My county's school system enacted a new weather policy, which allows them to close schools without air conditioning when it's above 90 degrees. The heat and humidity combo can be oppressive. There are a lot of pissy adults on a local news facebook who are making fun of children because 'I didn't have AC growing up, kids these days!!!!!' and acting like children deserve to suffer in the heat because... they had to? The only downside to them closing the schools is that the kids are stuck with adults who think like this. Someone specifically mentioned that they work with special ed kids and one of them has seizures that can be triggered by excessive heat. And the school system is weird because they make classes start earlier and earlier, when it's still ridiculously hot. Kids are more susceptible to heat, as well. Look, I don't like kids, but I don't want them to be mistreated and I don't want them to suffer through preventable things. What the hell is wrong with adults who act like this? snoo has a new favorite as of 02:44 on Aug 29, 2016 |

You said it yourself: The Snoo posted:'I didn't have AC growing up, kids these days!!!!!' Mind you, these adults have conveniently forgotten the details of the days they spent in 100F+ classrooms, where they no doubt learned nothing and were a huge waste of everyone's time. It's like those people that rage against seat belts (and other safety features in cars), because they were fine, I never had a problem without them! Road toll figures of the time (if they could be found, and if they could be related to seat belt use, as data collection was so poor) suggest otherwise.

Hah, I was just thinking about the seat belt thing, too. I bet most of these people have jobs/cars with AC and don't have to worry about being stuck in overcrowded classrooms with poor ventilation, and maybe 1 box fan, if you're lucky. It's just so spiteful and sad.

Yeah heat can gently caress you up good, my school had no AC because people stole them all any time a new one was installed and teachers constantly wondered why kids would be miserable and never pay attention to the lessons while the only fan in the whole class was pointed at the teacher's desk. We also had one of those lovely gym teachers who's solution to any issue was to make kids run laps. Someone forgot their gym shorts? Run laps in your jeans in the hot tropical sun! Try to take a break to get some water because you're dehydrated as hell? gently caress you, run laps until you literally pass out. I wound up having to get a doctor's note to get excused from PE because of how sick the constant dehydration and over exertion in the sun was making me. The teacher was kind enough to call me a pussy and a girl while I was cleaning out my locker.

I decided to go barefoot outside once, when I was much younger. I got really awful blisters on the heels and balls of my feet, as well as 4 toes, and that's the last time I went outside without something on my feet.

Barefoot in the house is all well and good until Hurricane Season here in Florida and it's basically a minefield of scorpions hiding from the rain. (I like going barefoot in the house, sandals/flipflops outside)

I'm about as far from a soldier-worshiping "are troops" Republican as you can get, but that has to be satire. It just ticks all the boxes too perfectly. Nobody honestly believes that mean kids at school* are worse than being shot at and blown up. Plus mommy and daddy not paying attention to you because they're at work? Also I refuse to believe that emos are still a thing in 2016. They'd get absolutely ripped apart for trying to glamorize depression. * Bullying is not cool and I am not downplaying it at all, but come on.

You would be surprised at the poo poo people buy into regarding their subculture. See "Christians are the most persecuted group in the US" for a more broad example. For a local one, I work in a building where one of the employees believes that motorcycle enthusiasts are "the only group you can legally commit a hate crime(?) against or legally(?) victim blame."

No Birth Certificate? Good luck to your child in 16 years when they are trying to get a driver's license. Or a Passport. Or register to vote. Congratulations on your child not being "State Property" (whatever that means) but unless you are planning on living in a commune forever they are going to have to participate in society eventually. I'm sure your kid will be grateful you made a lot of future paperwork issues harder for them for your weirdo beliefs.
