That combat school vid needs Eye of the Tiger over it. Nice improvement, how much of it was from practice and how much from not having the plague anymore?

I didn't tell her anything! I was going to have her do the swordsman school, but she had already done it on her own. That said, the issue was (and still is :v:) that she needs to not die. The vast majority of our problems in Woodfall was that for every enemy that we killed, we lost anywhere between half to two full hearts along the way, which is why pretty much everything I did with her was "Okay, here is your shield. It makes you literally invincible to 90% of what the game will throw at you. These are your options for moving in combat. They also make you more or less invincible."

I honestly wonder if you might have an easier time with the controls if you mapped them to be more like dark souls. Sword with R1, Shield with L1, ect. Probably too late now.

Ignoring that she plays on a retrolink (which is literally just an N64 pad and the controller the game was actually designed for) I'm trying to imagine how that would work, honestly. Lock on on LT/L2, Shield on LB, Sword on RB (except for jump attack which is bound to the action button!), A for confirm, X/Y/B as your c-items, but you still have C-Up and all the first person stuff that wouldn't go anywhere cleanly. And even if you did sort that out, that's a lot of stuff getting mapped to the shoulder buttons when you're probably going to regularly need at least to have fingers on at least two, if not three of them at all times.

Fair point! I didn't know she was literally using a USB N64 controller. For some reason I thought she was using something closer to an X-Box controller. And shoehorning controls on a game that's definitely not made for them probably isn't the best.

Say whatever you want about the 3-armed crab people that the N64 controller was actually designed for, try playing Megaman Legends 2. It's a contemporary 3D dungeon crawler with Z-targeting and no matter what control layout you pick, that dualshock gets uncomfortable real loving quickly. It almost makes the Lovecraftian controller that Nintendo built make a little sense.

Does the N64 controller have a name? It's so many syllables

She did use a 360 controller up til like the Forest Temple in OoT, but then she got a retrolink and never looked back.

You must be a friend that's good at shredding!
Also, playing a lot of N64 games is awkward as gently caress with modern controllers, as there's next to no 6 face button controllers in production anymore. In most cases, you have to map it to a thumbstick, which isn't always the best thing. I found it to be a bit annoying on the N64 Zelda games.

Yeah, which is also what Nintendo does with virtual console N64 titles on the Wii or Wii U. And it doesn't work as well in a lot of cases as you'd hope. Like it makes playing the ocarina in OoT and MM very awkward, though perhaps not as awkward as the 3DS versions... in which the note's position on the staff has absolutely no relation to the face button's position for whatever reason.

It's nearly a one-on-one match to the positions on the N64 controller, but rotated 90 degrees.

What?

Okay, the order of notes from lowest to highest in the N64 versions is A, CV, C>, C<, C^. That is basically how the face buttons on the controller are physically laid out in terms of height, so it's intuitive and makes sense.

The order of notes from lowest to highest in the 3DS versions is L, R, Y, X, A... which doesn't follow the layout of the N64 buttons even if you rotate it clockwise or counterclockwise. You're pushing the buttons in order from highest to lowest to play the notes in order of lowest to highest, which is the most counterintuitive thing they could have done with it. It almost makes sense to me if for some reason you wanted to hold the 3DS up to your face and push the touchscreen buttons like you were playing a real instrument, but that's the only thing I can really think of where the layout seems reasonable.

Err, it's been a while since I played MM3D. Right, so, it's not like the face buttons, but the 90° rotation is still a thing.
If you turn your 3DS 90° counterclockwise you have L at the bottom, following that 'column' you get R. But then you run out of 3DS so you move one 'column' right and from bottom to top you have Y, X, A, which aligns with the note scale.

So if you wanted to get a continuous line, imagine the face buttons (sans B) floating beyond the R button.

Because the original 3DS' mic is poo poo and people would try to whistle directly into it, which would cause it to clip something fierce and it wouldn't be able to recognize notes at all.
Though it'd probably cause an interesting series of videos of weird songs and sounds being misinterpreted by the game.

But if Fae used up her bombs, she would be less versatile than she was now, and what if she really needed that versatility later? /redmage

But yeah, Bomb mask is for dungeoneering, bombs are for area denial in combat.

And IIRC, there are like 13 masks with an appreciable non get-a-heart-or-other-mask utility. So a little over half have a use. But of those... Bunny, Blast, and Fairy are the most overall useful.
