Yes? What do you think I'm misinterpreting? Eric Hobsbawm, notably full of poo poo and widely reviled by the left. http://banmarchive.org.uk/articles/1996%20annual%20lecture.htm open24hours fucked around with this message at 09:07 on Aug 25, 2016 |

Bring back the Cold War. I remember living in fear of nuclear weapons in high school. Myself, Krappy, and Lama tried to dig a bomb shelter in my backyard, but as we are at Latitude -34.36, Longitude 150.87, there is quite a bit of ancient loving Australian sandstone just beneath the surface of what passes for soil. Nukes are quite beautiful to watch going off as it were. And we have some really good high speed cameras now ... My point is that growing up in the Cold War made it so that any regional crisis was insignificant. We were only really worried about the USSR and the USA nuking the gently caress out of each other and the rest of the world. Kinda peaceful at the time I guess? Like a chess game where both sides are held in check.

Makes sense. If the LNP can distance themselves from the racism the right is typically associated with there's a goldmine of socially regressive voters in some of those migrant communities. I've never been too sure why anyone on the left thought large numbers of them would ever be allies in a left wing cause

Both are opposed by the right, both are supported by the left, but both can contradict each other. When political power gets involved everythings up in the air.

I do think some pro-conservative sentiment was stirred up after Rudd was removed since he was very popular amongst the Chinese community. Otherwise they are conservatives for the same reason lots of white people are conservatives (being rich or being fundamentalist Christians). gay picnic defence posted:Makes sense. You see right-wingers occasionally say east-Asians and south-Asians are The Good Ones, usually coupled with concern trolling about university entries. Other times they seem to think of them as LOTR elves - beautiful, intelligent, but Be Careful.

I'm not sure if there are hard numbers on which migrant populations vote where. Don't think the AEC has that information. There's a lot of articles running around recently about the SUCCESS of the Liberals targeting Chinese Communities. Probably just News LTD trying to create some weird THE CHINESE - TURNBULL'S NEW ALLIES puff pieces.

You can look at ethnicity breakdowns by catchment areas (a few blocks) and then cross reference that with booth results for a decent idea, would be a fun project when the new census data comes out

There's a bit of a divide between attitudes within Asian communities in Australia. okay realtalk though it's all about terminology, and really identity politics is a poo poo term to use because it devalues the push behind it, which in this case is "universal human equality". There's a longer and more precise spiel, but basically by saying that "the left" engages in "identity poltics", you are marginalising other factors/issues.

People on the left do engage in identity politics. Arguing that any criticism of that serves to marginalise other issues just doesn't hold up.
