Ciri is pretty much the only exception to this.

She's pretty decent on the mage scale from Visenna to Vilgefortz.

That scene with the money bag in season of storms is genuinely one of the most funny things that I've read in a long time, but husssshhh, no spoilers.

Also worth mentioning is that Yen is far far older than she appears. After wandering about seeing what happens in the Witcher world, I think you get pretty tired and cynical of the poo poo going on.

She's ~100 or so. About the same age as Geralt. Geralt's jaded, but not in the HEY gently caress IT way. Yennefer's entirely gotten to a point where people are just marginally useful tools.

I know we're getting into BOOK TERRITORY, but consider what Yennefer is introduced doing and why she's doing it. That's only a few years before TW3.

Is Triss aware that Yennefer/Geralt's love is entirely the product of magical genie shenanigans?. It might explain but perhaps not excuse some of her actions in the first two games.

Yen was abused as a child and tried to kill herself. She also was tortured nearly to death by Vilgefortz because of her love for Ciri and Geralt. She is a tough woman who dont take poo poo from anyone, rejected the lodge of sorceress and all she wants to do is retire with Geralt while he makes bagpipes or something like that. She also has shown affection to Dandelion and Zoltan and even forgave Triss for date raping Geralt. I wish CDPR touched more on the backstory of Yen and her relationship with Ciri, thats my only grip on my favorite game ever. So yes, maybe she is a little bitchy sometimes but also she is a fierce woman.

One of my favorite scenes with Yen is when After necromancing Skjall, and killing the tree, the priestesses freak out. Regardless of the choice that you make as Geralt, she immediately steps forward and says "He had nothing to do with this, he tried to stop me, he failed." Whatever she does, even if he's complicit, she doesn't want Geralt catching any flak over it.

Also in the books When Vilgefortz was searching for Ciri mind reading Yen she directs him to Geralt, that was her main memory at the time

Also worth remembering that many mages were born a deformed or defective to a point of being effectively worthless as noble sons or daughters, and treated as such growing up before being traded to a mage for a favor or just to get rid of them quietly. Only after they get to a point of being magically adept are they fixed and made beautiful.

You have a whole profession of people who are beautiful and powerful but came from backgrounds that are just rife with abuse, social isolation, and degradation from their families. Throw onto that mages' apprenticeships promoting a dehumanization of non-mages and you get a group that is pretty hosed up.

Yup. She makes a ton of coy references to it in Witcher 1. At the very beginning of Chapter III, Triss tells Geralt that "the last time (she) felt this way, (Geralt) and a sorceress were playing with a genie".

Also Shani wouldn't work because she'd get old and die way before Geralt. There's a reason he's sticking to sorceresses - similar life expectancy.

On the other hand she had nothing to loose doing that, and if Geralt got caught in the fallout too it could make their mutual goal more difficult to accomplish.

I liked Keira. She's head strong, sarcastic and doesn't take Geralts nonsense in regard to Yen.

I'd like to think I did her, but she totally did me to get her own way.

More great social commentary on the roles forced on Eastern European women imo, especially in the more traditional society where the only path to power was through men. Women who have come up from nothing to positions of power on personal charisma and intelligence often waded through some poo poo. Doesn't help that concubines are pretty much trafficked women and princesses don't always have it much better.

Nothing, and that's the problem. Levels mostly serve to gate your progress, you need to be within the level range of the monsters you're fighting or it gets super hard.

When you start NG+ you're already decked out with all the ability points you really need and good gear etc. But, your progress is still level-gated, and levels are meaningless, which makes the world feel much less open.

I'd much prefer a character progression system where you got ability points and cool loot from quests, but levels didn't exist at all. If CDPR wants to gate progress, do it with quest objectives rather than the very tacked-on XP/level system in W3. For example, I can't progress beyond Velen until I beat the boss which requires me to do a favor for Keira to get a rare ingredient for blade oil. I can't progress beyond Novigrad until I do some favors for the crime bosses because they control all ships coming through the port and they're well aware Geralt is in town, he's not exactly a subtle character.
