denying that the agency had conducted an investigation of the judge, U.S. District Judge Murray Snow found. http://www.azfamily.com/story/32801428/judge-recommends-criminal-prosecution-of-arpaio-in-racial-profiling-case

Self schadenfreude time, this happened many years ago I work for a state agency, and have a permanently assigned work vehicle. So my van is in the shop one week, getting some warranty recall work done on the transmission. The only loaner van available has a large wheelchair loading thing on top, which means I have to park it in the open lot a block away and not in the parking garage. So naturally a few days later, after a long day on the road, I pulled straight into the parking garage and shattered the fiberglass shell of the wheelchair loader. I spent the next month getting estimates and filling out paperwork.
