Episode 36 was real bad. The crew just can't understand why Clinton would highlight anti-racist statements from previous republican presidents-- either it's a secret plan to water down progressives in the democratic party or she's just a terrible politician trying to play 12th dimensional chess. Here's a hint guys: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedge_issue And then a purported feminist claims that misogyny made Hillary Clinton's career, and those berniebros were just make believe. Jesus Christ, wipe off some of that salt before the next one.

They knew exactly why she was trying to wedge republicans on racism, they just cruticised the absurdity of it targeted at bush and coming from a Clinton, and discussed it as an attempt to push the democrats rightward by taking on 'moderate' republicans like Paul Ryan and Kissinger and keeping progressive votes captive. There's also way more to feminism than empty representation with no structural reform or policy, and there's lots of room for criticism of Hillary from that perspective.

Yeah but it seemed a little hard for them to get you can point out that even Paul Ryan thinks it is racist without saying Paul Ryan is a good guy

But then again, I've been spared the unironic "queen Hillary" comments they also decried so maybe I'm just lucky

courting Republicans voters by rhetorically separating establishment GOP members from Trump can be sound electoral strategy while also being morally questionable in the long-term because it gives them a pass on all the ways in which they contributed to the creation of Trumpism.

Though the bit about the Clinton project of establishing a dominant center-right party that can hold the left hostage was a bit conspiracy theory-ish, sure.

If they recognize it as a wedge issue, then they should realize wedge issues are about breaking the opposing party's coalition. Hillary is emphasizing the division between moderate republicans and Trump on race because she's trying to tear them apart. This isn't 12th dimensional chess, it's one move! They worry about downballot races; how are Democrats going to tie their opponents to trump if Hillary just gave them an out? Uh, if moderate republican candidate takes her offer and repudiates Trump, then Trump's loony toons supporters won't vote for moderate republican candidate and he'll lose. This isn't hard.

There is more to feminism than empty representation, and sure, criticise Hillary from that perspective all you want. I think you're wrong, but whatever. Don't say Breitbart tier poo poo like "misogyny made hillary's career" or claim the Berniebros weren't real.

Here's the thing. Trump's loony toons already hate the "moderate" Republicans and nothing Hillary says will change that. They're not suddenly going to start supporting Paul Ryan because Hillary says he's one of them. On the other hand, tying congressional Republicans to Trump could actually scare off the more mainstream Republican voters, leaving them with no one. Not only does that have some small chance of delivering Congress but it also doesn't require you to make common cause with a bunch of people whose primary distinction from Trump is that they're more coded about their awful views.

The reason most republican politicians haven't repudiated Trump's crazy poo poo is they can't risk offending his idiot supporters, whose votes they need to win in november. Paul Ryan got a lot of votes from Trump supporters in his primary. The minority who have repudiated Trump are from moderate districts and realize supporting Trump will cost them more moderate votes than they'd gain from Trump's crazy crew. Hillary's speech is an attempt to fire up moderate republicans-- your party has been stolen from you by crazy racists -- which would make the calculus for republicans supporting trump a lot harder. And the more Republican politicians who repudiate trump before the election, the more likely it is that Trump blames them for his loss, and takes a significant portion of the crazy racists with him on the way out the door. That's how the Republican party dies.

You're not engaging with her actual point, though, beyond that stripped of all context it sort of looks bad. It's simplified for rhetorical effect, sure, but Featherstone's argument was that the paranoid lunatics and cartoonish misogyny that Hillary faced made it very easy for her to look like a feminist paragon by comparison, and served as a smokescreen for her support of distinctly unfeminist ideas like welfare reform. It's why Clinton surrogates seem so baffled by actual leftist criticism now, and have to resort to nonsense like "Berniebros"--the vast majority of previous criticism of her has boiled down to right-wingers screaming about the fact that she's a woman and/or making the accusation that she personally murdered people.

The Democratic party has relied too heavily on pointing at the looniest Republicans available and saying "hey, at least we're not THOSE guys", and Hillary is a very good example of that.

The misogyny Hillary faced was not paranoid and cartoonish at the time. More people think it's paranoid and cartoonish today due in no small part to Hillary fighting for decades to beat it back. Suggesting she benefitted from misogyny, due to the opportunity it gave her to get famous by resisting it, erases that struggle. It's like suggesting slavery made Frederick Douglass' career.

It could be that significant majorities of people of color, women, and other oppressed groups have voted Democrat because the party of Paul Ryan, Bob Dole, and Donald trump has always been transparently racist.

This is such an exaggeration of what was said though. The point was that the glass ceiling exists in large part because society normally gets away with a lot of misogyny, but the GOP has overplayed their hand with Clinton to such an extent that it became impossible for society to ignore the sexism it normally does. This doesn't minimize her or any other woman's struggle or take credit away from her, it's just pointing out that people being super obvious about their animus to the point where they forget to code it often supports the argument that said animus exists in the first place.

I mean, would you take issue with saying that images of white southerners beating on peaceful black protesters helped advance the cause of the civil rights movement by forcing the broader public to confront the virulent racism it had previously been content to overlook? Would you be upset with someone saying that footage of police shootings has helped Black Lives Matter gain support and legitimacy?

There's a reason Clinton's campaign has made a point of having her and her female surrogates continually bait Donald Trump. It's because they know that it helps her when he says outrageously sexist poo poo. I don't see what's controversial about this.
