loving native privilege, I tell ya :jerkbag:

Pedantry, but it was 1996 (Gordon's). Gordon's being the residential school headed by noted pedophile Peniston (seriously) Starr, who served as head master for decades, if I can speak with a certain degree of tact. He, of course, being the namesake for the pejorative "Starr Babies" which, again, doesn't need really to be explained. I have met people my age who attended this very school! Gordon's is just an hour or so north of Regina. I went there for a powwow once. They raffled off an '89 Cutlass, which is a pretty solid sense of humour all things considered.

Anyway, I digress. CI is of course completely right, anything that happened in the past is totally meaningless, and is hermetically sealed off from any possible relevance to the present. When I walk to the store, it isn't a progression of a thousand steps, I just instantly teleport through space and time between positions.

Say Watt?

quote:

When signing the Japanese copy, Col. Cosgrave – perhaps owing to blindness in one eye – placed his scrawl below the line reserved for the Canadian signature and instead signed on the line of the French representative. In the official timeline of the ceremony, a brief but noticeable delay appears after Col. Cosgrave’s signing – the French delegate no doubt perplexed as to where to place his signature.

Each subsequent delegate eventually signed on the next available – if incorrect – line; the final delegate from New Zealand simply signing his name in a blank space underneath the others, his signature line having been commandeered by the Dutch.

When the Japanese delegation protested – could they accept a botched surrender document? – Douglas MacArthur’s famously brusque chief of staff General Richard Sutherland scratched out the now-incorrect list of Allied delegates and handwrote the correct titles under each signature, adding his initials to each correction to forestall further protest. The Japanese were then dismissed from the USS Missouri with a short “Now it’s all fine” from Gen. Sutherland.

It was a quirky end to an otherwise dark chapter of human history. Canada’s contribution to the historical blooper reel can be seen by the public at Japan’s Edo-Tokyo Museum, where the surrender document remains on display. The Allied copy of the document, it should be noted, was signed without incident.

China is going to extend the deadline for their Canola rules, wonder what the PM had to give up for that

http://www.producer.com/2016/08/china-delays-new-canola-rules-in-late-reprieve-for-canada/

quote:

BEIJING, Aug 31 (Reuters) – China agreed on Wednesday to delay introducing stricter rules on shipments of canola from Canada while both countries work to end a months-long trade spat over sales of the oilseed, offering an eleventh hour temporary reprieve for Canada’s farmers.

Just a day before the new standards were due to go into force, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said Canada would be able to continue with the current canola export regime, while a longer-term solution was worked out.

China is Canada’s top export market for the oilseed, and Ottawa has taken an increasingly strong line in talks on a new standard, which industry participants say would significantly raise costs for exporters.

While only temporary, the exemption for Canada will be seen as a small victory for Trudeau. The import dispute has taken centre stage during his visit to China.

China has said the tougher import rules were necessary to prevent the spread of blackleg disease from Canadian canola into Chinese crops of rapeseed, another name for the agricultural commodity.

“China itself is a large producer of canola, but China has no intention of keeping its doors closed to other exporters,” Li told a joint news conference with Trudeau at his side.

“But it’s also true that Chinese canola producers have their own worries, hoping that imported canola will not carry with it any disease. Chinese consumers also have that issue on their mind,” Li added.

Both sides should take a flexible attitude on the canola issue, he said.

Industry participants say the new standard, under which China will reduce the amount of foreign matter allowed per shipment to no more than 1 percent from 2.5 percent, would significantly raise costs for exporters.

Negotiating teams from the two countries were currently meeting in Beijing, Canada’s Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland said.

“We are now working on achieving a long-term agreement on terms of Canadian canola shipments and, as the prime minister said, we are working to achieve that in the coming days and weeks,” she told reporters.

China has also been keen to start talks on a free trade agreement with Canada, similar to the pacts Beijing has sealed with Australia and New Zealand, although a senior Canadian government official said last week there is no near-term chance of agreement.

Li said both countries had agreed to start feasibility talks on a free trade pact at an early date, although Trudeau made no mention of this in remarks in front of reporters.

Just as a point of comparison, recommended maximum IV dosage for fentanyl is 200 micrograms/hr, while the lowest-dose transdermal patch contains 2 milligrams, consumed via "cutting a small bit off and smoking it". Or I guess to put it in PT6A terms, the equivalent of enjoying a cigar in a leisurely fashion over an afternoon versus somehow spontaneously huffing an entire Churchill.

PT6A

I'm not saying opiate addiction isn't a major issue, just that I find it extremely unlikely that anyone can become addicted after a single dose, which someone else claimed, just like you couldn't become an alcoholic after a single glass of wine. It's an addiction like any other, not some kind of special bogeyman that will instantly ruin your life.

Given my fondness for addictive substances in general, I was actually legitimately concerned about the addictive potential of oxy or fentanyl used medically, both because of what people in this thread have said, what people in the media are saying "so and so got addicted to heroin after surgery!" and because my cousin died of opiate overdose. Gladly, I'm pretty sure that's horseshit, because I don't ever want to take opiates again. Compare that with my first beer or cigar, after which I knew I loved drinking and smoking. If I don't have an addictive personality, I don't know who does.

Edit: and I said nothing about overdose risk, just addictive potential. Street drugs obviously are much more dangerous to the users, which is why we should allow for a clean properly-dosed supply to anyone who wants it.
