funmanguy posted:In dota, iron branch is pretty much the most gold efficient item but you can't abuse it because you can only hold six things. So as you spend gold to make bigger items in dota they get much less efficient for what you receive. In league its the opposite, the cheap small items are inefficient while LoLs equivalent of Daedalus is very gold efficient, so having a very small advantage quickly snowballs into a bigger and bigger advantage as you complete more higher tier items. Dota has Divine Rapier which is more cost effective than the items that create it, just don't die with it.

No one picks the fort one (e: because it's no longer in the game, natch), but the teleport one is used a lot now. Often on more than one person per team. That cooldown is huge, though.

El Golden Goose posted:Why is it more efficient the more you spend? I've never played LoL so I don't understand this. LoL items are mostly stat sticks that gain more stats as you go up in tier always adding more than the sum of their parts. In Dota you typically pay for actives and slot efficiency. Instead of needing a slot for blink dagger or wards in league you get it built in for free (but 300 range and like 5m cd) and a dedicated ward slot. e: For perspective. Their blades of attack equiv is 350 g for 10 damage (35g:damage), their claymore equiv is 1300 gold for 40 damage (32.5g:damage). This isn't even recipe items. Blades of attack is 420g for 9 damage (~47g:damage), claymore is 1400g for 21 damage (~67g:damage) Kild fucked around with this message at 21:00 on Aug 24, 2016 |

LoL has a lot more actives than it used to and the current carry strat does involve working on multiple items at a time, but yeah the recipe costs in LoL are almost always lower than the value you acquire.

league is a lot like how dota used to be these days. initially it was just a pretty simple game but you can see how the complexity starts to creep in (stuff like denies becoming a mechanic, some of the later hero designs are much more complicated than early heroes like skeleton king.) their biggest issue, to me, is most their unwillingness to change the map and the general economy of the game. they make a lot of sweeping changes to the jungle and etc. in an attempt to make the pool more diverse but a lot of their issues just stem from fundamental imbalances in the game and they basically just keep shuffling things around. the most recent tower change we're talking about here is another in a long line of changes designed to get people to play matched up lanes like people prefer to do in solo q but is certainly not the first change they've made to this effect, and seeing how teams quickly realized you can just wait 5 minutes and then swap and rush down their top tower, this probably won't be the last change.

Classic rock is okay but when you listen to it every day on the radio for fifteen years and it's basically just the same 100 songs over and over sometimes you just wanna listen to something else additionally: with Redbull straight shutting down and WCA being filled with teams no one cares about, what are the odds Epicenter holds up

Just out of curiosity, do other esports have any equivalent of the open qualifiers? EG's case this year was pretty odd but the fact that an open qualifier team that could have technically just been 5 dudes got to third place is pretty amazing, and it's the sort of thing I sell Dota as an esport to people on. Wasn't TNC from the open qualifier too?

TNC, Secret and EG were all Open Qualifier teams. TNC only managed to qualify in the second open qualifier even. Think we'll see more teams dropping players after the deadline and risking the open qualifiers since EG and Secret proved that the open qualifier part at least really isn't that bad. (secret almost lost once but lol this incarnation of secret)

No idea on how the tournament is run, but the winner(s?) gets a spot in LCS which is, to my knowledge, basically a year-long regional qualifier.

emdash posted:here's something to distract us all for now: Riot has the occasional good idea, they also have bad ideas. Valve also has good ideas, and occasional bad ideas. It's just that Riot's bad ideas make their game a lot less fun to watch. Their good ideas make sure everybody gets at least some money just for participating so that kids thinking short term don't feel a need to throw games just make sure their toiling in the qualifiers never led to anything. Their bad ideas are generally focused on a forced gameplay style, and also some KeSPA like arcane bullshit on things like wearing a sponsor's headset. Whereas Valve's good ideas make a game that's incredibly fun to watch, even when some elements get poo poo on by the community; like the divided opinion over whether the game should encourage comebacks or just let teams with bad starts have poor midgame because of it. Having a four day live event of tournament play is more fun rather than having a huge on-location LAN shindig for one championship BO5 and then calling it an event. Valve's bad ideas generally are just poor priorities, the entire company's flat structure and the problems that arise from it have been talked about in everything from poor communication even with players, to the total abandonment of TF2, and the barely-existent Steam support system. Valve seems to be laser-focused on running an economy built upon imposing artificial scarcity on virtually limitless goods through licenses to use said goods, as if the attorneys who write EULAs for games decided they should start making games. Which is a nice way to say that even if you're okay with hats in passing as a thing that exists, when you sit down and think deeply about hats and what they are, you should be furious. The fact that so much more effort is put into hats than anything else right now is saddening. Icefrog is doing a really good job balancing the game, though, and the hats bullshit doesn't affect him one iota, so in spite of all the bad optics Dota still remains a better game. Every time I get an in-game item in tf2/dota/csgo I always sell it on the marketplace. Over the years I've used those Steambucks to buy Arma 3 (full price), Company of Heroes 2 (steam sale), and Invisible Inc (full price) iirc. So on the one hand I think it's hilariously stupid how much everyone cares about this in-game item bullshit... but on the other hand I've had a lot more 김밥 money over the years because of their stupidity so idk I guess everybody wins good job valve.

Not that anything drops anymore since switching from single items to full sets justified reducing the drop rate.
