Lowen SoDium posted:Does anyone remember Vivo? It was a very early streaming video player. Mostly used for porn in the 90's. Blocky, low res, buffering porn... I've mentioned this before in some thread, but I used it almost entirely for a pre-Youtube site from the late 90s called InterneTV that had a bunch of movie trailers and music videos on it. I actually thought that compared to Realplayer it looked better at the time. I still remember how Google Video used to be a thing prior to them taking up Youtube. Stuff that people uploaded a lot of times gave you the option of just, "Do you want to download this video to playback on a PSP, iPod, etc." and you could do that easily.

Prior to 10 years ago watching any video from an online source was usually a giant pain in the rear end. I have no nostalgia for that particular bit of history.

A-B testing has shown people can't tell the difference except when they can which is sometimes. Nobody can tell the difference for all works, and some people can't tell the difference for any works, but it's simply untrue to say that nobody can tell the difference for all works.

I know I can't tell the difference. I have $40 headphones. But if you're going to say A/B testing shows that most people can't tell the difference for most works, you do have to also recognize the A/B tests where the person could tell the difference.

In a home listening situation there's almost no benefit, but there's also almost no cost. A 4 tb hard drive is like $100 and holds, umm, let's see carry the one, a gently caress ton of music no matter the format.

Ok, to get off this retarded slapfight over literally someone's opinion on the aural capabilities of total strangers: Does any industry still use plotter printers? I remember as a kid we had one in the house for printing large-scale PCB layouts and poo poo. I can't find a picture, but I remember instead of ink cartridges it used these little ink pens, and would slot them out for each different color. It really looked like a robot drawing a picture, since the arm would move around and physically draw whatever was needed in one color, the arm would drop that color and pick up another one, etc. Blew my 8-year-old mind having a real live robot artist in the house.

Still, a decent quality mp3 is good enough for everything except super- audiophools so whatever. almost all file formats are updated over time, the jpeg standard's last update was in like 2012 and over the last 16 years there have been significant improvements the rapid avaliability of storage space and the relatively tiny size of pictures means that whatever changes and additions to png and jpeg werent really revolutionary. there's animated pngs now i guess?

Mortimer posted:http://www.npr.org/sections/therecord/2015/06/02/411473508/how-well-can-you-hear-audio-quality Lmao I got 0/6 on this I remember reading a long effort article by an electrical/audio engineer about how past certain bitrates it becomes moot because there comes a point where only one possible analog wave can fit the digital print or whatever. He explained it better than me obviously but his point was this: after a certain bitrate threshold they become impossible to distinguish because the device you're playing the music on actually outputs the same signal. I can't find it for the life of me because I don't know what to search. I did originally find it on these forums a few years ago and a bunch of audiophiles got stark raving mad about it. It was pretty great. E: Actually I think it may have been a video, not an article. Mak0rz has a new favorite as of 23:07 on Aug 24, 2016 |

Today I learned that there once existed an Xbox 360 HD port of Goldeneye 007 that was set to be released for purchase on the Xbox Live Arcade. And now i'm bummed I never got to play it. Goldeneye Source is one thing, but this was the entire game, not just multiplayer aspects of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRRuhviJGMQ

Mak0rz posted:Lmao I got 0/6 on this I think you mean the Shannon-Nyquist sampling theorem? It basically states that if you sample a signal at more than twice the frequency of it's highest-frequency component, you can recreate it perfectly. That doesn't entirely apply to lossy codecs, though. MP3 doesn't get its compression from lowering the sample rate (which will typically stay at the same 44kHz as the original source), but from a combination of more efficient but imprecise ways of describing the signal plus deliberately dropping information that human hearing ignores.
