I find this one is easy to see if you just try not to focus on any individual part, it's even easier to see when zoomed out

The typical way to demonstrate it is to cover up the diffuse edge of the shadow with your finger or something similar.

But as soon as you take your finger away, they start looking different again.

yeah if you kind of unfocus your eyes and look at the two squares indirectly, the illusion disappears.

Perfect color comprehension is really a curse. My dad was a printer and did validation by eye constantly, and he was always silently frustrated about how everybody's TV was set up wrong.

To tie in back into OSHA, my brother considered following in his footsteps and took a printing vocational in high school. Got stoned one day, reached into a running press to clear a jam, and it ate his hand. Broke most of the bones in his fingers but somehow left the growth plates, nerves, and tendons in tact so that he made a full recovery without major surgery.

As someone that has done digital photography, the amount of people that don't bother to calibrate their monitor infuriates me.

That begs the question: Why are monitors set up like poo poo at the factory?

Also, what is a good way for an average person to figure out how to set up their screen properly?

It takes time to calibrate and that would kill margins on most low-mid range hardware, so they just set a default and call it a day. If you're lucky that default was based on a sampling of multiple panels rather than just "eh, that should work". If you're really lucky the standard deviation in their production is small enough that the default is "close enough" for most uses.

I was going to type up a big thing here, but I found this article which seems from a skim to cover it pretty well. http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/how-to-calibrate-your-monitor/

Eyeballing it with the built-in calibration wizards in each OS will get you good enough for most uses, assuming your eyeballs are reasonably average.

Because a correctly calibrated display looks neutral and doesn't pop out from other ones in the store. They are usually oversaturated, oversharpened, wayyyyy too blue and have all the manufacturer's proprietary bullshit "enhancers" on by default. Some monitors have presets for sRGB or such but they're usually way off or the gamut isn't even enough to show it.

My two dells looked completely different, until I noticed one was set to sRGB and one to 'game mode' which really pushed the saturation.
