One of the few actual policy papers released by the Trump campaign tried to explain how Mexico would pay for the wall. It involved garnishing money transfers like WU and imposing tariffs on Mexican imports. It was dumb but at least workable if you have sufficient levels of imagination. They don't have a policy paper on their tax plan, by the way. Making every post office a Mexican embassy is wrong on so many levels I can't give all those ways it's wrong justice in just one post.

Most of the right wing knows our agricultural sector would, if not collapse, then at least take a massive downturn if we actually prosecuted everyone who hired illegal immigrants. Even most legal Hispanic immigrants and natives won't take those jobs, and certainly no white people, and these companies sure as hell aren't going to improve conditions and pay and working hours and all that to the point of making the jobs attractive to people who have some choice. In many cases it's slavery in all but name, and it's happening right under our noses.

Illegal immigrants are the new slave class in the US and, despite how much they love to use them as boogeymen, higher up conservatives know it. The real reason they oppose any attempt at immigration reform, besides the ever-useful bigotry, is that them becoming citizens removes their ability to hold deportation over their heads to keep them in horrible jobs that nobody else would ever do. So the Republicans were carefully trying to keep their base against them, but ensure that they didn't have to actually do anything about the situation until Trump came in and, as with most things, took their positions to their logical, horrible endpoint with his rhetoric.

Yeah the people in power know that Illegal Immigration isn't the problem they are characterizing it as but the base totally has bought into the lie. This is much like every other scam regarding the Republican platform and the chickens are starting to come home to roost first in the form of the Tea Party and now in Trump running wild.
