The real key to sports success is to be middle-to-upper-middle class. That is the group most over-represented in most sports because they have the mix of time, energy and capability to be a sports star while it also remains one of the more appealing career paths. Middle-to-upper class people of all types are underrepresented in sports. Even the NBA which has a reputation for being a step-up for lower-class inner-city kids is predominantly middle/upper-middle class. The numbers I remember offhand are something like 30% of black players and less than 5% of white players are from low-income and dropping by the year. It's also unfortunate that we keep viewing sports as a leg up for the lower class because it unfortunately is only a few rare success stories who manage to hit that for obvious reasons. When you can't afford good food or exercise and live in a lovely part of the city it's a lot harder to put in the time and effort necessary to become a success.
